http://www.nytimes.com/2012/04/03/us/justices-approve-strip-searches-for-any-offense.html?_r=1&smid=tw-nytimes&seid=auto

WASHINGTON — The Supreme Court on Monday ruled by a 5-to-4 vote that officials may strip-search people arrested for any offense, however minor, before admitting them to jails even if the officials have no reason to suspect the presence of contraband.

Uh.
What.

The case behind this ruling was a man who was strip searched because he failed to pay a traffic fine. Apparently this is okay...?

Ditto. I thought that was common, but I believe this is pertaining to "OK, I stop Mr. Pirate for not using his turning signal, Cop: Drop em".

But the article says be for when you're going to jail. Not for routine stops. Regardless, I highly doubt any cop wants to strop search you for no reason.

I really don't see a problem with it to be honest. Like the article says it was someone in custody and policy is that all those in custody get searched. If it had been the other way around and this guy was shanked by someone who smuggled something in through a body cavity I am sure if he survived he would have been following through with a lawsuit right now saying the corrections department should have searched inmates for weapons.

Well now is the time for the government to reap what they sow. Unfortunately they hold the power and resistance would be futile, faceless martyrs will offer themselves as blood sacrifices in order to spur a wider protest such as I if needed. The best way to fight this sort of intrusion on our liberty though is not protest in the public with signs rather through word of mouth and contacting the officials responsible. Make sure those who supported this legislation do not get reelected. This is the same situation as SOPA/PIPA, get rid of the legislators who put forth the bills because for every bill we protest down more will come up in prettier packages that sound like they are helping us. We can not defeat corporations but we can cut out the middleman that they use to strip us of our liberties by letting them know that we are informed citizens and will not lie down as we are robbed of our freedom.

Interestingly enough, the article said nothing about making exceptions for minors submitted to juvenile detention facilities.

Exactly. A lot of people don't seem to realize this is after you've been arested and before they put your butt in a holding cell.

And also before you're convicted of anything, if I'm understanding it right.

Being convicted has nothing to do with being searched before being placed in a cell with other inmates...

It makes sense to me though. What if the person has a pocket knife or a lighter on them? That can be dangerous to the other inmates.

So inmates should be held in correctional facilities without being thoroughly searched? No, that is silly. It is the responsibility of such facilities to insure the safety of staff and, most importantly, inmates. Not searching incoming inmates for weapons or contraband puts others at risk.

I wasn't talking about inmates.
