The main reason people are turned away from Death Metal is...

...Probably because of the name! I mean, when you hear as light a genre name as Pop, then compare it to Death Metal, you can see why. I mean, sure, a lot of people don't like the music, but I'm willing to say 50% of people who don't listen to it were turned off by its name. Thoughts?kylekatarn10

Im turned away from death metal because I dont like loud obnoxious screaming, or ridiculous growling....I dont like the entire culture of it, the clothes, the thinking...any of it....

oh and im willing to bet the name has extremely little to do with it...

Some Death Metal is okay. I'm not as big a fan as I used to be, but no offense, I think thats cause I've grown up a bit.

What I hate more though is not necessarily music, but the ridiculous elitist attitude that the some of the fans have (Grindcore has bad ones too. My buddy is HUGE into Grindcore and even he admits it). Like they've stumbled upon the holy grail of music, and the rest of us are "simpletons" cause we don't get it and everything we listen to sucks.

There are times though, where I just can't take the vocalist seriously. Grunting and yelling is not musical nor showing off this amazing range and set of pipes. Chris Cornell has amazing range, Chris Barnes doesn't.

Most emo/modern pop songs, I don't even like the instrumental stuff, so I guess Death Metal actually is a step above them in my books.

Most people that are turned away from death and black metal pay too much attention to vocals. All they care about is how catchy a song is and how "nice" the singing is. Plus most death metal and black metal doesn't share the "pop structure" that most metal follows today.

I prefer to be able to understand what the vocalist is saying. Generally with DM I don't usually get that.MattUD1

Actually the "I could care less" part was meaning I could care less what people think of me, it really doesn't bother me. Thanks for the last sentence though. All I really wanted was to have my opinion respected for once...But of course, that's just a crazy though isn't it?

I can't believe this thread is still going...Have you listened to 5 bands? There's tons of subgenres of metal, most of which sound nothing like the other...

go listen to Amon Amarth, Gojira, Opeth, Canibal Corpse, and Insomnium, and come back and tell me they sound exactly the same. and i can understand the majority of Death Metal bands i listen to.

Main reason I hear is "i don't like the vocals" which is fine, they're an aqquired taste, but another one I hear is "it's satanic" which of course isn't really right at all, that would be Black metal, which actually is centered around Satan worshipping, but not Death Metal, that's centered around, funnily enough, death. The clue is in the title.

Actually, I don't like Death Metal all that much, come to think of it, though i am a fan of the growling etc... It's just often a bit silly to me. Now two of my favourite bands, Behemoth and Amon Amarth, are Death Metal, but Behemoth are one of the few intelligent Death Metal bands around, so they actually have meaning, as well as a great sound, and Amon Amarth are simply fun, harmless fun. The rest, as I said, can get silly, the whole "look at us, we're loud and ignorant and we say a lot of swearwords" thing gets old very quickly. Just like rap, the whole image is just ridiculous. Rarely do you find a band in their ranks like Behemoth, most of the rest are very blah, mindless lyrics and no thought in their songs.
