Shouldnt school be optional? I dont think high school should be mandatory to go to. People who dont see going to college in their future shouldnt have to go through high school.

There would be more money and resources to spend on the people who do stay. I think people who dont go to college dont need to learn past what you can learn in 4th or 5th grade.

I guess in a way high school isnt mandatory since you can homeschool.

1. Kids are too young to make the decision regarding such an important matter. 2. People are dumb enough with school; imagine without 3. You still have to learn in homeschool.

No, I think it should be mandatory. Some people who manage to graduate high school are still pretty stupid in general (not insulting them, it's more lack of common sense than anything), so I'd hate to see more people who lack general education. I don't think college is all it's hyped up to be, on the other hand.

kids are not sure of their future... you could be 12 years old (the usual age somebody enters highschool) and think "i'll never go to college, that sucks lol!" and by the time you are 17 you'll be like "wow I cant wait till I get to college to become a professional and have a job and get paid for it" its the same reason why you have to take all the basic subjects even if you say "but what if I dont want to study something with those subjects?" your decision could change over the years...after all teenagers are actually characterized by having very unstable likes and dislikes. so yes, it should stay mandatory...

You dont have to learn in homeschool. Homeschool just means your parents are in full responsibility of your education.

I think it should remain compulsory. Otherwise we'd get too many people with no qualifications or education whatsoever. That's an unacceptable situation for anyone to be in

homeschool means you are getting educated at home. and you cant just enter college by saying "lol I didnt went to highschool! I was homeschooled!" you have to make tests and all even in homeschool...to be registed as an actual student in the government. you think that homeschool people dont get educated?

No kids are fickle. A middle schooler shouldn't be able to make a decision with such large consequences.

Pretty much. Even with the system that most nations have now, people don't give a damn about their education and essentially cheat their way through basic courses whilst neglecting any practical implications they could have. Imagine if a good 30% of the general populace couldn't do basic arithmetic. I don't mean are bad at it, but seriously cannot do it. It'd just be a colossal mess.

I think it should be a more focused route, while still teaching the basics.

Lets say you want to become....a mechanic, theres no reason you should need to take arts, or history, or cooking unless you want to.

At the same rate if someone wants to become a chef, why are we teaching him biology and physics?

Schools need to teach students what they need to know so they can learn what they need to learn rather than just going "Learn all this pointless stuff, and a few classes that are actually relevent to getting you on the path to your career goal."

I've done homeschool, and the only difference between it and regular highschool is that you can sit in your pajamas and watch movies while you do your school work. You still have to work, you still have to take exams. In some ways it's more difficult than normal school, because you have no teacher to help you and you can't get answers from anybody else. Doing things you don't want to do and know you won't use is frustrating, but it's pretty stupid to say anything past 4th or 5th grade shouldn't be required.

and for anyone who thinks "they should just teach you stuff related to what you want to study" what about the people who havent decided? receiving more subjects at school makes you more likely to know which career you want...if I wouldnt have received physics at high school, how would I know that I love physics and that im great at it?

You're one person, one example. If a person can say "I enjoy doing X, and can make good money doing X, and when i grow up i want to continue to do X and get paid for it" WHY are they required to learn the things that are totally irrelevant to getting to their goal? Personally i gave up on public schools when my teacher threw me out of a class when He told me the Square he had drawn on the whiteboard was actually a rectangle and that i was wrong to call it a square. I simply replied with "Exams ask for the best answer, and that's a square" i was thrown out for the rest of the class. Worst math teacher ever.

how many are "Lots"? 20 people? guess what: most of the people are not like that, there are over 6k billion people in the world, you think everyone are going to be like that? if you look at ANY poll you will see that most people who said they wanted to study something at certain age ended up studying something completly different. and its even a recognized fact: teenagers have many tastes, because they are in an experiencing stage of their life, they need to try everything to see if it fits to them, so one day you can say you like something and next day you can hate it...what you say is completly inmature and illogical, kids are not ready to make vocational choices at ages 12 or 7 and like I said, the reason why you learn stuff that are irrelevant is because that stuff can make you want to change your decisition or help you with a second option...for example I could want to be a lawyer, but in case you dont know lawyer is an extremely saturated profession and chances are that you will have a hell of a hard time to find a job as a lawyer...with a second choice you can decide to study something with a high demand, for example engineering or biotecnician

This is funny "There are over 6k Billion people in the world."

6,000 billion = 6 trillion. I'm Guessing you're not done math or social sciences yet? There's definatly not 6 Trillion people in the world.

I'm not going to discuss anything with someone whos pulling numbers and facts out of no-where.

Worst math teacher ever.Nibroc420

how many are "Lots"? 20 people? guess what: most of the people are not like that, there are over 6k billion people in the world, you think everyone are going to be like that? if you look at ANY poll you will see that most people who said they wanted to study something at certain age ended up studying something completly different. and its even a recognized fact: teenagers have many tastes, because they are in an experiencing stage of their life, they need to try everything to see if it fits to them, so one day you can say you like something and next day you can hate it...what you say is completly inmature and illogical, kids are not ready to make vocational choices at ages 12 or 7 and like I said, the reason why you learn stuff that are irrelevant is because that stuff can make you want to change your decisition or help you with a second option...for example I could want to be a lawyer, but in case you dont know lawyer is an extremely saturated profession and chances are that you will have a hell of a hard time to find a job as a lawyer...with a second choice you can decide to study something with a high demand, for example engineering or biotecnician

This is funny "There are over 6k Billion people in the world."

6,000 billion = 6 trillion. I'm Guessing you're not done math or social sciences yet? There's definatly not 6 Trillion people in the world.

I'm not going to discuss anything with someone whos pulling numbers and facts out of no-where.

excuse me, english is not my main language, spanish is, in spanish we dont use the word "billions" we just use "millions", 6k millions of people. and I love how you completly avoid everything I said by saying something like I take fact and numbers out of nowhere...ignore my grammar mistakes and try to debate my points ok? because what you are doing is just the equivalent of saying "ok you pwned me I dont know how to answer so im just going to attack something else and completly evade everything else you said"

Yes, it should be.

EDIT: Massive typo. It most certainly shouldn't be. Read that as mandatory. School most certainly should not be optional.

I'm not going to debate someone who wildly throws numbers around and makes untrue statements. Intelligent discussions require valid points on both sides, you've shown the inability to provide accurate numbers, and claim untrue things as fact. As such there's no sense in having a discussion with you.

I agree with "a discussion requires intelligence from both parts" so right now, im not discussing, im pwning you and you just proved that by completly ignoring what I said above and reposting the same thing you said  keep in your way good sir, and good luck when you turn 18 years old and realize that the career you wanted to study is really not that good and that you should have had more options. seriously, people pretending to be einstein around the internet just fail so hard

No, because taxpayers will likely have to subsidize your poor decision.
