Wolf-Man2006
I actually have alot more patience for the movie version of a Clockwork Orange than the book.

The book is better than the film. Somethings seemed to be lost in the film, mostly because Kubrick based it off the American version and not the UK version, so the last scene is gone.Full Metal Jacket is the greatest war movie of all time. TonyDanzaFanI would honestly place that film under Kubrick's weakest. FMJ is miles away from being the greatest war movie of all time.
I am ashamed to still frequent this site with all I am seeing here. I don't see how 2001 is boring, but I guess it's because I go in with the fitting mindset and have enough patience and interest to absorb it all. It is a visually and thematically riveting experience and remains in my top 5. And on top of that Kubrick has made many films, several of which I adore. He is probably my second or third favourite director.

The problem is the first 30 minutes are too good to the point thats really the only reason you need to see FMJ

Yeah, basically. Saving Private Ryan was spectacular in terms of production, but I thought it wasn't challenging enough from an intellectual/moral point of view. Full Metal Jacket was quite a bit better at this, which is why I think it is much more successful as a war flick.
What about Eyes Wide Shut and A.I.?DevilMightCryKubrick didn't make A.I, he died very early in development but spielbergdedicated the film to him.
2001 - This movie wasn't good at all.
The first half is good with all the monkeys lol. But then they add HAL which occupies a large part of the movie but really doesn't add ANYTHING. Then the last part you see a bunch of colours for 20 minutes and then they're in a room for no reason. So in conclusion; first half=good and beautiful but second part pointless.
Dr. Strangelove - Is this suppose to be a comedy? wtf???
Clockwork Orange - Haven't actually seen this one but I heard some people say it sucks.

As a director...yea he is. He's more of a writer than director. KC_HokieHas he written anything good? Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Willow, THX-1138 and American Graffiti.
He wrote Ep 4 only, and he didn't write a single Indiana Jones. He's neither a very good director nor a good writer. He's good at having *ideas* but taking an idea and making a movie out of it are two very different things.

Not to mention that his drafts of A New Hope and American Graffiti were revised by more competent screenwriters. Hell, Lucas himself even admits that he's not a good writer. Not by a long shot.2001 is fantastic. A lot of people don't understand the plot but that's probably because they didn't read the novel.
Full Metal Jacket however is absolute garbage. As an anti-war film it's hilarious, as a film that's supposed to show the reality of war it's hilarious, and as an overall movie it's more of a mediocre comedy than anything. That is, after the second half. :P

George Lucas is overrated,As a director...yea he is. He's more of a writer than director. He only directed 4 of the SW films tooHe is overrated but The Shining was awesome. Spartacus was also really good.
Most overrated director is Quentin Tarantino.

The part with the monkeys was horrible, the part with HAL was really good and the part with the colors is probably they best thing that has ever been on a tv, as long as you know how to watch it, listening to Echoes by Pink Floyd helps.
People need to shut up about Full Metal Jacket. Paths of Glory > Full Metal Jacket. It is the Kubrick war film.sammyjenkis898

Are you judging from that standpoint alone? If so, you're short-sighted. Saving Private Ryan featured: better acting, an actually compelling story, better cinematography, and it was actually entertaining. The list goes on, but I think you get my point.

craps all over? let's let up on the hyperbole please. jesus, this place is flooded with it...BreakingDeath

I beg to differ on the 'better acting' part, by the way.
In the end, I always focus on how the subject of war is presented. This doesn't mean that I don't appreciate great acting and 'a compelling story' in the sense of it being more focused and linear (although Hollywood stories often fail to compell after you've discovered the fairly simple formula behind it), but I'm just saying that I expect a director to do something a bit more sophisticated with such explosive subject matter than what a lot of titles in the genre boil down to. Now, Saving Private Ryan was by no means a bad movie, but instead consider Charlie Wilson's War. That film had some amazing acting and high production values, yet it was still terrible due to its morally infantile nature. Granted, from a cinematographic point of view it was also poor due to the lack of proper pacing, but you get the point. I think war is probably one of the most interesting historical and moral topics, but with most war films it's as if I'm watching someone's masturbatory fantasies of heroism put to screen. SPV wasn't that bad in this sense, but I am merely trying to explain why I find this aspect very important in a war film.

Nice assessment. I guess this is one of those "agree to disagree" scenarios, only because it'll never end otherwise.
Full Metal Jacket was horrible, the whole thing felt so disjointed and the character development was horrible. You can't simply switch protogonists and plots halfway through the film after none of the characters were developed well and then expect us to care.

You don't need overly dynamic characters to make a good movie.
