That's a loaded question really, here's my take since they are 1 and 2 on my all-time favorite movie list. I consider both of them as one movie.
Lord of the Rings: Written by one man over a twelve year period. He also wrote many other books (including the 12 book Histories of Middle Earth). It is a fantastic book, using as much description of a fictional world that I ever seen. He invented multiple actual languages for this world. There is no argument as to what is 'cannon' as there is in Star Wars. The greatest book ever written, arguably.
LOTR movies: I think the greatest movie ever made. I think that ther was a very small chance that when they decided to make the movies that somebody would be able to 'nail it'. Peter Jackson, WETA workshop did just that.
Star Wars: Changed the course of film more than any other movie, with LucasFilm inventing PIXAR, plus even more crazy computer stuff. Lucas' biggest weakness is characters / dialogue, in movies you need to actually show everyone so they have to be completely described; where in the books of LOTR Tolkien describes his characters very little leaving it up to the reader.
The novels, comic books, and video games add more depth to the SW universe than exists in the LOTR universe, but it took thousands, if not millions of people to create all of this, LOTR was done by one man.

Um... wow. LOTR was actually the phenomenon that started the interest in fantasy.

Can I just add to this most excellent argument that Return of the King is, I'm fairly certain of this and do correct me if I am wrong, the only Sci-Fi/Fantasy film to ever have won Best Picture at the Oscars...The original Star Wars may have been nominated, but it didn't win. Now in this day and age, that could be a different matter altogether.

Off the top of my head, I don't think and SW movies have ever been nominated, and as much as I hate movie awards shows, I have to agree all three LOTR were nominated for a combined 30 Academy Awards, winning 17.Off the top of my head, I don't think and SW movies have ever been nominated, and as much as I hate movie awards shows, I have to agree all three LOTR were nominated for a combined 30 Academy Awards, winning 17.blackngold29
Ok, I only know this because I had a discussion about this, for some reason or another, with someone the other day...Episode IV was nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars, but didn't win. Episodes V and VI were not nominated for it, but they did win best picture at the People's Choice Awards...
[QUOTE="Witchking111111"]Nothing beats the LOTR.blackngold29Your name kinda speaks for itself
Pretty much.

no... did Lucas create 3 entire languages? no.... did he create a full geneology spanning thousands of years? no... you might like star wars better, but never say it's deeper.

you do know that Lord of the Rings books was the first one?...
the lord of the rings(books) are more developed than star wars - how can you say star wars has a deeper universe?
star wars is cool but lord of the rings - I prefer high fantasy over sci-fi
Lord Of The Rings, and I would say that it's deeper, he created multiple languages just to use them in his book. There are people out there who speak freaking elvish.
Both stories are timeless, however. And I'm glad I own both. So twenty years from now I'll still be popping them out for a watch every now on then.
Getting back to the awards thing SW: Episode IV won 7 academy awards, I didn't know that. ESB won 3 and ROTJ won 0.
FOTR: 4, TTT: 2, ROTK: 11/11. 11 wins out of 11 nominations is pretty amazing in my book.
Fix your avatar then. Star Trek is for geeks.I'm not a big Lord of the Rings fan... I never have been.
However, I LOVE Star Wars.

I'm going with Star Wars 1-3 > Lord of the Rings > Star Wars 4-6. It's really close between the SW prequels and Lord of the Rings though. Ewan McGreggor's Obi Wan is one of my favourite casting choices for any character. He really helped it out.

you liked the phantom menace?
It's my favourite one! Challenging my above edited statement, Liam Neeson is my favourite jedi ever. Besides child Anakin and Jarjar I thought it was fantastic! Please Log In to post.
