I've seen a lot of heated discussions on this topic, and I've also seen editorials on the subject. The sides seem to weigh evenly against each other, but I honestly think that even after all of the changes they've made since their introduction to the mainstream (At that point, they were undeniably Nu Metal more than anything else) they still aren't anywhere near the top of the heap. I find most of the stuff unlistenable and juvenile. I mean, when I first took a look at the band in their jumpsuits and horror masks I thought for sure what would be pumping through my speakers when the CD was playing would be pure death metal, but it was more like the bastard child of KoRn and a poor Slayer cover band.

Anyway, what do you guys think?

They have some interesting songs, but I don't listen to them much. I could care less if a musician wears a mask, paints himself, or runs around naked, if the music is nice.

Mallcore. Their latest CD wasn't horrible by any means... but it's about as good as Slipknot can get(which is still terrible).

what makes me mad the most is when people say that Corey Taylor is a good vocalist. I mean, come on! If he ruptured his vocal chords, that should give off the message that he isn't doing the vocals correctly, right?

i think people have unnecessary hate for them. i don't see much of a difference from them to "real" metal bands. i mean really, doesn't this sound like thrash? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YjKLSLXjnIw

I do prefer his clean singing.

I will admit his clean singing is great, but considering that Slipknot mainly uses the yelling, it doesn't count for much. I sort of wish he would stick to clean vocals, I heard some Slipknot song with a lot of yelling, and then some clean section and the clean section sounded amazing!

Trying too hard to be shocking with their stage persona. They're like trying to be like GWAR when everyone knows no one else can be like GWAR.

For that same reason I found myself listening more to Stone Sour and less to Slipknot.

I clearly don't see why Slipknot is hated a lot here, they're not that bad.Sure, they get old after you find heavier and better bands, but you have to admit Spit it Out, Eyeless, Wait and Bleed, Left Behind, etc are pretty good.

I used to think they were pretty good but now I just find them annoying. Or maybe my taste in music has just developed. I think the likes of Slipknot is often a starting point for younger people getting into Metal. That's not to say all Slipknot fans our young, though.

I will be honest as I do own their album Iowa (although they most definately not a breakthrough band for me, just thought I would check them out) and Left Behind is a good song, as with Disasterpiece and Scissors.

Mallcore crap, not Metal in my eyes...

They are very popular at my school, along with other mainstream rock bands such as Disturbed, Korn and such...

Calling a band 'metal' because you think it should be doesn't make it metal. It's not metal, it's nu metal. Nu metal is a genre that evolved from metal. By your logic metal is rock, rock is blues and blues is jazz.

Edit: Cradle of Filth's early stuff is definitely black metal, with gothic influences. Their new stuff I haven't listened to too much, so I won't say more than that they've gone for a more gothic/mainstream audience,

I don't think people would care as much if it weren't for Slipknot fans. From what I've seen, it seems like the stereotype of a Metal fan nowadays is the depressed teenager who has this completely dark look that, in and of itself, is laughable. Now us true Metal fans know that the image is there for shock value, but it seems like the new and impressionable fans actually think it's a part of life. The generation of now no longer sees Metal fans as the guys with Kuttes that are filled with patches of their favorite bands and the guys with long hair, but as a downing look that is very similar, if not related to, the emo look.

Who cares about impressions? "Us metalheads"? Just enjoy your music and let them enjoy theirs. If they find happiness in Slipknot or whatever it is... On a sidenote, I'd like to share that I just listened to Siva rather atentiously, in an "enhanced" state, and I can say it is, in my opinion, one of the best songs ever.

I'd have to say the worst part of Slipknot is their lame fans.

The worst breed is those REALLY fat, ugly manly girls that wear the big ass Slipknot shirts that are big enough to be a blanket on an average person.

We've all seen them at one point in life... and once you do, the image is carved into your brain forever.

Thats not exactly my point. I am criticizing people that call metal bands they don't like "not metal".

I don't give rat's arse about which band I like when it comes to genres. Please tell me how Slipknot are metal? Which part of their music makes them 'metal'?

Oh trust me, I take pride in what I listen to. It just annoys me when people find out that I like Metal and say that I don't look like a Metal fan. Hopefully this will change once I find a Denim Jacket and make my own kutte, but who knows. Just a pet peeve I have.

Do you have to look like a metalfan? What's it change? Sometimes I go out wearing jeans and a band T, sometimes I just look like.. anyone. Black T, leather jacket and jeans. I like my music, that's good enough for me.

True that the Metal fashion isn't important, but there is nothing wrong with showing pride in what you listen.

Never said there's anything wrong in it. I said I wear band shirts quite often (Slayer shirt this very moment).

Fortunately not all Slipknot fans look like that.

True, but the ones that do are really hurting your cause. Those are the ones that stick out the most, so they're the most stereotyped as a typical Slipknot fan.

I think some of their songs are good. I only recently heard them a few months back andthey arealright. I just like great music really, regardless of "genre" rules people must place.

1. Heavy distortion plus some death metalish-riffs

2. Throbbing double bass

3. Lyrics refer to rebellion, teenage angst, suicide, and even political themes (most recent in their new album)

4. Vocalist screams out the verses with occasional melodic parts

5. Attitude is mostly "I'm all alone and no one is here to help me", a part of most metal bands.

Hopefully most people will stop dissing Slipknot as "non-metal" because clearly most of these people only heard the 30 second clips for 3 seconds on Itunes.
