Social media is pretty bad but those dumb enough to let themselves to be controlled by it are the real issue.
To be fair it's not always about smart or dumb. I believe the mass killing in Myanmar a few years ago were because they don't have traditional internet, but instead just have cellular phone coverage.
Studies showed that instead of logging on to various news sites, these people--many of whom had never seen a phone or computer before--instead went to the default program, which just so happened to be Facebook.
Apparently Facebook is region-specific as well, so basically you had an entire country (especially in the rural areas) getting all their information from Facebook because they don't know what the internet is and thought Facebook was the entire internet. So when someone spouts misinformation like "The intellectuals from the city are going to kill you unless you kill them", well, you are more likely to believe it.
I'll try to find the article I read that did a deep dive on this, it was really fascinating. The point is: I think you have a lot of "boomers" and older that didn't grow up in the internet age and their main source of information is Facebook and maybe Twitter. I'm not making excuses for them, but at the same time, it explains why they are the way they are.
This also goes for younger folks except it seems like it's more about Youtube and "influencers" (gen-x, millenials specifically).
