Well i've started listening to metal for about a couple of months after hearing through fire and flames on Guitar hero 3. So afterwards i went to listen to some dragonforce music and it was sooo good :D . But anyways apart from finding sonata arctica, Stratovarius, dragonland, Kamelot, a few of helloween's songs, Only for the weak by In Flames, some of Trivium's songs, Lordi, etc. This is pretty much a list of most of the metal bands i like. Just so yu know i don't really like death metal or trash metal. So if yu guys could reccomend me some good power/ speed/ heavy type metal bands id be grateful OT ;) .

Edit: try to name some of the bands best songs, because, while i tried quite a lot of bands, the songs i listened to din't really do anything for me so i just din't listen to that band anymore....

Black Sabbath Iron Maiden Ozzy Osbourne Judas Priest Dio Heaven and Hell (they only have one studio album, but it's good) Led Zeppelin (I've heard arguments over whether it's rock or metal, but it doesn't really matter, because it's a great band) Rainbow

Megadeth, iron maiden, metallica (stick to the older stuff...), led zepellin. That should start you off easily. There are others of course, but they're a bit harder to listen to for a newbie:P.

Cool, Kreator and Sodom are great Thrash bands, and Machine Head are one of the best 90's Groove Metal bands. But a band I would highly recommend getting into would be Megadeth.Out of all those bands they are the most technical. It takes a little while to get into them though. It all depends if you have the patience :)

Power metal:

Blind Guardian

Dark Moor

Falconer

Gamma Ray

Hammerfall

Nightwish

Rhapsody (of fire)

If you're just getting started, you'll like Gamma Ray's Land Of The Free II album. It's very easy to get in to.

Fear Factory

-Misanthropic-

I love you for saying that. My Fear Factory topic went nowhere

Soul ofa New Machine was such a hard album.

Umm, TC try Sepultura - Chaos AD. Dimmu Borgir. Mayhem ... I actual like Avenged Sevenfold, even though they are all like 5 years younger than me and NuMetal. Their stuff is decent. Slayer is the ultimate for speed/thrash though. I can't get enough of em.

Only for the Weak isn't a bad start. At least it is on Clayman, and though it's not as good as the older In Flames like (colony, jester race, whoracle), that album was still great and should by no means be compared to the garbage that followed. But yeah guy, just listen to more In Flames if you like that song, they have a ton of good songs.

Iron Maiden and Judas Priest are my favorites, along with Wintersun lately. (Strange mix of Folk, Power and Death metal) Also heard some Pantera for the first time yesterday, pretty cool I think. Some others: Static X Silent Civilian BLAZE or Blaze Bayley (was the singer for Maiden for a while) Children Of Bodom

Blind Guardian and Divinefire is the only Power Metal bands that I like that I would personally recommend. This youtube video has nothing but clips of power metal bands in it, so it might help you find something new. Here

Some other metal bands that I would recommend though are:

Savotage (Symphony/Progressive Metal)

Deliverence (Early:Thrash Metal/ Newer: Progressive Metal)

Tourniquet (Thrash Metal)

Nightwish (Symphony Metal)

Be forewarned the bands Divinefire, Deliverence and Tourniquet are what you would consider Christian metal bands. Just thought I'd let you know.

I am so happy on how "The Devil You Know" turned out. I was a little worried that they might try to 'update' their sound and style. Some bands do that in an attempt to get some of that mainstream cash. Which alienates their established fanbase and completely changes what they are known for. I find it awesome buying a newly released album today that sounds like it would have if it was released 20 years earlier.

Melodic Death Metal:

Arch Enemy
Opeth (also very progressive at times)
In Flames
Mastadon (sort of)
Children of Bodom
and a lot more

Thrash Metal:

Metallica (old stuff)
Megadeth
Slayer
Anthrax
Pantera (they are groove metal as well I guess)
Throwdown
Testament
Exodus

Heavy Metal:

Manowar
Judas Priest
Black Sabbath
Iron Maiden
Motorhead

Progressive, Speed, Other:

Queensryche (these guys are kind of old school as well)
Dream Theater
DragonForce
System of a Down (their more alternative metalish, some people say they are nu-metal)

And there are SOOOO much more man, I hope you find some of these bands good :)

Dragonforce isn't metal. They aren't ''sooo good11one!'' They are horrible. Mkay? Just thought I'd get that out of the way. Now we can start you off with the real stuff. Metallica Megadeth Iron Maiden Led Zepellin Black Sabbath Lamb of God Immortal Vader In Flames Iced Earth Celtic Frost Slayer Exodus Illnath Chimaira Children of Bodom Also, Trivium isn't metal either. Its mainstream pop rock. Please don't listen to Dragonforce. Please.

Boy oh boy, have I got the band for you. Children of Bodom. Let them be your gateway into heavier things (as they were for me)! :P

Some awesome songs of theirs:

Are You Dead Yet?

Downfall

Lake Bodom

Mask of Sanity

And an awesome demonstration by CoB that really earned them my respect:

Guitar exercises

Exactly. I love the work Dio did with Black Sabbath, even if I preferred the Ozzy era. This is more or less the Dio era Sabbath releasing a new album, and it turned out well :D.
