@Motokid6: it's still a sketchy ass build. A little common sense could tell you it has harmful potential. If it looked like a basic clock is one thing, but this didn't.

All this is is a simple lack of mechanical knowledge. If the school officials were properly educated they would've been able to determine it was nothing threatening without calling the police.

Fucking paper pushers need to pick up a screw driver every once in awhile. I completely blame our shit education system. All kids should be forced to take a basic mechanical engineering class.

For instance an outlet in a wall. If you don't know how to change one then your missing essential skills all human beings this day and age should have.

If you think something may be a bomb the last thing you want to do is play with it.

What the Christ?

So you think that if someone thinks something could be a bomb they should DISMANTLE IT THEMSELVES to see if it is in fact, a bomb.

What?

@Motokid6: in their defense tho, it's not the teachers place to make that call. May be handcuffs were too much, but protocol might have called for it. But police being involved was appropriate.

I don't think anyone thought it was a bomb, just possibly a component of a bomb, and it does look the part.

@Maroxad: Your damn right. The world is in desperate need of scientists and engineers of all types who can dream big. But no. Everyone wants to be a bullshit athlete or entertainer and contribute nothing to society. Idiocracy here we come.

Indeed :)

When I was going to college, I had a difficult time choosing whether to be a scientist or engineer for this very reason (I have also been very interested in the sciences since I was 10 and mathematics since I was 5). I ended up majoring in engineering, hoping to use computer science to better the world.

So are clocks on bombs.

seriously.. if you were going to build a bomb that ran on a timer, you don't make the timer visible to the person working frantically to disarm it

Only showing ignorance really....

I'll admit the clock looks suspicious at a glance... but as soon as he says "it's a clock" and you take more than, I dunno, one second and look at the thing it's pretty obvious that it's just a fucking clock.

You can really tell who majored in liberal arts and who majored in STEM by their responses towards how the clock looks.

Seriously, how ignorant can one be? Were there no science teachers to tell them that this was merely a circuit board in a big empty box, plugged into a power cord?

So has he been released or are they gonna charge him with " making a fake bomb" to cover up that they refused to believe him that it was a clock?

I mean, I realize it may be a rethorical question given it's Texas and thus likely he'll be tried as an adult and sentenced to prison for X-amount of years, But still kinda curious.

i'm not assuming that. it's the idiots who see wires and a digital display and think it's a bomb even after being told what it is who are making assumptions.

ooh look. it's got buttons and wires and 7 segment displays. it sure is "suspicious"

@comp_atkins: you very much are assuming that. Using timers and clocks aren't for display. They run the wire that triggers the alarm speaker, when the alarm goes off it sends an electric charge to the bomb.

It looks much like a bomb component. Just because he says it's a clock doesn't make it any less suspicious looking.

To those who are excusing the paranoia and zero tolerance idiocy conspicuously at play in this incident, how do you excuse the policemen's conduct who handled a minor like an ISIS warlord? Five policemen interrogating him? Opting for the threadbare interrogation ruse of "why did you do it scum"? Are you out of your minds?

I built more elaborate things when I was 9, and guess what? I didn't hide them in a briefcase to look like a bomb and then was too stupid to understand why I was in trouble.

I'm shocked you're actually defending someone building a clock that looks like a briefcase bomb.

Just stupid enough to think a clock looks like a bomb right? ;)

@SOedipus: they did. It's obvious they didn't think it was an actual bomb or else people would've been evacuated.

It's looks like a bomb component or a hoax bomb. He could slap some putty in the bottom there or any sort of small packaging and fool anyone at first (would you really test someone claiming to have a bomb?)

The same people crying about this are the same ones who would be crying that they didn't check him good enough if he had done something bad. They just need to bitch about something.

that's a shame and all but come on.

can you really sit there and say building a clock is not some weird ass shit?

the last time i looked outside it was not 1890.

and who exactly was the kid at your school that was into shit like that whenever you went to school?

oh yeah, the quiet loner...who was socially awkward...and had no friends...and was constantly bullied....and the girls made fun of...and who has every motivation in the world to go batshit nutty.

the point I was making is that you can build a bomb that has clock / timers without the actual display. it is not needed to make a functioning device.

just curious, how does one define "suspicious looking" is that code for "has wires and looks confusing to me" ?

@comp_atkins: doesn't matter if you can or not. That's irrelevant. And really would boil down to the bomb maker decision.

Asking me how to define suspicious looking sort of seems like you are just arguing for the hell of it, but I'll bite.

Looking just like a fucking brief case bomb makes it suspicious looking. Of all the ways you can build a clock, you decide to build one that looks like a bomb component.

i edited my post with more info but shitspot didn't save it so i'll add it here.

again what exactly does "looks like a bomb component mean?" should we arrest the HP repair guy for bringing a printer toner cartridge to work? after all they look like bomb components now since people have built bombs in toner cartridges before.

the point everyone seems to be missing is even after he showed people what it was, how it worked, , opened it up etc... they STILL went all swat on him.

here's an example. if you brought this to school with it closed people may legitimately think it's a switchblade because it looks like a switchblade. as soon as you open the thing up and show a teacher it's a comb, would you expect the teacher to still call the cops and have you hauled off in handcuffs?

I'd rather they err on the side of caution than have a school blown up. But hey.....maybe that's just me. Had it been a bomb and the school did nothing you'd be screaming about that.
