[QUOTE="toast_burner"]The film is about evolution. At the start the monkeys find the monolith and learn to use tools. In the future humans use their tools to do everything for them so that they are no longer evolving, but instead their tools are evolving. The next step of evolution would be to adapt to not need tools, to be able to live in space naturally. HAL knows that he will become obsolete and trys to kill the crew before they replace him.
The scene at the end in the room represents the death and birth of new live. The man ages and dies and from him comes the star child.

Why would not needing tools be the next step in evolution? That would just be a step back.
Yes and how did that add anything?
Didn't you notice that throughout the film they were drinking trough straws and reading instructions on how to use toilets? In space men are as helpless as babies, machines are our parents. When you gropw up you learn to live without your parents. The starchild can breath and move through space without any aid, how is that a step back?
Besides if you get rid of HAL, what have you got? A bunch of monkeys and a artifact on the moon.
Oh...makes more sense now. They never explained all this.
Still though. I'm more interest in the mysterious. Yes like the artifact on the moon. That's more interesting than a rogue AI.

You like the mysterious but you're complaining that they didn't spoon feed the story to you? Figuring out the story is half of the fun of the film. The amount of subtle hints is outstanding (e.g. HAL sings daisy bell when deactivated, the first soing ever sung by a computer). Whether you like the film or not you can't honestly say he's a bad director.

I figured out the evolution part. I just never figured out that HAL figured it out(why he faked the accident). And I hate babies so when I saw the baby I was like no not another stupid baby.
What song is daisy bell? Never heard it. I never said he was bad, just overrated. And also remember there is still the shining and dr strangelove. Bad movies.
And BTW the first half of 2001 was like the best I've ever seen. The opening scene is like the best opening scene ever. Ok I admit. It was a damn good movie. It's just the flying through colors and sitting eating chicken part of the movie could've been done better.
No, he is one of the best directors of all time. Speilberg; now there's an overated ****

Daisy bell is an old song
Dr Strangelove is a brilliant film. One of the best comedies ever.

It sure as hell ain't funny. There comes a point where admitting you are wrong is simply the only reasonable thing to do. This is one of those times, major. We will accept your apology provided you promise to not do it again.

You can't fight here, this is the war room!
You need to remeber that this was made when nuclear war was a huge issue, it's a satire about it. The government try to be profesional but always come across as rather childish (such as having casual conversations over the phone ragarding the end of the world)

That's pretty funny I guess. But The Party is a much funnier Peter Sellers movie IMO. Although it's alot of slapstick, but it's good slapstick.

It probably would have been funnier at the time due to the context, as nuclear war was a bigger issue then. But if you're able to put your self in the correct mindset and understand what its referring to (such as the missile gap) then it's still hilarious.

No lol. It doesn't come close to for example Monty Python and even much of Sasha Baron Cohen.
I understand what it's referring to. I know very very basic history you know. The cold war only ended 20 years ago.

smh, mayor. expected more.
Beethoven and now Kubrick. You're on a roll. Wrong on both counts mind, but keep doing what you're doing.

Maybe I was too young when I watched it.
Well I think expected more is always better than expected less.
Kubrick is one of the greatest directors ever. 2001 is one of my favorite movies of all time. Plus you can play Echoes over part 3 of 2001 if you are a Pink Floyd fan or a fan of awesome.
[QUOTE="charlesdarwin55"]you're a f***ing idiot.Oh yeah The Shining sucks too!
jediknight52501
get over it babe, the shining is boring tripe. not a terrible movie, but nothing close to the level of "masterpiece" praise it gets. the book blows it out the f*cking water...
... But I love A Clockwork Orange.. :( I guess I gotta hate it now because Kubrick is too mainstream
2001 is definitely overated but still a good movie portions go for far too long is probably the only problem.
I was not a fan of Full Metal Jacket, it really was not that great of a film and Platoon was a more quality film in my opinion.

Its either that or unrealistic-looking CGI that do nothing but explode
He isn't that good and my not liking his work is just compounded by how everyone else thinks he is great.
[QUOTE="KC_Hokie"]George Lucas is overrated, Agreed. He is overrated but The Shining was awesome. Spartacus was also really good.
Most overrated director is Quentin Tarantino.

No.No. You are wrong. Scorsese is far more over- rated.

To be fair 2001 is a pretty old movie and has withstood time quite well. Everything in that movie was very "out there" thinking for the times. Now it's all been done dozens of times and doesn't have the same originality when you watch it now. A lot of movies from the 60's and 70's are very dialogue heavy and alot of them have scenes that appear to be "filler" but actually subtly develop the story and the characters. Look at the movie Taxi Driver made a little under ten years after. It can be argued that majority of the film is "filler" but without it the movie wouldn't of had the same impact it does. Same goes for 2001. What some people see as boring others see as a riveting story.
