laptops, psp, cellphones are banned from my school... makes me think I'm in prison.Seems pretty dumb to me, teachers are blaming laptops for distracting students. Maybe it's because their lessons aren't interesting?More here
Anyone encounter this at your school? Your thoughts?

I'm all for it. Students in my classes abuse their rights by going on Facebook, Myspace, and Youtube during class. This is distracting for people sitting around them so yeah ban them from class. Some of my teachers already tell you not to bring laptops in their class.
I actually agree with this. We have computers in my College English class and most people are on the internet the entire time.
I also hate that we HAVE to type papers for school, it seems like my computer or printer has problems every time one is due.
I hate it when teachers make us write papers by hand, the computer being "broken" shouldn't be a problem at all, although printing it out can be annoying.I actually agree with this. We have computers in my College English class and most people are on the internet the entire time.

[QUOTE="Serraph105"][QUOTE="blackngold29"] They aren't. Why should they care if you pay attention? You paid, they're getting paid, what difference does it make if you waste your money or not?Ragnarok1051because it looks good to do your job well. Also where I go to college they always have an end of semester teacher evaluation where the students can anonymously ream a teacher if they feel that they paid for a crappy job. I hate those things. I'm glad that they're turning to online surveys so we don't have to waste time doing them in class. yeah I don't really like doing them either, but in the past I have had a couple of bad teachers and I have had a paper typed up before I got into class to turn in along with them.
Laptops are a great tool for learning. Teachers should suck it up and get over it. Unless you're talking about high school. I don't care what happens in high school.TauruslinkIf they're used properly like as a part of the class, but mostly students just bring there's in to surf the web and chat on facebook. This distracts students around them so I don't like laptops in the classroom.

And I like reading other peoples' facebooks. Agree to disagree.

But that just proves my point that it distracts those around them. Teachers don't get a job to teach children to only end up talking to walls. They actually want their students to pay attention to them.I don't see how you'd need laptops in schools, anyway. Cell phones can be used as calculators, but that doesn't mean people will use them for that purpose. Same goes for laptops. If it wasn't that big of a problem, chances are that they wouldn't need to ban them.Seems pretty dumb to me, teachers are blaming laptops for distracting students. Maybe their friend just explained a particularly confusing segment of the lecture that the teacher didn't have time to explain because they were too busy banning laptops! Didn't think of that, did you?

I'm sorry but if you want to waste your time and money by watching people update their status on Facebook that's fine, but some of us wish to use our time and money wisely.Do what my church history professor did: if you get caught doing anything on your laptop outside of taking notes you fail the class without warning, and if you were the person who told on the student then you make an A. I loved this guy. :PmindstormHe sounds cool . I got my laptop back today after a month and a half. Also should be home Friday night for the week so yeah.

My absence of productivity is causing my sanity to leave me. You're presence tends to do a good job at making me forget things like progress, productivity, hard work, etc. and thus we must hang out. :P

We'll have a jolly good time. :o

As they should be, in lectures at least. Most of my profs have banned them, and good thing too, because in the lectures that they are allowed, people just check facebook and annoy the hell out of everyone else while they play online poker or some other useless stuff. Makes me wonder why they bother showing up.
For high school, I think laptops shouldn't be allowed, since you really want to drill knowledge into their heads. At college, if they want to goof around in class, let them, since it's their choice to be there.
the rule is fine by me.
I never needed my laptop in class before, and shouldn't need one ever in class.
I take notes on my laptop all the time. It's only a distraction if you're playing games or on messenger, but you're only hurting yourself.
My teachers encourage it.xTheExploitedSo do ours. Im in uni though where it is a more mature environment than a school though.

People can survive with out them. I know at my niece's school they are a huge distraction (I see her on Facebook all the time).

Guess what thats her own decision, if she can't be responsible with it.. Then she gets a poor grade.. Perfectly simple here.. The professors job is to teach, not to make every one pay attention.. You can not show up to the class what so ever and the average professor won't care.
for college proffessors i agree. at that stage it's up to the student. for HS and below the teachers are indeed held responsible for how well students do. so that's a different story. also the students are less mature at that point.i can see it happening and yes they can be a distraction which is why i dont take my laptop
i prefer good ole pencil/pen and paper when it comes to notes
Seems pretty dumb to me, teachers are blaming laptops for distracting students.
Well I'm a student and I think that they have right. I know that if I have a laptop at school, I wouldn't listen to the teacher at all.
They have point here, I support 'em. The kids must know how hand write, not just press buttons.
This isn't in penmanship class. I don't understand how it's not the student's fault for letting themself become distracted, the laptop doesn't do anything, the student is the one pushing the buttons!Well I'm a student and I think that they have right. Kids that age aren't responsible or smart enough a lot of times to know when to and when not to push the buttons. If they were, there wouldn't be any need for scheduled classes or truant officers. Just let the students do whatever they want and see how many would show up for school.blackngold29
