[QUOTE="BMD004"]

[QUOTE="LJS9502_basic"] So when you said above no one knew....you were wrong and admit that now?LJS9502_basic

No. I'll explain this as simply as I can for you.

Nobody knew that the government was combing over EVERYBODY.

And when you bring up wiretapping... it isn't "fact" that the government wiretaps anybody they want without a warrant. Many people assume they probaby have because it's the government, and they've probably done some unethical things before.

But nobody really *knew* that they ever really did things without a warrant.

And when talking about this whole NSA spying thing, nobody knew the extent to which they have gone to comb through EVERYBODY in the country. Nobody knew that outside of the select people in the government who has worked on these programs.

If you say you knew, you are straight-up lying.

The government still isn't listening to everybody. You wear tin foil don't you?

They certainly can if they want. They have the capability. Who is to say they won't in the future? It's a slippery slope, and it is unethical for a government that is supposed to uphold freedom to do what they are doing to their own citizens.

And what is it with you talking about tin foil hats? I'm not a conspiracy theorist at all. I'm not paranoid about "big brother". I just think it is unethical for a government to do this kind of thing.

It is astounding to me how many Americans seem perfectly fine with the government running programs that snoop on everybody's phone calls and internet activity. This is the USA... not the USSR.

Of course, that requires that they have spyware running on your machine just like every other hacker. At least they're less likely to steal your credit card info.

Yeah. They're not turning this on on the average joe...this is for people under surveillance.

All it takes is one of these agents to go "Bad" and start blackmailing people under the table.

and all it takes is to set the system up under the guise of 'Teh freedomz" and it can be used for anything.  See: UK attempt to filter and block porn.  Set that system up and they can block whatever they want....political info, conflicting opinions, news leaks....

"I have nothing to hide" is the dumbest argument I've ever seen.

So can Batman, haven't you seen The Dark Knight? Anyway, in the 21st century I think we have to operate under the assumption that the government can spy on you anywhere at anytime. But, unless you're planning any terrorism, you don't have anything to worry about. Outside of that, I'm pretty positive that they couldn't prosecute you for anything they learn from bugging you unless they have a warrant.

I guess if they suspect you of something, why not?

The thing is, would this be legal in court and not invasion of privacy?

This kind of thinking blows my mind. What you said is completely beside the point.

Do people even want to live in a free country anymore? Freedom has been eroding away for years.

People seem perfectly content with the government's nose in their business.

I'm in the UK. I'm used to being watched by a security camera or twelve every time I go somewhere. Again, I couldn't really care less. I've got nothing to hide and my life isn't exactly interesting, so if they want to be boring enough to watch/listen to me pottering about doing nothing, they can go for it.

probably could, though it may or may not be harder.  Everything electronic can be hacked to some degree.  Some MIT students recently hacked a GPS in the mediterranean sea on a Yacht (with permission of course) and were able to drive the boat remotely from the US

That's a scaryt thought but it's been possible for a while

Not only the FBI I don't live in the US and while I doubt the efficency of my police system they did this a few months back to catch some politician's conversation without him knowing, a pretty big scandal here.

If they could do it it should be a walk in the park for the FBI

My impression is that the old phones, while security wasn't really in mind, could not be remotely operated as easy. How will they infect it for instance? What I really dislike about this is that they are now storing data about the common guy. When they are first doing that, going from some surveillance to a lot of surveillance is more about having enough people to work on going through the data. That is a costly step, but one step I am quite sure the government is willing to take.

Not something I enjoy but it isn't surprising either. This sort of thing is honestly something everyone should be expecting to happen in this society of ours that is becoming more and more technologically dependant. This will be far from just a US thing though.

Thankfully I have nothing to hide, but I do hope our government can keep from abusing this power....

They already have been abusing it for decades.  Anyone who thought about it and pointed out its possibility before this year was dismissed as a tin foil hatter, now with recent leaks we have actual evidence of it happening and to what extent (which is massive and global)

And something I've noticed, not specifically on this forum but just about everywhere, is that the apologists who once dismissed it as tin foil hattage now say things like "If you didn't know that was happening, you're naieve." or "It's not a big deal.... just don't do anything illegal."

Fvck you. That doesn't justify them having the capability to do it.

Ha ha ha... because the government is the only organization capable of doing it.  I don't like it, I think it can be abused, but no one has come up witha  good example of how they've abused the power.  To be honest, though I don't like some of the stuff they have done, there are a lot worse people that are doing worse things with your privacy.... and yet people like you are more outraged over the government rather than hackers that literally ruin peoples lives.

The other issue is that the community in general do nothing to out the people that abuse the systems, such as TOR, for malicous purposes such as child pornography.  As much as I hate governments using malware to collect data on people, I really don't see any other option if the community sits around with their head up their ass.  If people hate it so much then the community and society in general needs to do a better job of outing the people that are harsh abusers of public systems.

Case and point: Eric Eoin Marques, the man believed to be behind Freedom Hosting, was arrested in Ireland Thursday and is currently awaiting extradition to the U.S. on child pornography charges.  Kind of hard to argue against the capabilities when people like this are caught... this guy was solely responsible for a LARGE majority of child pornography.

my two cents.

So much more crap is now happening under Obama that it is disgusting, and he is getting a pass from the media as usual.

Actually, these programs were started under Bush, Obama is just carrying the torch... It's still not justifiable.

I'm outraged because the government is supposed to uphold the constitutional values, not trample them. I don't expect the same from hackers, but I sure as hell expect the government to act with privacy laws in mind. Pointing to single cases where child pornography rings have been busted...etc is still no excuse for the surveillance that the U.S. government is doing. It's appalling behaviour, and anyone defending the government should be ashamed of themselves.

Russ Tice breaks down WHY it affects you, and WHY the intelligence community has avoided sequesters. They have leverage on your entire political system. So yes, I think the average citizen should be **** concerned JUST a little bit moreso than I am. I don't even live in the U.S.

Exactly. People who fear monger with this crap make it sound like the FBI is listening in on everything. The government doesn't remotely consider or care about the average person's personal life. They are not going to be listening in to conversations of people who are nobody's.

Tell that to the kid who made an online joke in the game League of Legends and is now going to federal prison.

So much more crap is now happening under Obama that it is disgusting, and he is getting a pass from the media as usual.

The shit going on in the US is getting pretty damn scary. It is only going to get worse.

Actually, these programs were started under Bush, Obama is just carrying the torch... It's still not justifiable.

And a little known fact is that the 'patriot act' is written in such a way that it allows for surveillance on FOREIGN targets, not on domestic targets. They're surveilling EVERYONE and collecting/analyzing actual content of messages. It's orwellian, and it's a sign of a paranoid government who doesn't trust the civilian population.

I can careless what they do, I find it funny when everyone freaks out about this. I have nothing to hide so the FBI can watch me all they want. AbstractRadical

What if you make a simple joke and the FBI mis-understands you?  Do you want to end up in jail like that 19 year old who played League of Legends?

Here is a GREAT example:

1) A kid made a joke followed by lol/jk in a video game and is now facing life in prison

2) The DEA left a teenager locked in a cell for four days with no food or water because they forgot about him.  They tracked him with this type of internet spying stuff.

Do you even read the news?

Think before you post.

It wasn't on LoL it was on Facebook (speaking about League Of Legends).. he got released anyway someone posted a 500k bail
