all the same I'm sure no American soldier served not to hear America the Beautiful in another language

I'm confused.

How many American soldiers serve their countries, so that they CAN hear "America the Beautiful".
While I'm not saying they're not allowed to believe their country is beautiful; One doesn't have to join the military to hear "America the Beautiful". So it seems rather silly to suggest that the soldiers reasoning was that they joined the army so they could hear "America the Beautiful" being sung in english.

I'd also like to point out there was some outrage about there being a gay couple in that Ad.

Despite the fact that Katharine Lee Bates (The woman who wrote, and originally sung, "America the Beautiful" ), was a lesbian.

The sad fact in this country today is you are not allowed to be offended by anything unless you are homosexual or a minority.

and what are those reasons?

People getting offended is absurd. The intent of the commercial is to say how great the diversity is here, yet people are taking it in a different way. The same thing as the Washington Redskins controversy.

the hell? Be offended all you want! What law or policy is preventing you from being offended? Or does "offended" mean "insecurity resulting from a diminishing sense of superiority"?

Logically we should have English as the official language. Can you imagine a Police Officer yelling at you in a different language? Or some broadcast of important information in a train or bus terminal being in a different language? Standardization, in this regard, is a good thing.

This is so absurd on so many levels and typical of how your type debates. I never had a sense of superiority so your premise is flawed from the get-go.

I am not going to state mine again, I already did so earlier in the thread. In the end it matters not, GS-OT is about as liberal as it gets, and we all know how liberals "debate" things.....they don't. Just call me a xenophobe and get it over with, don't act like you care where I am coming from, it insults my intelligence.

“In the first place, we should insist that if the immigrant who comes here in good faith becomes an American and assimilates himself to us, he shall be treated on an exact equality with everyone else, for it is an outrage to discriminate against any such man because of creed, or birthplace, or origin. But this is predicated upon the person's becoming in every facet an American, and nothing but an American...There can be no divided allegiance here. Any man who says he is an American, but something else also, isn't an American at all. We have room for but one flag, the American flag... We have room for but one language here, and that is the English language... and we have room for but one sole loyalty and that is a loyalty to the American people.”

Theodore Roosevelt

from the get-go I asked how non-minorities are not allowed to be offended, which you did not answer.

Show us the responses with rational explanations behind why they were offended by this ad, and perhaps I'll reconsider my reaction to their apparent xenophobia.

It is not my fault you took my "not allowed" comment in the literal sense, you know damn well what I mean so let's stop with the games. Not allowed to be offended as in it is not socially accepted these days. Christians are "not allowed" to be offended by something, but homosexuals are. But of course that makes me a homophobe just speaking of it to you I am sure.

Sigh......I made a very rational response as to why even pro-immigration people may be offended, I can say that because I am one of them. I don't even know if offended is the right word to use, actually. You dig for my post in this thread, I already posted it, not my fault you skipped over it.

bullshit. Christians are the most easily offended people on the planet. They get offended when you ignore them. Not wanting to lend an ear to philosophical pretenses. "not listening" doesn't mean "not allowed".

There is little grounds to be offended by homosexuality in a culture, beyond doctrine or dogma, which is why people shake their heads at those particular Christians who are.

I remember my dad commenting on that commercial when it first aired. He was saying how it was implying that America belongs to everybody, and how thats not entirely a good thing.

I however, think the commercial is very well made and sheds a positive outlook.

@vfibsux: what case. If that's not being allowed to be offended then gays and minorities aren't allowed to either.

Anytime you get people being offended, others will question whether or not they are being too sensitive.

Certain Muricans have an issue with other languages, apparently. Quite sad.
