I'll go ask someone who's died and get back to you on that.

How would I know? Isn't it arrogant to presume to know? The only people who could know are dead.

When you die then it's just the way it were before you were born, you do no longer exist and thus there is nothing.

Varies from person to person. I'm not exactly atheist (agnostic), but I believe in spirits. When you die, your energy that makes up your being continues on.

what ??

Scientifically, our consciousness, memories and personality are defined by our physical bodies and chemical reactions within our brain. We have not empirically identified a soul, or a life-force, or anything that can be said to physically survive the death of the body. Therefore, scientifically, death is seen as the end. This differs from faith, where the fundamental tenent is this is not all that we are, ergo we can survive death in some form (whether it be reincarnation in Hinduism, Heaven and Hell in Christianity, Jannah in Islam, etc.)

As an atheist I'll give you the best answer I can. When the human brain is in alot of stress or dying, it gives off chemicals that prevent pain (much like when you get hurt really bad in the arm or something you can't feel it that much) well like that. Some people have very vivid hallucinations (near death experiance), I believe when we all die we will have this. But that does not mean there is a god, so that's how I see death. Hope I did my best to answer your topic gubrushadow. Anytime.

what do you think will happen after you die?

gubrushadow
Nothing. Death is the annihilation of the self according to my view. It's pretty simple reasoning really. I posit that conscious thought, sapience and every other signifier of the self are functions of the physical brain. Once the brain ceases to function conscious thought and everything else no longer occurs and "I" no longer exist. That's it really, annihilation.

An atheist is simply someone who doesn't believe in God or gods. Beyond that, there is no common doctrine.

I'd like to point out that Atheists only share the belief of there being no Gods, there are no other universally accepted opinions on anything else. Personally as an Atheist, I believe that the Universe around you goes on after you die, you are just no longer there to perceive it as your major organs (namely heart and brain) no longer function. It's basically what happened before you were conceived and born, but in reverse. The universe was there, then your organs were produced and you started perceiving it. Life and death is nothing more.

Definitely the latter. That's like asking whether or not you want to be able to feel pain continuously for eternity.

Atheism does not go necessarily hand in hand with naturalism.

In other words an atheist doesnt necessarily exclude the possibility of the existence of the supernatural or some form of afterlife.

They just doubt or flat-out disbelieve the existence of a diety.

Well, you are dead. Simple as that. Metabolic pathways stopsfunctioning, your body stops and with it of course your conscience goes too. No more of you.

To be more poetic, the molecules that you consisted of are returned to the universe.

No, it's not a joke, I think there is some form of energy, it's just the energy that keeps you living, it can't be lost.

There is no set view on death for atheists, so the most you'll get are personal opinions. In my opinion, it'll be like endless sleep.

Basically what others have said, same thing that happens before you were born, nothing, no more existence. I think this is much better than the concept of an afterlife, and I actually find it a comfortable point of view.

In this thread, people project from their own beliefs unto all Atheists/non-religious. The belief that there is no God does not necessitate lack of after life.

Too bad "nobody knows" is the real answer. But really, so long as there's no proof of an actual afterlife, our best guess is that when our brains cease function, our senses go with it... which is basically complete blankness, but without consciousness we won't even be aware it's blankness anyway. Now as for what the transition to that would be like? Well, nobody knows...

EDIT: And there's no such thing as a feeling "before you come to life" because it's coming to life (ie. consciousness beginning in the womb... or in the lab, whatever the case may be) that creates feelings in the first place. The transition from having life to not having it is another manner altogether.
