It's time to finally find out who the better is. My vote: They are equal. I honestly cannot choose between the two.

I still hold the position that Reign in Blood is the greatest metal album of all time.

Reign in Blood is what brought Slayer to their near god-like status I will agree but Death has some equally amazing albums as well. Examples: Symbolic and Individual Thought Patterns.

Anytime. Especially Crystal Mountain. The drumming and low guitar riffs are what instantly got me hooked.

There's seriously a band called Death? I hope their music isn't as "creative" as their name...

Thanks, I'll definitely check them out. I don't listen to much metal besides: Boris, Sunn O))), Isis, Alcest, Neurosis, and Mastodon.

Death is like being impaled by a northern moonforest. Slayer is like being given an enema via rusty, AIDS-infected needle. I won't choose, and you can't make me.

I'd also recommend The Sound of Perseverance. I'm not surprised a lot of people here have never heard of Death. They formed in 1983 and their last release was in 2001 after their lead singer (also known as the father of death metal) Chuck Schuldnir died.

Come on...Slayer? Realllly?

As much as I don't "get" 2pac I still understand his importance to the genre. Slayer is like 10,000 2pacs to metal/hard rock.

And every genre of music is good and contains some talent...well everything except emo.

I'm guessing those lines are coming from someone who doesn't appreciate the finer music in life. If you don't like metal, or Death/Slayer than this thread isn't for you.

Also I'd say Slayer contributed more-so to the thrash metal genre than any other. Death however is like... the definition of death metal.

Never said they were. I'm merely referring to lesser-talented bands. It seems they're more widely known than the ones with real talent.

I disagree. Slayer is not the most important thrash metal band, and it never will be.

Please enlighten us to who could possibly have contributed more to thrash than Slayer. Slayer is a Grammy Award winning American thrash metal band founded by guitarists Jeff Hanneman and Kerry King.[2] Slayer rose to fame as a leader of the American thrash metal movement with their 1986 release, Reign in Blood, which has been called "the heaviest album of all time" by Kerrang!.[3] The band is credited as one of the "Big Four" thrash metal bands, along with Metallica, Anthrax, and Megadeth. Slayer is known for its musical traits, involving fast tremolo picking, guitar solos, double bass drumming, and shouting vocals. The band's lyrics and album art, which cover topics such as gore, serial killers, Satanism, religion, genocide and warfare have generated album bans, delays, lawsuits and strong criticism from religious groups and the general public.

I c wut u did thar and it puts a smile on my face:)

Anyway, I'm going with Death. Chuck Shuldiner was the man. I also love the fact that Paul Masvidal and Sean Reinert played on Human. That's instant win right there. Oh and RIP.

As for the whole thrash thing, Kreator > Slayer.

I'm finding it almost impossible to choose.

As has been noted, Slayer has been incredibly important to the Thrash and Death subgenres of metal, and Reign in Blood and South of Heaven, along with some of their other releases, are easily in the pantheon of great thrash metal albums. That said, I love Death, with Human and Individual Thought Patterns being amongst my favorite metal albums.

I'll go with the equal option.

I can't believe more people aren't voting Death! As much as I love Slayer, Death is on a much more mature and technical level than they are. Death takes the cake with no competition in my book.

It's the battle of Almighty Slayer and well Death. There will be casualties. There will be indecisions. I welcome you to the ranks of not being able to choose between them.

In most cases, to things competing against each other generally have something in common, or the same style. Death and Slayer are the exception. One is the definition of thrash metal and the other is the definition of death metal. The only thing they have in common is being the at the forefront and leading in their genre. They both have totally different music styles. They both have different beliefs and focus on different things, such as religion.

Two different types of music, but since Slayer has gone downhill and i will openly bash them in front of all their fanboys, Death. On the other hand nobody ever mentions Chuck Schuldiner turning into a Christian sympathizer later in his life, but still Death.

Tom Araya identifies himself as christian so I dont understand what you are getting at. As for the bands they are too great to choose one over the other. Slayer is great for extreme speed and brutal thrash, while Death has greater creativity, playing skill, and more thoughtful lyrics.
