[QUOTE="socked_feet"]The second situation confuses me. The mother wouldn't allow her daughter to have the book because it "wasn't the one she originally wanted" even though it was cheaper? Now that is weird. Also, the way the mother told her daughter she was getting it as a gift was incredibly rude. When I'm out with my mom and she doesn't want me buying something because she may be getting it for me as a gift she usually gives a subtle hint such as, Christmas is soon, you never know what you'll be getting, so just wait a while.socked_feet

The woman was fed up with her daughter's whining, so she flat-out told her that she'd bought it for Christmas to get her to shut the hell up. I think the mother is fully in the right. She didn't want to get her the book in the first place because she already bought it--for Christmas.

She still didn't have to do it so rudely. That just completely ruined the surprise. And the girl was hardly whining; she wanted a cheaper book, she simply changed her mind.

The girl most certainly was whining. You weren't there, but she was louder than the text makes it appear. >_>

When I pitched a fit, my ass got beat. And I never, EVER acted that way as a teenager. I'm fully justified in complaining about teenagers acting like spoiled four-year-olds.

If I was there I would stuck my head around to where they were and said "just get the ******* book your mum tells you to get!" I seriously have no patience with those sorts of things. One time I was at McDonalds and a woman was getting her 4 year old son to pay for the ******* meal and it was keeping quite a few people up, so I asked her to "just pay for the damn food", and she did.

Not really bratty, but annoying all the same.

Exactly. The parents are just as responsible (if not fully) in creating this spoiled brats. And yet all I see here is blaming the teens. The parents are obviously lacking in certain departments and that is why that is the type of negotiating relationship they have.

Your issues -- and yet you brought it up as a reason as to why you're not a spoiled brat (IMO has nothing to do with the topic but you used yourself as an example of someone who never acted up so here we are).

I'm spoiled, but I'm not really a brat. I'm just asking for a membership to Bally's, a Blackberry Storm, a few games for my PS3 and 360, and some jeans, long-sleeved shirts, sweaters, polo's, and other stuff from Abercrombie, Hollister and Aeropostale. It's quite a bit, but I know that I deserve it, and I don't care what other people have to say about it. Also, if my mom didn't get me this stuff, I would just go to my dad or grandparents, no harm done. So I'm spoiled, but DEFINITELY not a brat.

I can understand that the way they acted was kinda stupid especially with the 2nd one but the parent in the first story sounded a bit stupid. Not letting her 16 year old daughter get a book because he hasn't read it. I'm sorry btu thats jsut unreasonable, so because he hasnt read every piece of literiture she isnt allowed to read books. The reaction may of been off hand but the father sounded like an tool. Trying to shelter a 16 year old is just ridiculous and stupid.htotheo
yeah I agree. the father should have read the summary at the back of the book (and if still not convinced read an excerpt from the book) and then make an informed decision whether it is suitablle or not. That kid totally relies on the father's leisure time to read the books she wants, and he might be busy with work and never get the time thus she never gets to read the books she wants to, that's just bs!

How can you make an informed decision based on an excerpt or a summary? If the girl wanted, say, The Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett, and the dad just read the summary on the back and let her read it, do you think he would have known about the graphic rape scenes in the book?

The dad definitely is overprotective, but come on, a summary or an excerpt wouldn't help at all.

Sounds like the kids were being reasonable. For God's sake, it is a book that they are asking for. Why is a girl not allowed to read something because her father hasn't read it? And why even tell the kid like that that you got them a present? Just tell them that you'll get it for them some other time. Sounds like the parents were the morons herecheeselover

maybe not, but I still think it's unreasonable. He could always do some research and find out the target audience for a book which in this case is definitely teenage girls which his daughter falls into. Or he could have even asked staff if it is appropriate. He doesn't need to read every book she wants before he lets her read it, but as you said he is overprotective.

The combined total of all that, assuming (s)he wants only two games for each system, a single pair of pants and a single shirt, would be over $300. >_>

If I were you TC I would have tried to make the brat cry.

1 way would be to go up and snatch all the copies of the book and walk away so she cant have one.

2 if you read the book or some how knew spoilers yell them out around her

3 this is the most risky way to handle the situation so make sure no one sees your face. Take a thick book(the last Harry Potter comes to mind) and just throw it at her head(make sure to hit your target) and run like your about to be eaten by a starving lion.

Patience is a virtue -- I'm with socked feet on this one. The parents are as ill-tempered as the children were bratty -- someone let them get to that point and it sure as hell wasn't me.

Babies having babies! That's what this is about! So very very sad!

Its not even that the father should read the back cover but that he doesnt trust his daughter to read suitable books. The world is full of books at the father will never be able to read them all so his limiting his daughter which will jsut make her rebel from her father. this may sound silly over a book but thats how it starts and then the mistrust within the relationship will start to grow. The father was being unreasonable i mean at 16 years of age someone should be able to read what they want.

I definitely agree - it was a book and the parents were obviously the ones who were wrong in these stories. The parents were the ones being unreasonable in my opinion - it's a ****ing book and I would be pissed if my parents were like that.

kids wanna start reading now, and parents say no? wtf?

wasnt there a lot of whining going around that kids dont read enough? what happened to that?

Theokhoth

Kids want to read =/= kids are entitled to every book they want.

I still dont understand. It's not like buying books is bad.

Sounds like my cousin. I stopped whining about not getting things when I was 7. When I was in Florida, my cousin (who is 13) asked my grandmother for a wrestling DVD (we were in Florida to see Wrestlemania). My grandmother said no because she had no money which is understandable. He proceeds to scream (keep in mind that he is 13) and walk around the store ignoring my grandmother (who isn't the youngest person). She is walking around the store trying to calm him down while he is throwing a fit. I (I'm also 13) was just shaking my head laughing. He should be greatful enough that he is in Florida going to the show. The whole time I was thinking why he needed a wrestling DVD when he was going to see the show in a few days.

1. Depends on the book.

2. Depends on the person getting the book (buying anything for brats is bad).

3. Depends on how much money you have.

4. Depends on whether or not you have the book and plan to give it as a gift.

Not all books are appropriate for minors. Ever read a child called it, clock work orange...I mean there are some books I wouldnt want my kid to read until I felt they were at the right age. The father is totally justified in saying no and telling her he needs to read it first.

[QUOTE="cheeselover"]Sounds like the kids were being reasonable. For God's sake, it is a book that they are asking for. Why is a girl not allowed to read something because her father hasn't read it? And why even tell the kid like that that you got them a present? Just tell them that you'll get it for them some other time. Sounds like the parents were the morons hereabdelmessih101
I definitely agree - it was a book and the parents were obviously the ones who were wrong in these stories. The parents were the ones being unreasonable in my opinion - it's a ****ing book and I would be pissed if my parents were like that.

If it's just a ****ing book then the kids shouldn't be throwing temper tantrums for it.

I agree and I have to add, if shes not mature enough to accept no as an answer shes probably not mature enough to read and understand the book in the first place

4. Depends on whether or not you have the book and plan to give it as a gift.

1. I dont see the kids you mentioned buying bad books. the 1st kid said he had all in the series but that one.

2. maybe it'll make the kid less a brat? dunno. Besides, the 2nd parent was already gonna buy a book for the child.

3. Looks like they were gonna buy a book if they were at the section.

4. then awnser with a "maybe santa'll get it for ya":P. I dunno.

Yeah. I agree. Most kids nowadays won't go near books. Their parents should be eager to buy their kids books. And the parents are stupid if they don't let their kids read books they haven't already read yet. How are the kids suppose to learn anything in life or be exposed to certain things if they're parents witnessed everything first and then shelter their children from it because they don't it. Seriously, parents need to lighten up.

but ofcourse you could say that your statement was hypocritical, because you'll never know if you were ever 'that' baby crying at a resturant.

Gosh man, your being kind of pretentious. No matter what everyone says, you keep shutting them down. The kid was probably asking for Twilight, not some novels featuring rape scenes. Like, wtf.

I was using the other novel as an example to show why just looking at a summary will never reveal every detail of the book. Look at the back of Pillars and then read it, then come back and tell me you got all the details from the summary.

I'm not the one defending spoiled children based on the "fact" that "teens never read, therefore teens who want to read are entitled to be bought whatever books they want." :|

the problem is these kids are spoiled as hell and kick and scream until they get what they want, this isnt good the father was trying to show her she cant always get what she wants. Maybe the dad didnt have the money for it. Or maybe hes never read twilight and doesnt know what to expect, he was totally justified with his actions as a father. However both parents need to teach there kids a lesson or two in manners you dont behave like that...shes 16? she wants it so bad she can work for it!
