Not to take anything away from good deeds here but does anyone else find it a little disturbing and sad that Americans are so much more willing to help other countries out than their fellow Americans? There wasn't this kind of charity during 9/11. :?

Yes there was. The 9/11 telethon was one of the hugest telethons ever. And you have to remember that more than 20 times as many people died in the Haiti earthquakes. Btw, since I answered your question could you delete your comment since second comments tend to make or break new threads... No offense, but this message really needs to get out.

 the last line is amazing.

which is why there is still a HUGE telethon tonight.....

I am so sick of the media craze around haiti. For the last week, everytime I open the news channel there someone talking about Haiti. Nothing else is happening in the world worthy of our attention? I had to go on wiki to see who won the senate electionFranko_3
what are you talking about??? The election coverage was all over CNN over the last 3 days.

I have some news for you die-hard "America-First" peeps:

The United States, right now, is better off then just about every other country in the world.

Even with 10% unemployment, swine flu outbreaks, Toyota vehicle recalls, US troops stretched thin all over the globe, a run-away deficit, tax increases, landslides, Hurricane Katrina, high crime rates, 9/11, Amber Alerts, [I feel like I'm singing a Billy Joel Song here], Pat Robertson, John Edwards' infidelity, bridges to nowhere, government over-spending and Bret Favre singing the Pants on the Ground Song, the USA right now is WAY WAY WAY BETTER OFF then just about every other country in the world.

America's homeless get more food and shelter then WORKING people in some other countries.

So please, stop worrying about this country's problems in comparison to other countrys' problems, like Haiti. It's insulting to humanity to suggest we should be taking care of ourselves first - we're already taken care of. Seriously. You are FINE. Even if you're living in a 1 bedroom apartment because you can't afford the mortgage on your house anymore, you're STILL FINE.

There aren't barricades of corpses lining your streets or helicopters air-dropping food to your neighborhoods for fear of being overrun by starving-looters.

Get some perspective. PLEASE.

Netherscourge

The homeless tend to sleep in the street (no matter the weather) and if they eat it is from garbage bins. Not sure how romantic a picture that is to you....but I don't find it a good way of life.

And yet it's still nowhere NEAR as bad as the situaiton and conditions for people in Haiti right now.

The extremes of homelessness in America is nothing compared to the extremes of everyday life in some other countries.

Spend a week with your family in a straw hut, next to a crocodile infested river where you draw your water from, surronded by gangs of gun-toting criminals who rape and murder every night in the Congo and tell me how much better off those people are then America's homeless population...

Heck, spend a night in Haiti right now and tell me how much better off they are then our homeless. Their dumpsters are probably filled with dismembered body parts right now - would you trade that situation with our homeless situation?

Again - it's all about perspective.

This country is doing just fine when you look at the world around us.

Just because the homeless are in the US doesn't mean they have an easy life. Would you like to be homeless in the north during winter with the cold chill seeping into the old ragged clothes you wear to protect your self? Would you like sleeping on the cold pavement with a newspaper for cover? Dig for your food out of a dumpster? There is very much violence amongst the homeless themselves. Anything, no matter how insignificant can be stolen in heart beat. I don't see why you negate the fact that terrible conditions exist in the US just because other countries have terrible conditions. Bad is bad...no matter what country the live in.

I'm responding to the "America-First" people who are trying to prioritize charity for a microcosm over a macrocosm.

[I know what I'm pointing out sounds insensitive locally, but I think the insensitivity from the other side is much harsher and needs to be addressed with some harsh, big-picture reality.]

[QUOTE="LJS9502_basic"][QUOTE="peaceoutmedusa"] seriously. Just stop. He donated a huge load of cash. And George Clooney has done nothing but humble himself and has tried to take spotlight away from him (ex he has been very timid and non self serving in his comments since then) so please just stop with that nonsense.

Snipes_2

I asked a simple question. It's very much important if you are going to praise someone. Had he donated anonymously and the fact came out....he would indeed have done a noble deed.

I agree with this. One Million is Chicken Feed for these celebrities. Plus, They donate so everyone knows how "Good and Caring" they are. Not saying ALL of them are like this, but a majority are.

What a bunch of stupid comments. Why don't you tell that to the poor people of Haiti - hey guys stop enjoying your food and improved life, the guy that donated to relieve your pain was just doing it for the fame so it doesn't count! I swear, the comments around here sometimes are just appalling...

It's really nice to see something like this. But we have to remember that giving money is only one part of the solution. Rebuilding and restructuring is going to take a long time. But this telethon and all the other relief effort pouring in to Haiti by America and the international community is a great start.

Well I may be jaded...but loss and devastion occur every day....in every country. Sometimes a cause gets a bit of publicity and then the celebrities jump on it. If they were altruistic...I'd think they'd be helping out the less "sexy" as it were causes on the down low because it seemed to be the right thing to do. Without the need to be patted on the back for it. Note....there are some wealthy individuals that do just that but chances are we don't hear about them.
Which is as it should be in my opinion. And when I do hear of famous that have contributed after the fact...they do get my respect. Public causes....not so much.

200,000 people dying in one earthquake sure is sexy. The celebrities try to use their high profile to a lot of attention in order to bring the issue to light and encourage people/fans to donate. Nobody would watch a telethon consisting of Warren Buffet or Bill Gates talking about donating.

How do I know the news reported this? Of the donations? Because someone that is willing to donate to a cause will do so of their own volition. Celebrities don't own the moral high ground.

100% of the population don't watch the news, or fully understand the gravity of the situation. Celebrities don't need to own the moral high ground, they just need to encourage a few fans to donate, and that's enough, better than not having the telethon and not having those few people donate. Celebrities do hold plenty of sway over their fans/followers.

No some read the news or listen to the news. Again the celebrities aren't making an announcement about the event. That has already been released. Actually I do the opposite. I make up my own mind.

The thing you arent understanding is that all these celebs that "donated" millions will be making that AND more back from being on TV as well as it being written off on the millions of dollars of taxes they owe at the end of the year.

So in reality, they are making money by donating money. Nothing more, nothing less.

PS : I also find it astounding how more money was donated via text messages to haiti in 24 hours than say... Veterans Affairs has had donated all year so far via ALL FORMS of donations combined.

Good point in regards to the rebuilding. Its unfortunate that they lack building standards, but its understandable considering its a third world country. Hopefully the US and others can help them with the proper way to "earthquake proof"a building. It will take time and money but it will all be worth it in the end.

Yeah, I agree... I also think most people will donate on their own and do not need a D bag puppet to tell them to. I have no respect for most of the celebrities in Hollywood as you can probably tell.

I never said they didnt. Im just pointing out that its not the massive noble gesture driven purely by compassion that you seem to think it is. It works out for Haiti either way.

you have no way of knowing that. I know that I can be a bit skeptical about things like this at times, but when people GIVE, I dont just assume that they are in for it for themselves, since it is, after all, GIVING.

I find it just a bit hypocritical that some people in this thread who ahve said citizens need to go to charities for health care instead of the government are now out demonizing people who give to charity, not to mention some of those same people have said that people who don't have insurance just haven't earned it, but as soon as some of that money that those people haven't earned goes to people in need in a different country now suddenly there's a question of entitlement.

And when I do hear of famous that have contributed after the fact...they do get my respect. Public causes....not so much.

LJS9502_basic

I'm sure your respect is an issuethat keeps them up at night.

And that has zero to do with the conversation. Though I don't think that was your intent anyway.;)

Your respect has nothing to do with the conversation, your point?

Thisisn't ad hominem, it's about an element that YOU brought into the topic, your respect. You brought it up, therefore it's part of the topic. It's not relevant when you talk about it and ad hominem when anyone else talks about it.

No it's not part of the topic. It's a comment I made to another user and one you felt the need to use to insult me. That said...this is done.

Did you PM it to him? No, then it's part of the topic. I'm fine dropping it, but it was in no way ad hominem, it's so goddamned sick of people using that crappy excuse of a detraction.

Woah, its on pretty much every single station. Not to be a buzzkill or anything but the real travesty is that it took a 7.0 magnitude earthquake to make the crushing poverty of Haiti widely known.

Regardless, the earthquake is a horrible tragedy.
