My dad and I hated the trailer but it seems the movie isn't that bad. In fact, critcs are loving the movie so far. It currently has 22 reviews in rotten tomatoes and they are all positive.

"Paced at warp speed with spectacular action sequences rendered brilliantly and with a cast so expert that all the familiar characters are instantly identifiable, the film gives Paramount Pictures a new lease of life on its franchise." - The Hollywood Reporter

"The result is a triumph, certain to be regarded as not just one Trek's better moments, but one of the finest films made in the sci-fi genre." - The Austrailian

"Blasting onto the screen at warp speed and remaining there for two hours, the new and improved Star Trek will transport fans to sci-fi nirvana." - Variety

At first I had my doubts about this (unknown actors, J.J. Abrams directing, and a trailer I dind't really like), but I guess I will be seeing it this weekend. Will you be seeing it this weekend? :D

I want to watch it just to satisfy my curiosity. I really liked Star Trek when I was younger and I want to see if they capture enough of the Star Trek feel or if it's just a special effects CGI bonanza. Having said that, my friends are all watching it on Friday night, but I can't go with them because I'm working. :x

I've been really anticipating the new Star Trek. It looked like Paramount spent enough to really bring the franchise into a new gen

I have a feeling some of those quotes are taken out of context. Either way, Star Trek and the word impressing shouldn't be in the same sentence.

I just read in USA Today, J.J. Abrams said he didn't watch much Star Trek. It looks like it from what I can see. Star Trek isn't and has never been about action. It's about sometime more -- it's an optimistic vision of our future, and that's what I like about it.

I think it depends on whether you were a Star Trek fan or not how you feel about the film. I never much cared for it.

I'm actually surprised by how much praise it is getting. It's off to a wonderful start on Rottentomatoes. Looks like it has beaten Wolverine in terms of a good blockbuster, and maybe it will beat Terminator Salvation and Transformers 2 too? I guess we'll find out.

We'll be seeing it Saturday, which means I have 5 days to figure out how to convince her to wear that Uhura outfit I gave her. Any suggestions?

Play the "We never go out" card. I don't know if men can use it on women and have the same effect, but you can try.

I've been a fan for nearly my whole life and I'm looking forward to this. :D I'm still kinda bummed about Enterprise though... in season 4 it finally became the show that it should have always been, then it got cut. Voyager still left a bad taste in my mouth... and hopefully the DS9 vibe that I'm feeling isn't misguided. That is still my favorite Star Trek show, period.

DS9? You just liked that plasticky guy. Obo or whatever. I liked the original and TNG better, but DS9 was pretty good. I didn't even waste my time with Enterprise.

Wow, I agree with your assessment of all things Trek-like; I recently started a complete run through of DS9 episodes on my PSP, finally having schlepped through fillers to the beginning of the Dominion stuff. Edit: Enterprise's season 4 mini-arcs were pretty novel, I thought and all surprisingly good, except of course for the series finale, contemptuously making the entire series a B-story to a middling late TNG episode.

Actually it's Odo, and I don't remember at all. I thought he was just station security. Don't remember who was where in the hierarchy of command, though.

Odo was an interesting fellow, but what I really liked was the fact that it was the ideal of the future mixed in with realism. Just because things may be better doesn't mean they're perfect, and it the show wasn't against having everything in the Federation fall apart for a while when they go to war. Plus, DS9 was one of those shows that got exponentially better as it went along... here's how I group them. 1-2: Meanwhile, somewhere other than where the Enterprise is 3-5: Sometimes, "where no one has gone before" was meant to stay that way... 6-7: And this is why

DS9 was good but that last seasons felt phoned in. Some episodes felt way disconnected from the larger story lines.

Maybe I'll have to check it [DS9] out again, I never watched it that faithfully. I just finished Babylon 5, which was a little slice of awesome, imo. This was the same time period, so it would be interesting to have a complete comparison.

Apparently Peter and the Wolf is an ancient story given to us by the Prophets. :o I think the production crew and writers of DS9 had a lot to do with why it turned out so well. When Berman and crew shifted focus to Voyager, they left the show in the hands people who were fans of both sci-fi in general as well as Star Trek, and it didn't even take itself that seriously at times, which Next Generation did a bit too much (Voyager and Enterprise waaaay too much, however). When you've got a diverse crowd of aliens and personalities, strange things are gonna happen.

The film is Star Trek by name only. This film has left only one series as Canon. I will watch it, but I doubt I will consider it Star Trek from that point onwards.

The movie looks like it will be awesome. I was skeptcal at first but the trailers and cast interviews sold me on the concept. Paramount is taking a huge risk here, but I think the payoff will be huge with the re-birth of the entire movie franchise with a younger cast capable of doing more movies. Also the younger cast will help get a younger generation of trek fans into the serries which hopefully will spawn some new TV serries. As long as they arent star trek meets The Hills.

I am a big TNG fan, but that one look like a random cgi with sex and non-stop action. While I don't care about sex, action and ton of CGI in movies, this is star trek... It might be a good movie for non-trek fan, but I dunno. I have the feeling they completly missed what made trek so interesting in the first place: strong characters with personality (Not a bunch of teen who come from stupid movies.) and a nice story.

Judging from the responses on this thread, I think they are going with a Wii-like strategy, attempting to appeal to non-fans. Pretty unsurprising, given the ever-dwindling fanbase for the series since TNG went off the air.

That won't matter at all, trust me on that. It doesn't matter if you watched every episode or not it won't apply anymore.

Star Wars and Star Trek...I never understood why people liked them so much :? All these Space shows always end up having the same tired ol' themes. The only one that I do like is Battle Star Galactica because unlike Star Wars and Star Trek, BSG has the best writers in the business, and each episode is a masterpiece. They manage to elevate the same tired old story to a new level.

That's exactly what they have done. This film will completely annoy TOS fans and most TNG fans, especially the ending.

The only one that I do like is Battle Star Galactica because unlike Star Wars and Star Trek, BSG has the best writers in the business, and each episode is a masterpiece. They manage to elevate the same tired old story to a new level.II_Seraphim_II
Battlestar Galactica was done by mostly the same people who did Star Trek: Deep Space 9, with a writer or 2 from Buffy the Vampire Slayer...

[QUOTE="lucky326"]The film is Star Trek by name only. This film has left only one series as Canon. I will watch it, but I doubt I will consider it Star Trek from that point onwards.

You can tell that just from the trailer it's far too much like one of a generic action film, it'll proberbly be this year's Transformers: a generic action film but done well

The problem is the plot of the film. They erase 40 years of Star Trek in 5 minutes.
