Over at chow.com, there is a article asking this question. I personanly belive that a theate should allow it. Do to they only offering overpriced, stale, and unhealthy foods. What does everyone else think?

No. The theatre is not a restaurant nor a picnic park. If anything, they should stop selling food.

The only profit movie places make (I hear) is with the concessions. I think people should contribute to their movie place if they wanna keep watching movies. :x I'll still resent the prices.

Just as with most things in life, these things sort themselves out: -charge too much (or not enough selection) and patrons will resort to their own means of getting what they want for a price they are willing to pay -this is actually a very simple economics price curve -hopefully the theaters have done the appropriate research to hit that perfect price point to maximize profit...where enough people still buy at the high prices to maximize the money they make (vs charging more with more people sneaking stuff in or charging less with less people sneaking stuff in but with less profit) -me thinks their bread and butter is popcorn and drinks anyways though

Umm... i disagree, but whatever.

as a movie-goer (when i can be assed going to said movie) im of course going to say "yes! i liek bringing in outside food"

but of course if they did it would be Minus profit for them... and possiblly Minus movie cinema for me.

Majority of the people tend to bring their own food either way, and plus the theatre food is severely overpriced.

No. If you're a health conscience person, I would think you can go without eating for 2 hours; eat before or after. As for the cheap, stay at home, rent a movie, microwave some popcorn, and crack a generic store brand soda.

If I want to bring my own food, I will, there's nothing stopping me. However just for safety's sake I do not just in case there is a person who is allergic to something.

No.

Becasue ticket prices would then be $20 instead of $10.

It's how most theaters make any money at all, so I'm in favor of them doing what they're doing.

No sooner than you'd be able to walk into a baseball or football game with your own food and drink. I don't know why people always consider movie theaters to be the exception, but it wouldn't be acceptable to bring in your own food anywhere else. Would you walk into a restaurant with a lunchbox?

Honestly it's not the prices that get me it's the quality. I would never put any of that garbage into my body and they don't have any healthy alternatives so I just bring some nuts in my pants.

Coming from someone that actually worked at a theater, I would say no. Most of the money the theater makes is from concession.

No. Unless you are up for spending $20-30 dollars or more to watch a movie. And then there is the mess that will occur with sloppy food that people bring in. It's easy to clean up popcorn....not so much a sloppy joe.

I go w/ the out of sight out of mind philosophy on this. What the movie theater doesn't know doesn't hurt them. I've been to a few theaters w/ decently priced food, and I'll support that, but for the most part I just don't eat, and rarely I happen to have something w/ me already.

The entire idea of eating popcorn at the theater is from the depression, due to the fact that it was cheap. Why does it have to be $7 now? I don't care if it's the only place they can make profit - any company that needs a 4000% markup on one of their main items is doing something wrong. Not to mention that the counter is always staffed with the most unmotivated people in the world, where it takes 15 minutes to get food when there are only 3 people in line.

if the theater allows people to do that, then sure. but if they don't allow it, then no, if people want something to eat there, they should have to buy it from the concession stand. i used to work at a movie theater, and one of my managers told me the theaters make hardly any money from ticket sales, it's mostly from people buying stuff from the concession stand. if everyone brought their own food, the theaters wouldn't make any money.

I don't want to hear people eating nachos or anything like that.

Just continue to sneak in small food like we've been doing for years. I still sneak in soda and candy. I am not paying for that overpriced crap they have.

I don't think that trues. IF it was there would be very few people standing in line to order something at the movies.. Which isn't what happens.

Yes but then they would start raising ticket prices due to a fall in concession sales. And I am NOT paying $15 for a movie.

It should be allowed. You pay a ridiculous amount of money to get in, you shouldn't have to buy their overpriced food, as well. You also shouldn't have to sit through 20 minutes of preveiws and commercials. You pay around 9 or 10 bucks a head to see the movie, and putting you through the preveiws is wrong.

I remember before they even had commercials before the previews. It was nice (as I like previews, generally). I remember the first commercial I saw in a theater (it was a Coke commercial). I remember thinking, "Dear god. The floodgates have been opened."

I don't go all-out for cinema concessions, though I do normally get popcorn. If it's the winter months with bigger coats, I usually buy a large Coke elsewhere and sneak it in under my arm or in a pocket or something.

Well, this is kind of a mixed bag. On one hand you have more expensive tickets, if you reduce the profits from snacks. On the other hand, I really like to not to have to pay $6 for a soda. Depending on the movie, sometimes I don't want a drink/popcorn, some times I do. So depending on what mood I'm in at the movie theater usually is my temporary frame of mind :P

EDIT: It's easy to sneak snacks/soda into a theater this time of year...

It would be more than $1 definitely. Probably at least $10 if not more.

No. Concessions are one of the biggest (if not the biggest) money-makers for a theater, so getting rid of them would surely increase ticket prices.

I usually just sneak in a soda, and I sometimes buy popcorn. I'm happy with how things are now. Since I don't buy food I don't care about the prices: Food prices high and ticket prices low.
