So today I was in Target looking at books, and when I arrive there I hear this teenaged girl, no younger than 16, begging her daddy for some Twilight-esque vampire book for girls. The conversation went something like this:

"Please, daddy, can I get it?"

"No, I haven't read it."

"But I have all the others in the series!"

"No, you're not getting it."

"Well, can I just get *insert inaudible book title here*?"

"No, I haven't read it!"

"Well, can I just get this book?? PLEASE!!"

"NO!"

Then when they walked off, I hear ANOTHER teenaged girl, about 15:

"Oh, mom, can I get this book?" (Note: it was the same exact book the other girl was whining about)

"No, we came for another book, now get it."

"But I want this one!"

"No! Get the one you originally wanted and listen to me."

"But what's wrong with this one? It's cheaper!"

"You need to listen to me or you won't get anything!"

"But moooooooom!"

"All right; you know what? I wasn't going to tell you this, but since you won't listen, I already got that book for you for Christmas! But now you're probably not getting it because you won't listen."

"I'm sorry! Geez, how am I supposed to know??"

They left after that.

:|:|:|:|

Seriously, I cannot stand it when I hear peoples' precious little snowflakes pitch a hissy fit in the store, but it makes me want to grab a weapon and go Spartan on people when I hear a teenaged boy/girl act like a four-year-old over a damn toy/book/game.

What spoiled brat scenes have you witnessed in the middle of the store? They should be running rampant at this time of year.

My sister is the exact same way, and as much as I plead with my parents to teach her discipline and respect, I just get shot down and have to hear her incessant whines when I go home to visit. It is very very frustrating to even look at.

Sounds like the kids were being reasonable. For God's sake, it is a book that they are asking for. Why is a girl not allowed to read something because her father hasn't read it? And why even tell the kid like that that you got them a present? Just tell them that you'll get it for them some other time. Sounds like the parents were the morons here

I can see someone not allowing thier kid to have everything for not spoiling them or for cost reasons but because they haven't read it? Now that's just weird. Also if she's 16 she should be given an allowance and atleast expected to budget for all her luxuraries.

Thats the first time I've heard of someone having a hissy-fit over a BOOK. Preferablly, when I become a parent, I'd want my children to want books. I mean don't get me wrong, no kid of 16 or 15 should go on for that long after the parent has said no, but I would encourage my child to read.

My story relates to something I saw at the mall today. It's not involving a teenager, but it might as well for how mature the people involved were. As I pieced together from what I overheard from a phone call and later events, this woman's purse somehow got caught on some part of this other lady's car. The second lady didn't notice, so she started to drive off, knocking the first lady to the ground before stopping and realizing what happened. Then the first lady decided that the correct course of action was to promptly call the police and request that they press assault charges on the second lady. I left to go into the mall, but when I came back a police car was actually on the scene.

I wasn't able to see the end of it, but I hope that the police officer slapped the first lady and told her to get more excitement in life. I was just like :|

"Mommy can I get some candy?" *he was pointing at a bag od skittles*

"No, you have plenty of candy at home"

little brat proceeds to scream at the top of his lungs.

And the mother BUYS THE KID THE SKITTLES!!!!

If that was my child the moment he began to scream I would have smacked him acrossed the mouth.

How should I know? I've never read the book. But I know the father's logic: He wants to read her books before she does to make sure she doesn't read anything inappropriate. He's overprotective.

I saw a girl in Best Buy go crazy because her mom wouldn't buy her an Amy Winehouse CD. As I walked up to them she was screaming all this nonsense like, "I hate you," "I wish I was never born," "You never buy me anything I want," "I'm gonna go live with dad." The entire time the mom had a huge WTF look on her face. I would've laughed if I hadn't been so annoyed.

If I had a kid who ever decided to lose their mind in a public place like that, they'd be walking home.

I dunno, maybe he couldn't be arsed to buy it or something. Anyway, it's pretty stupid of the father to assume that it's unsuitable by default.

Also, the way the mother told her daughter she was getting it as a gift was incredibly rude. When I'm out with my mom and she doesn't want me buying something because she may be getting it for me as a gift she usually gives a subtle hint such as, Christmas is soon, you never know what you'll be getting, so just wait a while.

I can understand that the way they acted was kinda stupid especially with the 2nd one but the parent in the first story sounded a bit stupid. Not letting her 16 year old daughter get a book because he hasn't read it. I'm sorry btu thats jsut unreasonable, so because he hasnt read every piece of literiture she isnt allowed to read books. The reaction may of been off hand but the father sounded like an tool. Trying to shelter a 16 year old is just ridiculous and stupid.

The woman was fed up with her daughter's whining, so she flat-out told her that she'd bought it for Christmas to get her to shut the hell up. I think the mother is fully in the right. She didn't want to get her the book in the first place because she already bought it--for Christmas.

What were you shopping for?

I was doing a favor for my grandparents and getting their Christmas gifts for my uncle. I paid a visit to the books section while I was at it. >_>

[QUOTE="socked_feet"]The second situation confuses me. The mother wouldn't allow her daughter to have the book because it "wasn't the one she originally wanted" even though it was cheaper? Now that is weird. Also, the way the mother told her daughter she was getting it as a gift was incredibly rude. When I'm out with my mom and she doesn't want me buying something because she may be getting it for me as a gift she usually gives a subtle hint such as, Christmas is soon, you never know what you'll be getting, so just wait a while.Theokhoth

The woman was fed up with her daughter's whining, so she flat-out told her that she'd bought it for Christmas to get her to shut the hell up. I think the mother is fully in the right. She didn't want to get her the book in the first place because she already bought it--for Christmas.

She still didn't have to do it so rudely. That just completely ruined the surprise. And the girl was hardly whining; she wanted a cheaper book, she simply changed her mind.

Patience is a virtue -- I'm with socked feet on this one. The parents are as ill-tempered as the children were bratty -- someone let them get to that point and it sure as hell wasn't me.
