Interesting that you'd say that. See, no one is forcing you to use one. The intention would be for them to be used by people who have difficulty forming a fulfilling relationship, oftentimes for reasons that are beyond their control, or for personal lifestyIe choices that make an otherwise attractive partner unattractive. Why deny them the opportunity? If these robots end up being as effective as the guy thinks they'll be, then they would really help a lot of people find fulfillment that they'd never find with another person.
That said, I think that his predictions are incredibly optimistic. That sort of AI would have to be incredibly sophisticated to pass for a human, and if it couldn't pass for a human, I doubt any sense of fulfillment be genuine. Maybe eventually. But in less than 50 years? I find that hard to believe.
At least at the beginning, I'm guessing that all the reactions and stuff will be programmed. So really none of the feelings are really there, just physical reactions. I don't think in 2050 we'll have discovered how to create something that actually feels.And maybe that's not possible (I'd think it's not), but if programming gets super advanced, you wouldn't be able to tell the difference, and then who are you to decide that it's not right that the feelings aren't really there...
Kinda scary, but I will remain open minded.
