Anyone else thing they should remove "under god" from the Pledge of Allegiance? I mean, it wasn't added in until the 1950's during the McCarthy era, so why should it be there now? Especially when the country was founded on the fact that religion isn't a required part of American life.

But other people say it! And when other people say things that you don't agree with, that just isn't right! Like, it's in the Constitution! Look it up!

And, for good measure... lawl.

During the Eisenhower era, actually, and I believe that it is unconstitutional, ergo it should be removed.

On a completely serious note someone yelled that I hated America when I didn't stand for it. I said, "Well, maybe you should stop being a fascist and allow me to exercise my First Amendment right to not stand."

He got red in the face and sat back down. Internal lulz ensued.

Yeah, start a chain reaction. Remove the word "god" from every document in America. Great idea. Just don't say it and let us who do believe in god say it. If you can't tell by the icon, I am a very patriotic person.

Well played, sir.

Personally, I don't have an issue with an individual not standing and doing the pledge, so long as they are respectfully quiet while others are doing the pledge. It's your right not to pledge allegiance. For example, for some reason, the state legislature declared that every morning at Texas public schools, the US Pledge of Allegiance would be said, along with the Texas Pledge of Allegiance, followed by a "moment of silence".

As I personally don't understand the concept of pledging my allegiance to my nation and then immediatly pledging said allegiance to a state, I don't say the Texas pledge.

I think it should be removed, but it should be something people chose to say - it should not be printed in default.

ALSO THIS IS A SIDE NOTE: The concept of "God" should be completely removed from government. When I go to court, I don't trust in God. I trust that in the court, from the many lies, from the many details, from the many evidences and testimonies, comes one truth.

E pluribus unum.

Well, it is your right as an American to not have to stand or pledge for America, thanks to the freedoms America gives us :P

Though... people do see it as disrespectful to not at least just stand.

That is not true: any act by the government that does not have the purpose of advancing or inhibiting a religion, has a secular legislative purpose, and does not result in an excessive entanglement with government and religion is constitutionally acceptable.

I believe that you have the right to not say the pledge if you wish to. Just stay silent and have respect, but you are definitely not "un-American" just because you don't say the pledge. I choose to pledge my allegiance.

I respect the flag and not the pledge of allegiance, and I will not sacrifice my loyalty to the constitution for the brief recognition of respect for the nation's history that I can express in a myriad of different ways.

It just all depends on your view of constitutional, remember the constitution was created several hundreds of years ago when there were no such thing as nuclear weapons, biological weapons, terrorist sleeper cells, massive economy, wide spread drug smuggling/dealing, etc. Everything must evolve to survive, and so must the constitution.

What religion does the Pledge of Allegiance advance or hinder? I've talked to many athesist that say that atheism is not a religion but rather a form of thought.
