[QUOTE="-Jiggles-"]I love how this thread started out as a relationship advice thread and slowly transformed into a religious debate on homosexuality by a bunch of insecure, homophobic fundamentalists.
Seriously people, this is pathetic.

Except that the homosexual in question is very religious himself, as am I (and I'm here to support him against socially autistic atheists who are seeing this as an opportunity to evangelize for their lack of faith and condemn him as "stupid").
In fact, the only fundies I've seen since I joined this debate are the proselytizing atheists. If some Christian fundies showed up earlier in the debate, that's pitiable...but we seem to be having a touch of a problem with that of late.
You can sugarcoat it all you want, but the overall outcome is the same; a seemingly innocent thread was overrun by a bunch of extremist nuts, turning it into an incoherent battle royale between Jesus freaks, atheist scum and homophobes from all corners of the forum.

There hasn't been a single debate between a religious nut and a homosexual. Read the thread.
Okay, one more...can't resist. Why so over-zealous?

Maybe, exposing my views on religion right away was the wrong way to open this dialogue... All I'm saying is that being celibate is a big choice. When making decisions of this nature, it's only logical to explore all aspects. If you've already done so, great, I hope you have a happy life, albeit without sex. If not, however, there's only two things that could possibly happen. Either you find something better than your current philosophy or your faith in the Catholic religion is strengthened after some thorough soul searching.WtFDragon
FAIL!
Theo isn't Catholic. That would be me. :) Irrelevant
And why does it bother me? Well, because I have a very strong opinion on your religion.espoac
Um...that's nice?
An atheists goal in matters such as this is at least to create some sort of doubt in the believer's mind-something that will make them re-examine their choices and views.espoac
Thanks for evangelizing! But do you honestly expect that you'll plant some seeds of doubt in a web forum? Do you honestly expect to change someone's mind. Evangelizing, oh...I see what you did there!Regardless, if you come into a discussion with an open mind, yes, even on the internet your mind can be changed.
DOn't know about Theo, but I've heard almost every argument atheists have had to offer. And I've come through it a stronger, more faithful Catholic...precisely because when I see the sorts of folks that array themselves against my faith, I am continually convinced of just how real and true that faith is. Great for you.
Most atheists care because to be honest the religious person that denies themselves things for god has pretty much become a stereotype, a sad one at that.espoac
Why sad? We all give things up for different reasons -- we alter our diet for the sake of our health, we alter our expenditures to save money in tight times. If we believe in a living, personal, present Lord, why wouldn't we make the odd adjustment -- even a big adjustment -- to our life****because of it? And why is that sad, or unhealthy? Sad to me because he's giving up one of life's greatest pleasures for a nonexistant being, that's why.
Not that this necessarily describes you, but at least you can understand my motivation for engaging you in dialogue.espoac
If it doesn't describe him...why mention it? Because I'm not sure if it describes him.

Sadly, I have read the thread and I don't like what I've seen.
Yes, there hasn't been any arguements between a religious nut and a homosexual as of now, but I'm not talking about homosexuals fighting; I'm talking about homosexuality as a whole (it's practice, morality, etc) and the people here attacking it.
G'night, by the way.

You're arrogant, you know that? You really think you're going to convince him that God doesn't exist. Don't you realize he came to his own conclusion not because some user on GameSpot convinced him so?

I'd suggest you don't bother with espoac. Just like how Theokhoth won't be convinced that God doesn't exist by a Gamespot user, you won't convince espoac about how arrogant he himself is. He'll never understand how arrogant he is over the Gamespot OT forum.

I'm arrogant because I'm doing what he asked me to do?:o And here I though I was being the nice atheist of the bunch...Find his myspace or facebook and do a little detective work first. Good signs are where it says Interested In: if its blank it's usually a good sign for you. Also you can see his photos and get a good judge on what he is like outside of class. I have quite a few gay guy friends, the ones that aren't so open about it have the blank interested in part on their social networking sites and their photos all seem to overcompensate around female friends, making them look like they are "with" the girls. It's very obvious to tell this way.
Oh, also try to look him up on Dlist.com I didn't know what this site was until one of my good gay friends told me my gay roommate looked him up on it and was talking about me thinking I wasn't going to find out :) (Not talking about me in a bad way, but it was funny when I called him out)

Which is kind of sad. I mean, I'm atheist, and while I do dislike seeing people "denied" things because of religion, that's their choice and if they're getting something out of it then who am I to complain.
There are always intolerant people on both sides of the plate. Those people need to get off their soapbox, throw their egos and self-rightousness aside, and 'Live and Let Live'.
I'm arrogant because I'm doing what he asked me to do?:o And here I though I was being the nice atheist of the bunch...espoac
Well, it is true that he asked you, but should it have gotten to that point? I mean, his original post didn't include anything about being a Christian, and he only talked about it only after someone brought it up.
I don't know how it got to that point. I haven't read this thread in its entirety, but do you still think you can prove something to him? Does the question Theo provided even needs to answer to satisfy this thread? No, it doesn't.

I'm an agnostic, but if I were to take sides, I would be an atheist. However, I think that there are more intolerant atheists in my view. Most atheists piss me off more than Christians.
I shouldn't be talking though. I've been unnecessarily mean in this thread.
[QUOTE="Deity_Slapper"][QUOTE="WtFDragon"]Why? Can not we believe that we are being tested? Besides, its not the state of being homosexual that Theo really thinks is wrong; what he thinks is wrong is the acts themselves. He can separate, in his mind, the act from the actor, and so to his mind homosexuality -- the state of being -- is not wrong, and is not in conflict with his view that any sexual act, heterosexual or homosexual, is wrong if it happens outside of marriage betwen a man and a woman.
That's hardly a destructive belief.Theokhoth
Not only destructive, yes, but just plain stupid. Like I said earlier, it's like saying that it's ok to be a vegetarian, but never eating meat is sinful. It's a catch 22, or more precisely, just a vicious trap. You can't keep going in circles forever. Eventually, he's going to want to break from the mundane, monotone nature of such a belief system, and find out the meaning behind his emotions...not just blindly accepting them for fear that he might upset an imaginary, unseen deity.
Here's a surprise for you: I don't believe the way you do. I pray to God that I never will. Again, homosexual acts =/= homosexual attractions. Your analogy is flawed. Just to give some constructive criticism.
If for whatever reason I decide I can't handle life as a celibate, you know what I'll do? Marry a girl.
That sounds hella fair to her...[QUOTE="espoac"]I'm arrogant because I'm doing what he asked me to do?:o And here I though I was being the nice atheist of the bunch...Genetic_Code

It certainly wasn't me who brought the discussion into the realm of religion. In fact I only started posting in this thread 2 pages ago.Maybe you should make the distinction between someone who's arrogant and someone who's confidant in their stances. I said I'd show Theo, not convince him, in fact I'd be very surprised if he renounced his faith on Gamespot OT. By show I meant display an argument, nothing more. And please don't try to make this about semantics.
You, however, jumped at the chance to throw accusations at me. Not that it surprises me. In every theistic debate those who oppose us atheists always throw out the "arrogant" and "hypocrite" insults. To my chagrin I've seen both of those here tonight.

At first everything was fine. Then someone brought up how the Bible condones child molestation. Then someone mentioned that being a gay Christian is an oxymoron. Then Deity_slapper came in and just had to help this poor soul.

Ummm he is catholic, not chrisitan, the bible believing christians (like me) dont consider theo to be christian, I just wanted to sort the whole who is christian, because many claim to be christian. But few actually meet the requirements that god stated in his book. I mean come on, you can't serve two master, theo is being gay and trying to be christian, jesus said you can't have it both ways. Most likely he will hate one, like the other, so far he likes being gay does not care about what god said about homosexuals.

1. Catholics are Christians.
2. "You can't serve two master [sic]"... what? How is homosexuality a 'master', let alone more of a 'master' than heterosexuality?
3. Actually, I'm willing to bet he does care what God said about homosexuals. You know, what with being a Christian and all.
