I do think they are overrated in general but John Lennon in particular was. I'll concede Paul McCartney really does have a knack for writing catchy tunes despite not always being particularly deep or meaningful, but Lennon wrote a lot of really crappy songs that didn't go anywhere. (George Harrison is just plain awesome, not going to bash him)

A lot of John Lennon songs were about his jealousy for former lovers. Including him wanting them dead

Not exactly the same, but Clapton liked to sing about other people's wives.

George Harrison's for the tie in to the thread.....>__>

I probably would've liked them if I lived in the 60's, but music nowadays is completely different. Most of The Beatles are dead, but all of their music is dead.

No, too simple for my taste.cyberdarkkid
Not all songs were simple, Lucy in the Sky has switches from Compound meter to 4/4 time from verse to chorus, and also has multiple key changes. (verse in A, the chorus in B flat and the bridge in G) Just because they don't do cheesy ten minute guitar solo doesn't mean the music isn't complex.

Also, they're early music is still great, A Hard Days Night was a bloody masterpiece dammit. From about then until their last work they were absolutely incredible

And I will say this, they are much better than any mainstream rock band today. I wish I grew up in the age when being popular meant you had some sort of talent or originality. The Beatles had both, sure they werent the most technical band of all time but you hear their influnce in bands like Pink Floy all the way to today with Animal Collective and Of Montreal.
