George Clooney gathered a huge amount of celebrities for the "Hope for Haiti" telethon. The telethon was on more than 25 networks .

The list of stars included Denzel Washington, Brad Pitt, Muhammad Ali, Meryl Streep, Bill Clinton, Will Smith, Clint Eastwood, Leonardo DiCaprio, Wyclef, Halle Berry, Tom Hanks and many more.

And the performerswere Beyoncé, Madonna, Bruce Springsteen, Jay-Z, Jennifer Hudson, Mary J. Blige, Shakira, Coldplay, Alicia Keys, Dave Matthews, Justin Timberlake, Stevie Wonder, Rihanna, Taylor Swift, Sting, and Bono.

I know that the Telethon is over, but still please donate and help Haiti.

Not to take anything away from good deeds here but does anyone else find it a little disturbing and sad that Americans are so much more willing to help other countries out than their fellow Americans? There wasn't this kind of charity during 9/11. :?

Yes there was. The 9/11 telethon was one of the hugest telethons ever. And you have to remember that more than 20 times as many people died in the Haiti earthquakes. Btw, since I answered your question could you delete your comment since second comments tend to make or break new threads... No offense, but this message really needs to get out.

Yes, I do find it disturbing. Additionally, I don't remember other countries caring for the United States after 9/11. My guess is that everyone expects us to be able to take care of ourselves.

We have more people unemployed and trying to stay afloat here in the US than they have people in their entire country. This money should be used to to help Americans, IMHO. Just saying. Where's the telethon for hurting Americans?

There was a lot of 9.11 fund raising. Then the Red Cross decided they had enough money for 9/11.... and kept gathering money in the name of 9/11 but didn't spend the money on it and didn't bother to tell anyone.

That's fine but I'll wait for the Hurting Americans telethon from these celebrities before I donate to another country.

He doesn't have to delete his comments. It's a forum. Anyway, I'm not watching but it's not exactly breaking news since they've been talking about it for some time already.

seriously. Just stop. He donated a huge load of cash. And George Clooney has done nothing but humble himself and has tried to take spotlight away from him (ex he has been very timid and non self serving in his comments since then) so please just stop with that nonsense.

I asked a simple question. It's very much important if you are going to praise someone. Had he donated anonymously and the fact came out....he would indeed have done a noble deed.

I distinctly remember two or three multi-network 9/11 benefit concerts after 9/11.

Also - a couple thousand people died in 9/11. Haiti is looking at 150,000+.

(Not trying to diminish the numbers here, but Haiti's situation is FAR, FAR WORSE then 9/11.)

But 9/11 was an attack on American CIVILIANS by Terrorists. Haiti is a Natural Disaster. Just saying.

Ah - I see you drink the Rush Limbaugh Kool-Aid.

I should have known better then to try and reason with you.

Look, we know - you hate generous Americans and democrats and liberals and anyone who wants to take away your guns and give you a public healthcare option. You want to build a 300 foot tall electrified fence around the entire USA, deport all minority immigrants, ban the Spanish language and reinact the Boston Tea party. You also want to ban all abortion rights, stop trying to save the enviornment and you dream about hunting endangered speicies.

Yes, yes. yes - we know all this. You don't have to try to hide it. It's practically in bright, neon lights with everything you post.

Well it will help but there is always an ulterior motive for donations. You'd be surprised what tax deductions can do when you are in the income bracket these guys are in.

even if it is 500,000 dollars, thats still a lot of money to help. Stop looking over other peoples donations so much and donate yourself.

In 2002 there were approximately 32.6 million Americans going to bed hungry. In 2004 the poverty rate rose 12.7 percent.

I think it's sad that some of you people are criticizing celebrities for donating more money than most of you people will ever make in your lifetimes.

Who cares if it's a puiblicity stunt? Would you rather they go blow the money on buying a ticket on a Russian Space Shuttle trip around the Earth? Or a trip to the Space Station?

Or buy a new fleet of Lamborghinis?

Sheesh.

I don't think a single Haitian is complaining about only getting 1 million dollars from Brad Pitt or George Clooney.

And 15 years from now if the Hatian people get back on their feet and translated Brad Pitt/George Clooney movies sell-out every night in a rebuilt Porte au Prince movie theater, I don't think we'll look back on their donations as venture capital... I mean, I'm pretty cynical, but give me a break!

[QUOTE="LJS9502_basic"][QUOTE="Tjeremiah1988"] I mean, when I heard the host donated a mill, I admit I laughed a little but it is something and is very huge for the people of Haiti. peaceoutmedusa

Well it will help but there is always an ulterior motive for donations. You'd be surprised what tax deductions can do when you are in the income bracket these guys are in.

even if it is 500,000 dollars, thats still a lot of money to help. Stop looking over other peoples donations so much and donate yourself.

Don't assume you know what I do with my money.....

Netherscourge

Considering the evolving nature of Pirate's argument I think he eventually would argue for nothing less than perfection at home before we look outside our borders ;)

That was pirates argument not mine. I just provided the dude with some facts since he seemed to think all was well here.

That is immaterial. It's not the total contribution that is important but the total percent of one's income. So someone giving only $100 could be contributing more than someone giving $500,000.;)

I don't think you got mine. Yes I did get yours by the way. It was immaterial. And again...you don't know my income nor how much I donate.

Not to take anything away from good deeds here but does anyone else find it a little disturbing and sad that Americans are so much more willing to help other countries out than their fellow Americans? There wasn't this kind of charity during 9/11. :?

peaceoutmedusa
Yes there was. The 9/11 telethon was one of the hugest telethons ever. And you have to remember that more than 20 times as many people died in the Haiti earthquakes. Btw, since I answered your question could you delete your comment since second comments tend to make or break new threads... No offense, but this message really needs to get out.

 the last line is amazing. anyway, good for Haiti, people guys indeed.

I live in Germany and remember watching the US 9/11 telethons with The Rolling Stones, The Who, Billy Joel etc.

I am so sick of the media craze around haiti. For the last week, everytime I open the news channel there someone talking about Haiti. Nothing else is happening in the world worthy of our attention? I had to go on wiki to see who won the senate election
