[QUOTE="cheeselover"][QUOTE="Theokhoth"]Gosh man, your being kind of pretentious. No matter what everyone says, you keep shutting them down. The kid was probably asking for Twilight, not some novels featuring rape scenes. Like, wtf. the problem is these kids are spoiled as hell and kick and scream until they get what they want, this isnt good the father was trying to show her she cant always get what she wants. Maybe the dad didnt have the money for it. Or maybe hes never read twilight and doesnt know what to expect, he was totally justified with his actions as a father. However both parents need to teach there kids a lesson or two in manners you dont behave like that...shes 16? she wants it so bad she can work for it!Kids want to read =/= kids are entitled to every book they want.
sparkypants
Well, they were at the book section. Im pretty sure they were set on buying a book. 16 and an overreaction to a book called "twilight"? shes old enough to read most books. also, if the case was she should get a job, the dad shouldve said that.
It's not like she was asking for 20 books. Just one book.
well, reading is good, but not always acceptable for teens, however twilight esque books seem reasonableFracturemasterwell no is saying the kid shouldnt be allowed to read, we are commenting on her behavior and how do you expect the father to know whats in twilight? Hes allowed to read the book before he lets his daughter read it, hes being a good parent. Its not like hes saying YOU CANT READ! hes saying I have to read it first. Maybe he made a mental note and is going to pick it up and read it later(maybe he was like the women and bought it for her for christmas). The point isnt the denial of the book the child's immature actions in the store.

Rewarding bad behavior never, ever works. It just makes it worse. And who cares if it's one or twenty books? The parent is buying it.
Hmm, bad behavior? It seemed like a kid who overreacted to her father overreacting. that wouldve been better said.

shes 16, and shopping for books at target. inappropriate books in target? not really. besides, why would she want to get an inappropriate book?
and the surprise thing? How bout just a book now and a little present later?
Oh, immature actions? it was an overreaction to an overreaction.
how do you know they were out to buy a book(the second time with the women yes,but you dont know the first parents intentions) they could be browsing the section getting an idea for christmas or just walking by. I spend most of my time in the game section just looking around doesnt mean Im going to get anything. sure shes old enough(age wise) but she sure as hell doesnt act her age. Based on her maturity level Id recommend cliffered the big red dog. Yes the dad should have said get a job, but you would hope at her age it would click in her head "hey I can work now and by my own books with my own money."Well, they were at the book section. yes, but thats video games. Books are good. why would it be wrong to buy a book? It's not like shes asking for one every week, or asking for 20 books ( as ive mentioned )

they sell R rated movies and M rated games, what makes you think they would hold out on books?yeah and? they walked by she saw it and asked he said no because he hasnt read it and doesnt know what to expect from the book, hes not denying her the chance to read because she mention she has the other ones which means chances are she got him to get her those too. Video games, books, movies...it doesnt matter she shouldnt be able to get whatever she wants just by begging and pleading. The way she acted was inappropriate and disrespectful not only to her father but to the other customers in the store. after he gave his reason as to why she couldnt have the book she should have dropped it but no she whined like the brat she is."Well, can I just get this book?? she already has all the books from the series except for this one. why would this one be bad all of a sudden? It doesnt seem like she was begging and pleading too much, just a "ok comeon pleeeease??". thats not as bad as I saw some kids do, especially over video games. by the quotes, it doesnt look like she whined that much.
yes it Target, Iv seen those sexual romance novels sold at Target yes TARGET! and clearly by her attitude she cant!wow its TARGET. what type of books do you expect them to sell there? Besides, 16 year olds can handle r rated movies and m games.

so what if she had the other books, that dad hasnt read THIS book and doesnt know what to expect from THIS book. and yes I wasnt there to see her whine so I cant tell you how annoying she was but if it was bad enough for the TC to post a topic about it Id image it was bad and based on what Iv seen growing up(I live around a very wealthy community and alot of the kids are spoiled) I have a good idea on the type of girl she is. She is spoiled her behavior was out of line end of story.she already has all the books from the series except for this one. why would this one be bad all of a sudden? 1. I doubt a 16 year old would be looking for a book like that.
2. thats like saying JK Rowling coming out with a book called "Harry Potter and his secret sexual pleasures".
well a lot of people here are not necessarily brats for it, but you pretty much have to be spoiled if you have so many video games you go on to websites to discuss them. the majority of the people here probably come from families with like four times the average family income. not to troll, just to remind you guys that you all have a lot of nice things as well, for the most part.quiglythegreatI see what your saying but you shouldnt make the stereotype. Not everyone in here is spoiled, with the exception of christmas and my birthday most of the games Iv gotten came from my own wallet or because I worked around the house(dont have a job right now because no one wants to hire) because I dont have a job I dont have a car because my mom refuses to pay for me. Also there are plenty of people here that are old enough to support themselves. so while Im sure there are a few spoiled people around here you shouldnt be quick to judge ;)
1, no one reads those except middle age housewives but thats not the point, the point is the material is out there and its at TARGET! 2. its funny you mention Harry Potter, while the series didnt go over the hill, there sure was an increase in the amount of violence in the series and the series went from a 11+ rating to 14+, the series was also banned in a few areas. http://www.educationworld.com/a_admin/admin/admin157.shtml1. what?! you missed the point entirely...this was to show that the material in books can change and mature if the writer feels the need to. So the father was right to check the book before saying ok. and I dont care how old she is, she lives under her fathers roof and there for his rules and if he says no the answers no...the child should understand this! Here is a similar conversation between my son and I not that long ago.
Son: I want that (points to large truck).
Me: No. We came here to get something for Mom and then we're leaving.
Son: I want it!
Me: (Looks at son)
Son: (Shuts up and never mentions it again)
My son is at the point that all my wife and I have to do is look his direction and he knows he crossed a line that should not have been crossed.
It sounds like the Dad is being reasonable and I certainly do not want my son reading, watching, or listening to anything unless my wife or I research the product ourselves and know everything we can about it. Finally, when we say "no", this is not a debate.

How do you do that? Tell me.Wow...that was awesome. Still, when that kid becomes a teenager it may get a little more complicated...that's when they star questioning authority. :PHere is a similar conversation between my son and I not that long ago.

That is awesome, I hope that is good parenting as opposed to punishments! I don't think you should necessarily make a child someone who will be walked over for their whole life though. Here is a similar conversation between my son and I not that long ago.

Just watch any "Super Sweet 16" episode and wait for the famous line: "If my parent's don't get me this car, I will be so mad"barcx17I was talking to a friend about SS16 and hes like "they get this girl a hummer and shes complaining cos she wanted a different colour! Bro, I would kill for a hummer!" Couple this with a Samoan accent and it was quite an enjoyable conversation :P
