I doubt anything can prepare a person for that type situation, but someone with experience and training is more likely to handle this situation better than someone without it.

PBSnipes

But that's exactly my point -- the people who *do* have the experience and training are the police, not people who have earned a CWP.

lol u must of never met acop that patrols a campus, they are the lowest of low on the police force totem poll.

i wish they had done this before my wife graduated, she went to UNT andthere were alot of women getting picked up and being raped. this would of stopped that very quick. see what all you libs dont realize is that if someone wants to pull a gun and shoot everyone they are gunna bring a gun regardless of the law. gun laws only effect law abidding citizens.theone86

I'm glad you mentioned the crimes like rape being committed. People automatically assume this is solely to prevent a massive school shooting. Students are robbed on campus all the time, and as you said women are sexually assaulted as well. This law will help to prevent this from happening. Pleny of girls stay at the library until late at night and then have to walk to their dorm or bus stop leaving vulnerable to deviants looking to get into trouble. Now they can protect theirselves. At UT we get safety alert emails detailing every incident, and most of them happended at night and the victim was female.

Beause hiring extra security or getting the local police to step up patrols isn't an option, right?

So everybody has a personal police body guard? Yeah, very pratical....

As a Texan living on a college campus, I must say that I feel a whole lot less safe than the lawmakers intended me to feel.

crazboy84

then go get a license and make yourself feel safe.

Exactly. I had to pass a written and practical test to get my permit, including education on gun laws. THEN the FBI, TBI (state level), and local police did background checks over the course of three months before my permit was issued. I'm guessing something much similar goes on in Texas.

I guess the issue here is what you consider experience. I'm talking about people with a cwp and who have been around guns their whole lives and not just police. People who have been around guns their whole life know the dangers and the responsibilty that comes along with them.

The bad guys andlunatics are going to be carring guns and shooting people anyway, at least now the good guys will be able to lawfully protect themselves.

Your point? They still have significantly more training than is required to obtain a CWP.

Apparently not if it is still happening. It's not like these crimes just started occurring in recent times. UT has their own police force and plenty of security, but things like this still happen.

Well, maybe it needs to be a larger force. Besides, just saying crime happens does nothing. Guess what, people get raped in cities too, and murdered. Things like that do happen and it's up to the police to do their best to curb them from happening, nothing is ever going to make it go away permanently.

By the way, a decent majority of rapes occur in an area where the victim feels safe and are perpatrated by someone the victim knows well.

That's not what I'm saying at all, but statistics do show that keeping a larger ratio of police officers does deter crime. If there is an increased presence, crimes are less likely to occur.

Guess what? You can also carry guns in cities in Texas too so why not on campus. You put too much faith in the police. Also it requires money to increase the force and many would rather spend it else where.

Edit: I'm focused more on sexual assaults rather than rape. For instance girl walking around campus at night and some guy confronts her and tries to feel her up. It happened several times just this past semester.

I don't know, this law just seems kind of pointless. It may prevent some schoool shootings, but may also help cause some more. And it's not like every person is going to be carrying a gun, anyway, so there could still very well be many rapings, or theft, and many defenseless people in a school shooting that could very well get shot if a licensed person with a gun doesn;t reach the scene soon enough.

This law is basically solving the problem of there being guns in school, by allowing there to be guns in school. I just do't see this law making much of a difference, really.

The problem isn't guns in school, it's the people who use guns. It's illegal in most places to carry a gun on your person without a permit, and like I said earlier in this thread, you have to go through a lot of background checks, tests, classes, AND a demonstration of proficiency in order to get the permit. These "no guns on school grounds" laws are only punishing people who have permits, not those who shouldn't be carrying regardless.
