Which are in your opinion, some of the most overrated bands in the world?

IMO:

Led zeppelin- these guys were a bunch of thieves, they stole like over 20 songs, giving no credit to the original author...Jimmy Page just loved to say that he had composed all of those songs, until years after it's release they got sued multiple times and were forced to include the original author in their remaster collections.

And their songs in general, I just dont think they are that cool, I think their success is mostly because they were from a time where it was very hard to come by with good music, so the standards were pretty low.

Guns n' roses- Slash is simply extremely overrated, he is one of the main reasons why I dont listen to anything that is said by the rolling stones (magazine) since they claim he is in the top 10 of the best guitarrists of all time...Slash doesn't goes beyond a single (and pretty simple) pentatonic scale and I believe that his most applauded works (like november rain solos) are just terrible and boring.

And Nirvana- Mostly because of Cobain, he only had a good voice, but he didn't know how to sing, he didn't know how to use it, which was the reason why he would lose his voice after singing 2 songs live, also he was an average guitarrist...the whole "in utero" album only uses like 4 chords. the composition of his songs was ALWAYS the same...a small riff, the chorus, small bridge, solo which was ALWAYS an accelerated version of the main riff, and then repeating the pattern.

And I didnt liked the obssesion the guy had with being "unique" and "underground".

It's always funny because the biggest Nirvana fanboys know NOTHING about grunge, not one band asides from nirvana, maybe 1 or 2 will tell you about pearl jam and that's about it.

Once you get to listen the grunge that wasn't shown in MTV and the radio (like nirvana) you actually see how crappy nirvana was.

I'm actually surprised because in the recent years I have seen how Nirvana is being thrown off the pedestal it was at. good to see people are realizing they were just overrated crap...its a shame that kids still believe they are amazing and that they are the best grunge band ever when their whole experience of grunge comes down to 4 nirvana songs. Plus nirvana was responsible for a whole bottleneck in the 90s music.

The most overrated in the entire universe has got to be U2. Other than that, I'd add Pearl Jam to that list.

Well........ I just can't think of any. In general bands will eventually get the respect they deserve, be that positive or negative - history generally isn't so kind to those who lack any kind of substance.

Saying that I do think Nirvana were far more interesting than Pearl Jam. If you want to critise Nirvana because of song structure, I don't think PJ did anything more 'progressive' than Nirvana. When Bleach came out it was so fresh and intersting. PJ always felt to me a little too 'singalong rock' with the likes of Jeremy and Alive. Pleasent maybe, but nothing that encaptured an audience like Nirvana did.

The emergence of Nirvana actually changed the face of music in the early 90s - if it wasn't for them we'd still be listening to the likes of Warren. Would the Smashing Pupmkins be where they were if Nirvana hadn't opened the door for them? Probably not.

Good. I'll sure as hell take Nirvana over gay butt-rock and half-assed love ballads from the 80s any day of the week. I love Nirvana. I love what they did to the music scene. Things took a turn for the better.

Anyway, I agree with you on all the bands you listed. Sure, they are all good bands, but do they deserve to be on such high of pedestals? Why?

Some more to add to the list:

-Coldplay

-U2

-Animal Collective

-Lady Gaga

-Katy Perry

-Adele

-Arcade Fire

Don't see why the complexity of the music matters providing it sounds good tbh.

To answer your question though for me it has got to be Muse or Gorillaz.

Most things on the mainstream radio these days. Sure, there are some catchy songs, but how many of those bands or singers have actually talent that isn't produced in a recording studio?

Nirvana made a huge bottleneck in music in that it "killed" metal but instead of opening way for a bunge of grunge bands to come out, it only allowed itself to do so. So while in the 80s we had a bunch of different metal bands, which helped with variety, in the 90s we got only around 3 grunge bands and it was the only thing sounding on the radio. it was a bottleneck.

Nirvana is an easy pick for me. I have other personal opinions, but I don't feel it is as factual (as far as music goes anyways) as it is with Nirvana. I would say U2, Dave Mathew, The Killers, Mumford and Sons, and Johnny Cash.

I don't know...they got a lot of mileage out of that one song....>__>

Which one? They all sound the same. Not to mention everyone I know and their grandma likes them, I just don't get it.

I meant all their songs sound the same.:(

Radiohead, Coldplay, Dream Theater etc..

And lol Led Zeppelin isn't overrated. They deserve every praise they get.

lightleggy

they are a bunch of thieves, how the hell do they deserve praise?

They aren't thieves. They've acknowledged the insipiration from some of the songs that they sampled from. What is this 1975?

Out of all the songs they stole they have only, recognized less than half, and they didnt do it until they got sued, before then jimy page literally said he had made those songs.

[QUOTE="lightleggy"] I'm actually surprised because in the recent years I have seen how Nirvana is being thrown off the pedestal it was at. good to see people are realizing they were just overrated crap...its a shame that kids still believe they are amazing and that they are the best grunge band ever when their whole experience of grunge comes down to 4 nirvana songs. Plus nirvana was responsible for a whole bottleneck in the 90s music.lightleggy

The emergence of Nirvana actually changed the face of music in the early 90s - if it wasn't for them we'd still be listening to the likes of Warren. Would the Smashing Pupmkins be where they were if Nirvana hadn't opened the door for them? Probably not.

By the time Nevermind came out the whole grunge thing was getting pretty passe anyway. What Nevermind did help with though is thrusting counterculture into the mainstream (not just grunge). Maybe it was different where you are, however I can't see how Nirvana had a negative impact on the music industry. Sounds to me more an issue with radio playlists. Certainly it wasn't like that in the UK anyway.

I don't go with this "overrated" thing. Name any band and someone is bound to find it overrated or not worth the effort.

During the Led Zeppelin era, I spent my time listening to bands like Montrose, Savoy Brown, BTO, and later expanding to include others like Ted Nugent. But, I would hardly say Led Zeppelin was overrated then.

Same for Guns n Roses during its heyday. I think Bon Jovi restarted the trend away from "New Wave" followed closely by Guns n Roses. After them, all the other hair bands arrived and soon, they all started sounding the same. At that time, I spent my time listening to bands like The Cult. But, just as with Led Zed, I wouldn't call the former two bands overrated.

By the early 90's, I listened to STP (in addition to Pearl Jam). Nirvana's music wasn't to my tastes. But, I wouldn't call it overrated either. I've been also making the move to alternative rock.

I never said pearl jam was good. I dont like pearl jam either, I just said that nirvana fanboys only know about 2 grunge bands :pearl jam and nirvana.

I love Nirvana, and I like Pearl Jam, but I know of many other Grunge bands: Alice In Chains (though a lot of their songs are tagged as Alternative Rock and sometimes Alternative Metal)...... Stone Temple Pilots (Core was very grunge influenced, as was No. 4)......... Soundgarden (once again, some people consider them to be Alternative Metal, but I disagree with this title)....... a few others that I can't think of at the moment.

I could pick a lot of bands and artists that are in the charts today or for the past 7 years for that matter and still a lot of artists that were in the charts since the 50s but were still over saturated commercial music, not all music on charts are crap but a lot are crap I say there is a difference between pop music and mainstream music. I say

AC/DC

Queen

Neutral Milk Hotel- don't get me wrong I like them and there rather abstract lyrics but I think they've gotten undeserved praise of being perfect in the underground scene considering I only really like 2 or 3 songs from them.

Red Hot Chili Peppers-some nice guitar and bass riffs in some songs but mediocre vocalist
