I could understand banning them from High School but not in college, they should be able to manage themselves, if doesn't distract the whole class I say who cares, the only one they're hurting is themselves.

Well I can see why they are doing it. Some students just browse the web and play poker on it. I dunno, I feel like class should be used for class; why browse the internet when you can do it at home or right after class?

Anyone encounter this at your school? Your thoughts?

I'm all for it. Students in my classes abuse their rights by going on Facebook, Myspace, and Youtube during class. This is distracting for people sitting around them so yeah ban them from class. Some of my teachers already tell you not to bring laptops in their class.

I actually agree with this. We have computers in my College English class and most people are on the internet the entire time.

I also hate that we HAVE to type papers for school, it seems like my computer or printer has problems every time one is due.

I would have a hell of a time using a laptop in any of my classes. Writing down all the formulas and diagrams would be painstaking. PS2_ROCKS
Laptops are great to use for notes in every subject except math, which is much easier to take by hand.

[QUOTE="blackngold29"][QUOTE="xaos"][QUOTE="Serraph105"] maybe not, but in my experience a boring teacher is never effective as an interesting one.

No, but neither should teachers be expected to be entertainers.

They aren't. Why should they care if you pay attention? You paid, they're getting paid, what difference does it make if you waste your money or not?

because it looks good to do your job well. Also where I go to college they always have an end of semester teacher evaluation where the students can anonymously ream a teacher if they feel that they paid for a crappy job.

I hate it when teachers make us write papers by hand, the computer being "broken" shouldn't be a problem at all, although printing it out can be annoying.

yeah I don't really like doing them either, but in the past I have had a couple of bad teachers and I have had a paper typed up before I got into class to turn in along with them.

I've only had to give two bad ones before. I actually had one of my favorite teachers want me to be in class that day so he could get a good review. He's one of the oldest teachers on campus and the younger ones are claiming he's too "old". Those youngsters need to hush if they know whats good for them. :P

Laptops are a great tool for learning. Teachers should suck it up and get over it. Unless you're talking about high school. I don't care what happens in high school.

I definitely agree, anytime a laptop is used in any of my classes, the person most definitely isn't paying attention, and is usually distracting at least a couple other people, especially if they don't sit at the back. I guess this school just want's to encourage their students to actually learn instead of sitting on Facebook all class.

If they're used properly like as a part of the class, but mostly students just bring there's in to surf the web and chat on facebook. This distracts students around them so I don't like laptops in the classroom.

But that just proves my point that it distracts those around them. Teachers don't get a job to teach children to only end up talking to walls. They actually want their students to pay attention to them.

I don't see how you'd need laptops in schools, anyway. Cell phones can be used as calculators, but that doesn't mean people will use them for that purpose. Same goes for laptops. If it wasn't that big of a problem, chances are that they wouldn't need to ban them.

Maybe their friend just explained a particularly confusing segment of the lecture that the teacher didn't have time to explain because they were too busy banning laptops! Didn't think of that, did you?

Do what my church history professor did: if you get caught doing anything on your laptop outside of taking notes you fail the class without warning, and if you were the person who told on the student then you make an A. I loved this guy. :P

I'm sorry but if you want to waste your time and money by watching people update their status on Facebook that's fine, but some of us wish to use our time and money wisely.

I had better see you then. My absence of productivity is causing my sanity to leave me. You're presence tends to do a good job at making me forget things like progress, productivity, hard work, etc. and thus we must hang out. :P

As they should be, in lectures at least. Most of my profs have banned them, and good thing too, because in the lectures that they are allowed, people just check facebook and annoy the hell out of everyone else while they play online poker or some other useless stuff. Makes me wonder why they bother showing up.

For high school, I think laptops shouldn't be allowed, since you really want to drill knowledge into their heads. At college, if they want to goof around in class, let them, since it's their choice to be there.

I can see that. I'd bring mine every now and then in my grade 12 year and if the class was boring, I'd do something else. I had the password to the schools internet, and the amount of shows I just had downloaded...well..kept me entertained. On the other hand in some classes it was much easier to take notes/finish projects quickly because I never had to transfer written notes to my laptop at home. Classes like bio though, all pen, and colors and diagrams...necessary. University though, I used it all the time. I took notes and used the built in mic to record the lectures without teachers knowing.

I take notes on my laptop all the time. It's only a distraction if you're playing games or on messenger, but you're only hurting yourself.

eh.. if you're in college and you're distracted by a laptop on your desk when you should be paying attention you seem to be missing the point of college.. no one is forcing you to attend.

[QUOTE="daqua_99"]

People can survive with out them. I know at my niece's school they are a huge distraction (I see her on Facebook all the time).

sSubZerOo

Guess what thats her own decision, if she can't be responsible with it.. Then she gets a poor grade.. Perfectly simple here.. The professors job is to teach, not to make every one pay attention.. You can not show up to the class what so ever and the average professor won't care.

for college proffessors i agree. at that stage it's up to the student. for HS and below the teachers are indeed held responsible for how well students do. so that's a different story. also the students are less mature at that point.

in most of my lectures the professor would allow students to place their recorders in the front. but that was like 10 years ago. still, no one was keeping it a secret and i didn't see any teachers object. heck for some of the big lectures it would be recorded and shown on campus tv.

I'm tempted to say "oh look a bird" and leave it at that. But... well let's face it, put a laptop infront of some kids all their going to do is game or tweet etc. While I do think teachers should make an effort for their lesson plans to be engaging I don't think they can compete with kids wanting to tweet their twitter dee doos off all day long. Edit: I'm not sure whether your talking about highschool or college. I assumed highschool because of your wording so my response is aimed at highschool aged students. Uni might be a little differen't considering a lot of the students WANT to be there and pass because they are shelling out money.

Seems pretty dumb to me, teachers are blaming laptops for distracting students.

Well I'm a student and I think that they have right. I know that if I have a laptop at school, I wouldn't listen to the teacher at all.

They have point here, I support 'em. The kids must know how hand write, not just press buttons.

This isn't in penmanship class. I don't understand how it's not the student's fault for letting themself become distracted, the laptop doesn't do anything, the student is the one pushing the buttons!

Schools and ultimately teacher are paid based on how well their students do. Kids that age aren't responsible or smart enough a lot of times to know when to and when not to push the buttons. If they were, there wouldn't be any need for scheduled classes or truant officers. Just let the students do whatever they want and see how many would show up for school.
