I don't know how an album cover can kill your enjoyment of an album

Because I care about those small details? I relate the image to whatever they do, so it ends up looking creepy, annoying, stupid, ugly.

Well the OK Computer and Kid A covers are pretty sweet, you should like those albums then

I'm listening to Born Again by Black Sabbath at the moment. Often considered one of the worst album covers ever but the music is great. Don't judge based off something that shouldn't truly affect the music.

I agree with Nirvana.

TheFatPerson

I'm actually surprised because in the recent years I have seen how Nirvana is being thrown off the pedestal it was at. good to see people are realizing they were just overrated crap...its a shame that kids still believe they are amazing and that they are the best grunge band ever when their whole experience of grunge comes down to 4 nirvana songs. Plus nirvana was responsible for a whole bottleneck in the 90s music.

Good. I'll sure as hell take Nirvana over gay butt-rock and half-assed love ballads from the 80s any day of the week. I love Nirvana. I love what they did to the music scene. Things took a turn for the better.

Anyway, I agree with you on all the bands you listed. Sure, they are all good bands, but do they deserve to be on such high of pedestals? Why?

Some more to add to the list:

-Coldplay

-U2

-Animal Collective

-Lady Gaga

-Katy Perry

-Adele

-Arcade Fire

ANIMAL COLLECTIVE!!? I saw them in concert on the 22nd. It was so beautiful!

I know its my opinion, no need to become butthurt about it. tastes are subjective

I also dont have "a" favorite band. I like lots of bands and "hate" lots of them aswell. Nirvana is one of those. If they "touch" your soul good for you. For me they do nothing

You simply do not understand Music history that is why.

Please keep up the comedy. LOl seriously kids like you, who believe that nirvana, guns n' roses and slipknot are like the best things that happened to music... cobain wouldn't even be in a REAL top 100.

Oh yeah, I forgot slipknot.... But I like their first album

I view them as a band that is so wrapped up in their self-pretention that they forgot how to write a half decent song. Tried listening to their Merriweather Post Pavilion album and had never been so bored listening to music in my life. I would rather have a 24 hour Pong marathon. I would rather watch clouds pass by.

I'm going to go on the streets and beg someone to ban the word "overrated" from the english language forever.

A shallow, ridiculously stupid word that only imbeciles use.

I can slap it unto anything(and i mean ANYTHING) and i would be right according to the "magic" of this word.

Most hardcore Radiohead fans do not care about that song.

It was made when the band had found no direction and were pretty much just a Nirvana-wanna be.

Hell Thom and Johnny hate that song, which(apart from the fact that it received too much attention compared to the other songs off of the first album) is the reason they don't play it anymore.

Lady Gaga, Katy Perry and Adele aren't bands, and Coldplay should definitely be in that list :)

Okay, well I know they aren't bands, but I still think they get way more credit than they really deserve.

I lol at all the hate Nirvana gets these day by the wanna-be hipster crowd.

They were a great band and living proof that songwriting is more important than anything else music wise.

They weren't technically impressive, but they made such great music that completely changed the face of the music industry.

It's like people hating on the Beatles. Personally, I do not listen to the Beatles, but I'll be damned if I don't respect them. They had such a huge impact on the music industry that I can't even fathom how different things would be without them.

I can agree with the TC on Guns and Roses. They have some classic songs but thats about it. Slash is a good guitarist at best, but gets blown away by plenty of guitarists out there today.

As for overrated bands, here are some ones I find way overrated:

Radiohead: Saw a really awful band performance on TV once. Sat there making fun of them the whole time, especially their singer who couldn't hold a damn note but was dancing around like some crazy hippy, meanwhile the guitarist looked like he had wandered in from some random screamo concert and was playing for the wrong band as he is trying to act hardcore strumming a single note at a slow pace. Turned out that this band was actually Radiohead and I seriously laugh at anyone who thinks they are good.

ACDC: Like Guns and Roses, they have some good songs. Problem with these guys is they all sound the same. The singer is the only one with any real talent, and their drummer/s might just be the most boring the industry has ever seen. Even Linkin Park has more interesting percussion, and I certainly don't listen to Linkin Park for the crazy drumming...

Pink Floyd: God Damn hippy band. Can't stand them at all their music is so damn boring.

Arcade Fire: This band gets so much attention yet their music just plain sucks. I really hate this indyhipster craze. I think it might just be worse than the emo fad we had back a few years ago...

The Rolling Stones: They have like 2 good songs I really like (Paint It Black and Sympathy For the Devil) but beyond that they are just mediocre at best.

I completely agree. It's gotten to the point where people call you a hipster just because you don't have the same taste as them (as evidenced by LostProphet's post)

I was going to get into this-especially considering OT has been deprived of music threads, yes, even ones that are over played like this one. However, it is sad the ignorance people have of music yet have no problem hating on it. But I guess that is the age we live in where opinion trumps fact.

Oh and I hate to burst just about everyones bubble but overrated does not translate into, "bands I dislike." No body has bothered to give an explanation as to why a band is overrated because...they don't know anything about a band besides what they read in wikipedia. Or worse, base it off one album/songs surrounded by societies expectations. Example; If you watched Citizen Kane, I doubt you would agree with most movie specialist that it is one of the most revolutionary films of all time.

If you don't like Nirvana kudos, if you don't like Arcade Fire, then kudos. But that does not make them overrated, that just makes them bands that do not fit your preference.

And lol Led Zeppelin isn't overrated. They deserve every praise they get.

Dream theater is my all time favorite band! Please find me a band that does amazing instrumentation, great lyrics, and good vocals all in one package. Not ovverated at all. I'd have to say guns and roses is complete garbage. Annoying as hell and appetite is their only decent album, what else do they even have?

Muse - Like a few songs, but everything seems like "oh i'm so depressed so I'm gonna make a wall of guitar noise and scream over it then do a quick clean section before returning to noise with clean vocals so everybody will think I'm progressive and my soul is wounded"

Machine Head - Tagalong trend leaches with a douchebag frontman

Kiss - About the same as machine head but squared. Also, Gene is a douchebag.

Dream Theater - Pompous technicality for the sake of it, "intelligent" lyrics, uncoherent songs.

Even though it's hard to stand GNR I like Use your Illusion 1 a lot. Seen a lot of people mention the Beatles, probably my favorite band as I love the harmonies and Harrison's guitar playing but god damn are they overrated to hell. I would have said Queen most likely before I got into singing, some of their songs are pretty fun to sing, good thing about those guys with high voices is that there's always an octave lower to fit right in :)

I'd vote for 99% of these fake folk copy cat bands from 1990's and newer. Morrisett (or how ever you spell her name )Jewel, Counting Crows, and others that I can't remember now.

Grunge is such a s B.S name just because some bands became famous in Seattle.

roulettethedog

Counting Crows? Overrated?

Last time I checked, they were a widely hated band.

Most people that are into metal know dream theater. And thats' about as far as they'll go. And like I said, pompous technicality for the sake of it. Their music is completely sterile to me, all it is is Petrucci showing off his shredding and riffing, Myung is showing off his 6 or 7 string bass but is never actually heard (except Panic Attack and a few other songs... in short sections) , LaBrie is trying to be Bruce Dickinson and a poet at once, fails at both, Rudess goes in and takes a giant dump of out of place keyboard shredding to show off his chops so Petrucci doesent get all the chicks and Portnoy/Mangini are back there pounding away a little faster on gigantic kits so people will think they are ultra competent.

If this thread is any indication you are clearly far from the only one on the anti-Radiohead bandwagon. It's not like Radiohead is some obscure band, they're arguably the most popular rock band of the past 20 years.

Jumping on the anti-Radiohead bandwagon is normal.
Jumping on the anti-Nirvana bandwagon makes you a "hipster".

-Lady Gaga

-Katy Perry

-Adele

-Arcade Fire

hey U2 is good

So people are "hipsters" for not liking a huge band like Nirvana, but disliking The Rolling Stones doesn't make you one because...

JML897

There is no anti-Rolling Stones bandwagon going on now, but there is an anti-Nirvana bandwagon that has been cruising around for a bit now, simple as that.

If this thread is any indication you are clearly far from the only one on the anti-Radiohead bandwagon. It's not like Radiohead is some obscure band, they're arguably the most popular rock band of the past 20 years.

Jumping on the anti-Radiohead bandwagon is normal.

You fail to remember that Radiohead IS a hipster band. ;)

Nirvana, White Stripes, Green Day = Garbage.

This thread is asking for overrated bands, not bands you think are garbage.

The difference being?

Radiohead, Coldplay, Dream Theater etc..

And lol Led Zeppelin isn't overrated. They deserve every praise they get.

YoshiYogurt

Dream theater is my all time favorite band! Please find me a band that does amazing instrumentation, great lyrics, and good vocals all in one package. Not ovverated at all. I'd have to say guns and roses is complete garbage. Annoying as hell and appetite is their only decent album, what else do they even have?

Periphery and i honestly think they do it better, they do have dream theater influences but take it to that level that just hit the spot.

Petrucchi even has a guest solo on their 2nd album and to be honest put on a far better show than Dreamtheater when i seen both of them in the Clyde Auditorium this year.

Being overrated = being put on a pedestal. You can still think a band is good, just not the best band in the world. Okay, class is over, its recess time.

So now hipsters like one of the most famous bands in the world?

You have such a weird definition of hipster and I don't get it

You do realize that Radiohead is a band that refuses to play their biggest single live because they hated being known for it, right? You also do realize that the hipster trend is huge right?

Being famous has nothing to do with hipster level....

The reason Radiohead doesn't really like Creep is because at earlier shows the crowd wouldn't care about the rest of their music and they would just be excited for Creep. If you were part of a band, wouldn't that annoy you too? You put so much effort into all these other songs and the crowd only cares about one of them.

They "refuse to play" a lot of their earlier songs in general. They very rarely play anything off of their debut album which is the album Creep was on (and for the record they have played Creep at some fairly recent shows). Their recent setlists have skewed heavily towards songs released in 2000 or later. Are all bands who play setlists mainly dedicated to recent material hipsters?

They also know their audience; their audience doesn't really care to see a fairly generic alt rock song from the 90s. Modern concertgoing Radiohead fans aren't fans of the band because of Creep, they're fans of the band because of albums like OK Computer, Kid A, and In Rainbows (which are albums that they play a lot of songs from).

AKA, they know their audience is full of hipsters.

BTW they stopped playing Creep fairly quickly and it wasn't anything to do with what their audience wanted (which at that time alot of the audience WANTED to hear Creep as that was what they were known for). They stopped playing BECAUSE it is what they were famous for and the band has even stated that.

I edited my post before your response

They didn't hate it because it was famous, they hated it because the crowd didn't care about anything else during a show.

I don't get how anyone who has listened to OK Computer/Kid A/In Rainbows can call Radiohead overrated. If those don't at least qualify as "I don't get it, but I respect it" territory I don't know what does. And lol at calling Radiohead a hipster band.

My pick would've been Grizzly Bear, but for whatever reason Shields was what finally caused them to click for me. I guess if I had to pick something I'd go with Animal Collective, but you kind of expect them to get over/under-praised at any given time simply by the nature of their music.

It seems LostProphet doesn't understand the concept of Hipster or why Radiohead doesn't play Creep, oh well.
