But isn't that the student's fault for allowing them self to be distracted? Pretty much everyone has a phone, why can some live with turning it off during class and others can't?People been going through school without laptops for decades, I think the students can manage. And yes I do think laptops in classes are distracting at times and cell phones!

Thats exactly the problem some poeple are just easily distracted. Their actions ruin it for everyone else. If the teacher feels like laptops are a distraction I see no problem in them banning it. Its their class so they can do as they please. You got to remember they are there to teach not entertain it's not their falut if you get bored.

Why do you need it??? I have never seen a laptop in our school that is not school owned and we get along FINE!!! YOU DON'T NEED IT YOU WANT IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Why do I personally need it? Because often times my history professors can digest a extreme amount of information in short order that I can not write down fast enough, whilst on the laptop I can type it far faster.. Not to mention I can interject links to sources of more readings, maps/pictures they use that I can find on the internet and more things.. The point being is I paid for this.. That isn't THEIR class, its the colleges, colleges WE paid for.. As long as the laptop isn't serving as a distraction to any one else but the owner, there should be no reason why do ban it.. Because guess what if they are distracted, they will get a poor grade.. Thats reasons enough not to get distracted.

... This is no more bothering the professor then staring at a wall or a paper.. I suppose we should start banning that too? Teachers are paid to educate, the laptop is not effecting any ones experience negatively if its being used responsibly.. And if that person who is using the laptop is distracted.. Guess what.. Who cares? They are paying for it, and wasting their own money in the process.. College students are grown adults, not a bunch of little kids.
People can survive with out them. I know at my niece's school they are a huge distraction (I see her on Facebook all the time).
daqua_99
Guess what thats her own decision, if she can't be responsible with it.. Then she gets a poor grade.. Perfectly simple here.. The professors job is to teach, not to make every one pay attention.. You can not show up to the class what so ever and the average professor won't care.

Certain things bothers certain people and obviously laptops bother some proffesors. Yeah college students are grown adults so maybe they should just suck it up and use a pen and paper like the good old days. The laptop is a great tool to use for education purposes I will agree with that. I have one for that purpose. But honestly its not that big of a deal if I can't use it in class.
Zomg, having to take notes with our HANDS?! What is this draconian cruelty?!?D_Battery
It does get draconian for me when I have to take indepth notes for close to 4 hours straight... One hour classes are fine, but I just can't see my self being able to function well with my one class for that long with the amount of notes I have to take, my hands begins to physically hurt tremendously.

There is nothing good about the "good old days".. Education is superior now.. In some classes for some people writing just doesnt cut it with which the speed the professor is going, and most refuse to be recorded on tape.. I fail to see how the majority of the students should be punished for the few people who get distracted.. Guess what thats THEIR choice and THEY paid for it... If the professor doesn't like it they can flunk them.

I assume you have complete silient keyboard? Where do you get that?
.... I am not sure what your talking about.. Either you have super hearing, or you have been around people with laptops from the 1990s.. The new ones are quite silent..

She's in year 9. Give anyone a laptop at the age of 14 and they will muck around on it. I'm not talking about someone in university (I know they wouldn't care) but someone still in High School needs discipline. It is a teacher's job to teach, and distracting technology only makes their jobs harder

Then, you have never being into a seminar when 100 students are rigurously typing on their laptop in a enclosed conference room.I have never seen any where near those many laptops on a large seminar class like that.. Ever.. And the article was about how the owners are distracted, not that its making a huge distrubance in the class room.
[QUOTE="kidsmelly"]But isn't that the student's fault for allowing them self to be distracted? Pretty much everyone has a phone, why can some live with turning it off during class and others can't? well I don't take paper to class anymore because I use my laptop to take all my notes on. Although I'm majoring in computer networking so I'm a fairly biased source. I could see banning laptops from being used, but I don't think it would be appropriate to ban them from being in a class at the college level, some people use these for academic purposes and where would they put it if they don't bring it to class (I commute so I bring all my school supplies to class in my bag, though I don't have a laptop, plus the college has computers).
Oh yes, teachers definitely need to be competing with youtube, games and porn for students' attention.Seems pretty dumb to me, teachers are blaming laptops for distracting students. Maybe it's because their lessons aren't interesting?

I write extremely slowly (I have some sort of output problem, I don't remember what it is called ) so I have to use a laptop just to keep up.
good, school is a place to learn; when you're at school with a laptop I think it becomes hard to focus, don't you think?
banning from school is a bad idea, banning during class is fine.Seems pretty dumb to me, teachers are blaming laptops for distracting students. Maybe it's because their lessons aren't interesting?More here

Why aren't you on a date with her right now?I saw the hottest thing today. A blonde girl in my critical science research methods class playing World of Warcraft. She was raiding while asking the prof a question.
