[QUOTE="LJS9502_basic"]The problem with that list is it's 100 greatest and while some of those artists were influenced in their time...they stopped being an influence...and a list that narrow should certainly focus more on those bands that stood the test of time rather then disappearing. I can see including some of them on a list of specific decades though.LJS9502_basic

But what artist is constantly influential? It seems to me that even the artists that are the absolute biggest influences in their genres have a certain point where they stop being influential.

When you make the list of 100 greatest the artists should be relevant to that. And not put on a list to fill it up. IMO. And there was filler on there.

Again, what artist is constantly influential? The only one I can think of is The Beatles and that's because they quit while they were on top. Even heavy hitters like The Stones are not influential anymore. Their influence was in 60s and part of the 70s.

Horrible list. Fleetwood Mac aren't even on it? And the Eagles, Neil Young, Elton Joh, Pink Floyd, CCR and Michael Jackson are way, WAY too low...to the point of making the list a joke. There were "groups" on there that clearly were just put into the list to make the magazine and article appeal to a broader and younger audience.

Pirate700

Hey, man, come on, I've had a rough night and I hate the ****ing Eagles!

Anyways, Fleetwood Mac isn't that great, never done anything really defining. Then again never have a lot of those bands on the list, but appealing to broad audiences is what RS does.

To say Fleetwood Mac didn't do anything defining is just flat out wrong. They had classic hit after hit. And to this day they are still super popular. That's exactly what a top artist is.

yeah, I think to have a real list they need to wait 20 years and make one . They should make a list that is: best artists up til 1980. By now, we know waht artists have stood the test of time, and that is mostly all that matters.

They quit because John Lennon left to be with Yoko. I was definitely NOT a business decision.

I don't think it was Yoko. It think it was all ready existing tensions that Yoko maybe inflamed.

I'm not saying they quit while they were on top on purpose. I'm only saying that they were still making some of their best stuff when they broke up.

The Beatles broke up for reasons other than business. There was Yoko being pushed at the band all the time....and egos were clashing. But it was not a business decision.

[QUOTE="LJS9502_basic"][QUOTE="majoras_wrath"]The Sex Pistols (with a few other bands such as Iggy and the Stooges) invented one of the biggest umbrella genres in rock music, regardless of their one album status.Same goes for Buddy Holly. He was recording for what, 4 years, before he died? Yet he is a founding father of rock as we know it.GreySeal9

I still don't see them as one of the 100 greatest artists. Too many better artists got bumped. Then again...I wouldn't put Madonna there either.

"Better" is totally subjective.

And in the pop genre, there are few artists with more clout than Madonna regardless of one thinks of her music. Had tons of classics, tons of imitators, revolutionized the pop stage show, was one of the first female artists to have full control of her brand and musical direction, and has some sonic diversity than nearly any other pop star besides Prince.

It actually seems ridiculous to include pop and not have Madonna on the list. She simply has too much clout in the genre.

Pop is fluff. And her music wasn't innovative. She sold an image. Which is fine...but then the list is about artists.

I didn't say it was a business decision.

When I say they broke up while they were on top, I mean that they were still putting out some of their best material and were still extremely popular. I didn't say they broke up because they were on top.

Nowhere did I say anything about business.

Eminem & Beastie Boys over 2Pac....

Beach Boys over the Temptations, Led Zeppelin, and Stevie Wonder? F*** outta here...

MJ is too low

Bob Dylan number 2?

Janis Joplin = Most overrated artist ever

This list is pretty garbage imo...

That is merely your opinion and in no way is RS required to share it.

The music doesn't have to be "innovative". Do you think Elvis was innovative? But some of Madonna's later music is actually more avant-garde than pop music usually is, tho not innovative.

Image helped, but in no way can you demonstrate that the only reason she sold was image.

Also, Madonna is an artist even if you think pop is fluff.

She has lip-synched before, and there is part where she's dancing and some background vocals will be playing, but her vocals are live for the most part.

Still, her Blonde Ambition Tour pretty much changed the way live shows were approached in the pop genre. Her shows are almost theatrical and you can see that in other people's shows these days.

The thing is, if you leave Madonna off the list, you pretty much have to leave pop music off the list period (or the list simply doesn't make sense), which they're simply not going to do.

I can agree with that. If I had to make this list, I'd probably have her on there.

I don't know about that one. I think if you made a list of the best live performers (hardly any rock bands put on a show like them), they would be an obvious choice and would be pretty high up there, but I wouldn't put them on a GOAT list.

Yeah I guess I'm kind of iffy on them too. They were and still are almost bigger than music though. That's the main reason I'd have them on there. That and their very heavy influence on metal and rock in general. And what other band has their own army?

I can understand why you want to put them on there. And, even tho I'm not a big fan of their recordings, to have that kind of charisma on stage makes you special.

Yet another uneven list, many of the 'artists' they listed werent exactly the greatest musicians but known more for being performers.

It's not a horrible list, but I feel like it's a little dated. Don't get me wrong, with a few exceptions (Madonna), these are really talented influential artists, but they really gloss over the last twenty years of music. The 90's and 00's are barely represented and they've had artists just as good if not better than a lot of the people on this list. Also, I'd like to see Radiohead in the top 5, but that's just my personal tastes (if I were making the list, they'd be in my top 1 lol).

Not a huge fan of the list, but I can understand the influence of practically anybody on that list.. Also, kudos for including Talking Heads on the list (even if its at the 100 spot).

The last 20 years aren't represented because it was horrible compared to decades prior. Some more artists from then may emerge as time goes on.

Put it this way, the 80s were full of hair metal and new wave bands that all sounded the same.. Its hard coming up with anybody that stood out in the 80s minus a few exceptions.

While I love 80s music, the decade didn't have much representation either. the 60s and 70's was just an amazing time for music. An amount of quality that will likely never be seen again. The two decades have the representation to show for it.

But it's not a greatest musicians list, it's an greatest artists list. Artists don't need to be musicians.

There was more to the 80s than hair metal and new wave.

True, but that was basically huge for the most part... Again, there were exceptions..

I'm a Madonna fan, so I'm naturally gonna defend her, but you don't get into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame being untalented and not influential.

I mean, I can see why you might think she's not talented (tho I'd disagree), but not influential? In pop, there's hardly anybody more influential.

It seems to me that it got alot bigger since I last saw it. Did it only go to 50 last time? Anyway, this 100 artist list seems alot more comprehensive.

http://www.rollingstone.com/music/lists/100-greatest-artists-of-all-time-19691231/the-beatles-19691231

People will whine about this list since people they don't like are on there, or their favorite artists are not here, or they actually put pop artists on there! (the list simply wouldn't be complete without a few pop stars), but it's pretty damn comprehensive, and the pictures are gorgeous. They perfectly capture the personalities/auras of the artists.

Crap list imo

[QUOTE="deathtarget04"]

Hell yeah Bob Dylan #2.

Zepp at 14? Floyd at 51!?!?

Nirvana is 30 wow.

And I don't see Supertramp or Genesis.

Do they hate prog or something??

theone86

Genesis? Really?

Yes Genesis. If Cream and The band are on there, why can't Genesis? Lynyrd Skynyrd? Guns N Roses? James Taylor? The Drifters? AC/DC? Lots of questionable choices that could have been subbed for better acts
