Trading bibles for porn?

Emotions ran high last week when an atheist group asked UTSA students to trade in their Bibles for pornographic magazines.

On Monday afternoon, the group set up a table on campus for their "Smut for Smut" trade offer. The group featured a sign at their table that read, "Trade in Holy Text 4 Porn."

Nearby, some students gathered in protest by reading their Bibles and praying.

Seems a bit insecure to me to spend time worrying about divergent beliefs. Guess the porn wasn't good enough to occupy their time.

Athiests don't need to believe in God, but that's a pretty stupid thing to do.

I concur...no matter what your beliefs are, there is no reason to do something like that...they are just trying to inflame and belittle...which, in turn, only made them (the atheists) look worse IMO

Its pathetic because its a protest.Every Christian knows that praying to God doesn't guarantee divine intervention, God gave us free will to deal with our problems, its not up to him.So y'know, maybe the Christians should do something more assertive than praying to God like, y'know, actually confronting the porn traders? And before anyone jumps on this, confronting =/= violence.

"confronting =/= violence" what do you want them to do, step up and say "Dont listen to the sinners, they are going to Hell" or "Plz give us the bibles". Those atheists crossed their line, and by praying, those Christians showed them that they can and will continue to be Christians and theists in general.

The bible is a symbol of Christianity, i think its pretty clear that those guys meant "Hey you, give up your dam Christianity and immerse yourself in the sin".

You don't know that. You'll also know if you read the article that they intended to donate the bibles to the local library.Goes to show that intent to recylce the bible for others was there so that nullifys your point. You also didn't answer my question.

They're athiests. This means they don't follow standards set by the bible, in this case, the idea that porn is wrong. That is called barter, and has been around for centuries. In the end, the athiests donated to local libraries for a good cause, a cause that may spread Christianity if anything.

I doubt they were praying for divine intervention...more like praying for strength to be the bigger person or praying for those that do not agree with them -confrontation would have been the least effective means of handling the situation...what would it have done besides make the Christians look bad

It would have actually made the Christians look good, because it would give them the strength, as you put it, to be the bigger people and show they're not afraid to stand up for what they believe in.As I said before, what good is reciting something that the athiests don't believe in?

Because the fact that someone holds different beliefs obviously bothered these atheists......so that would bother them as well....psychological.

I'm sure thats not entirely accurate. As someone above said, I'm sure its dumb kids being dumb kids.As a moderate Catholic, it doesn't bother me if someone has different beliefs, and it shouldn't bother anyone.Even if that were true, it still didn't stop them trading did it?

Nobody said the Christians were afraid and I don't belive in that saying of fear driving people to do stupid things. For example, your being faced down in an alleway with three men armed with knives in front of you baying for your blood.Fear takes hold and you run, and get away.Dunno about you but thats pretty smart in my opinion. I never said it was for the benefit of the athiests either, its quite hard to convert athiests by reciting the bible. The point I'm making is that the Christians might as well have turned the other cheek by confiding in the bible, because it made no progress in the situation from what I can see.

I had hoped that you would be able to understand the type of fear I was talking about...
-I was referring to how some people act out towards others b/c they fear what they do not understand...not the fight or flight type of fear

From what I can tell, that is exactly what they did...just turn the other cheek and read the bible

But this is going no where fast...have a great day :)

meh.. sometimes people just do stuff to inflame others...

I'd hope that they had some more developed, though still utterly broken, logic to at least justify this plan to themselves, though.

Perhaps it was the tequila.....:o

It doesn't sound like a plan, just a way to be sensational.

That would explain a lot; I've seen a lot of people led to spectacularly bad decisions via tequila

[QUOTE="Bitter_Altmer"][QUOTE="Travo_basic"]

Nearby, some students gathered in protest by reading their Bibles and praying.

ROFL Thats sentence is the most pathetic thing I've ever heard.

Why exactly? im not Christian and i dont particularly support them, but this seems a very rational thing to do in such an event.

Rational?

I mean sure they can react to what they saw, but what is reading the Bible in front of them gonna achieve? Are they... exorcising somehow the filthy place of abhorrent "tradings" by reading Bible verses?

Are they gonna bring in a priest with holy water to sprinkle some on the non-believers as well?

But anyway if anything its just funny to me.

What is it with college activists and wanton vulgarity?

I think it's reasonable to be a bit offended if someone calls your holy text "smut."

What's wrong with a peaceful protest?
