What is it with this? People get really worked up over it. I just don't see why I should care at all. Seriously, I've seen some people who are so extreme in their Mac loving that they said "All PC owners are (inapropriate name here.)" i just don't see why people get so into it. Perhaps OT can help me with this?

It starts because most PC users don't have a clue about Macs... and yet talk bad about them.

A higher percentage of Mac users will be familiar with PCs than vice versa.

PC's are a win, especially if you are looking for gaming. Macs are just restricting with their app or software support, They cost more yet give the same hardware as their equivalents., etc. macs look classy. this discussion could go on. You have to decide which options you prefer in your new computer.

It's like Religion. When someone contains an unreasonable amount of faith into one particular product, they seek justification for their purchase to offset lingering doubt.

Not necessarily true, I've known people who've used Macs their whole lives (and, conversely, people who've used PCs their whole lives). If you're going to make broad generalizations about a group of people, you should back them up.

I won't conduct research where common sense suffices. You're the one making the bold claim that there are many people who don't know how to use a PC. My claim is not so bold. My claim is that most people don't know how to use a Mac.

I never made a claim that there are many people who don't know how to use a PC, I merely question your claim that many more people don't know how to use a Mac than how to use a PC. "Common sense" aside (not being a very compelling argument), what evidence do you have to support it?

I told you already. Market share. Because of that, more people will have come into contact with a PC and not a Mac. If you disagree, I suggest you explain why that wouldn't be so.

Because market share isn't a great indicator of whether or not people have come into contact with a PC/Mac. You use computers aside from your individual computer at various times (using a friends/family member's computer, using a school/business computer, etc.). For example, I don't own a Mac, but I've used one many times in the last (academic) year helping a friend with Stata.

So I don't find an argument from market share convincing. It only indicates the percentage of each type of computer available, not how many people have come into contact with each kind.

Because Mac owners are trying to justify the money they wasted on their overpriced things.

I can do just about everything a Mac can on PC for far less plus more gaming which is why I don't own a Mac.

I'm just going to leave this here...

By the way, SolidSnake, nothing you've said substantiates this original claim anyway (that most PC users who talk bad about Macs don't have a clue about them). Keep in mind that the subgroup of people who "talk bad" about Macs are probably compositionally different from the userbase as a whole.

I've seen enough threads here to know that PC users are typically ignorant of even the most basic things... like the "lack of" a right click.

Right clicking isn't even a real argument made, it's just an "icing on the cake" type thing. :? If you're really seeing a lot of these users, you'd know they have much bigger complaints.

And Macs (at least the ones that I've used) don't have a right-click mouse in the same way. You use control + mouse, which is remarkably less convenient than just having a right mouse button.

I'm on a Mac right now. It's in System Preferences, but that's beside the point; it should have right click on by default.

If it was a desktop, you can buy a mouse with a right click. Even the official Apple mouse has a right click. As for the laptop range, two fingers on the trackpad and click. It is BETTER than the standard PC right click button. And that isn't mere icing on the cake. The trackpads on MacBooks are vastly to superior to anything I've seen on other laptops.

Perhaps... but somewhat ironic if PC users were to moan about having to tweak preferences. Isn't it that tweaking that makes Windows so desirable anyway?

I remember back in 2009 when I built my desktop (total of $1400 including a great 23.5'' monitor and OS), I compared it to some of the Macs; Mac desktops that cost over $2000 had lower specs than the desktop I built. :?

Well, seeing as I never use my laptop trackpad, I don't much care how good a MacBook trackpad is. A mouse is much better than a trackpad. :P

MacBook trackpads are practically as good as a mouse... unless you're gaming. I never bought a mouse for my MacBook... three years I had it... I bought a Vaio and bought a mouse after a few months. And as for specs, my three year old MacBook runs Leopard, which wasn't out at the time, as fast as my new Vaio runs Windows 7. And the hardware difference is pretty huge.

They have a lot more going for them than you. Probability says that if there are a lot more PCs, people are a lot more familiar with them. People who use a Mac are more likely to be familiar with both, due to how inescapable the PC is in market share. It's not undeniable proof, but it's a good argument.

It's very simple: the PC vs. Mac commercials were so ****ing obnoxious and toxic that I would never buy a Mac. The mere thought of owning anything with an "i" in front of it's name (iMac, iPod, iAK-47, etc.) fills me with nausea and disgust.

Dealing with people who prefer Apple products is like dealing with evangelicals. "My life was incomplete... and then I discovered the Word of Steve Jobs! Accept Apple as your personal Technology Savior!" ...yeah...

Finally, Apple is just plain evil.

People who use a Mac are more likely to be familiar with both, due to how inescapable the PC is in market share. It's not undeniable proof, but it's a good argument.

Not sure what you mean by that first sentence, I haven't made an argument yet besides to question his. Again, as I've said above, because exposure to computers comes from various sources other than an individual's computer, and because any given computer owner will likely have owned at least one other computer, market share does not seem convincing to this argument.

Because Mac owners are trying to justify the money they wasted on their overpriced things.

I can do just about everything a Mac can on PC for far less plus more gaming which is why I don't own a Mac.[QUOTE="gameguy6700"]

I'm just going to leave this here...

What processes are you comparing the two computers on, and what are the hardware differences?chessmaster1989
General use... start up time is the same for both.... Office, Adobe Reader, Firefox, iTunes. My MacBook had a 1.83Ghz DuoCore, 1gig of RAM. My Vaio has an i5 thing and 4gigs of RAM.

There's more programming support for Windows - you can Google search for a PC utility, and get literally hundreds of choices. The PC just has more of everything, from freeware to utilities to uber-games.

A higher percentage of Mac users will be familiar with PCs than vice versa.SolidSnake35
Because mac users have to switch to PC to be able to do anything useful?

I won't argue that point with someone who clearly uses their PC for important tasks and nothing else.

Yeah, for that kind of use the spec differences aren't going to matter at all. That's why you don't notice any difference.

Where you will notice a definite difference is in more intensive processes, such as games or certain other software. One of my favorite examples of this is what recently happened to me, when I tried to work with a 4gb data set in Stata on my desktop, which at the time only had 4gb of RAM. Needless to say, it took a few minutes to even load the data set, and beyond that the program basically couldn't run, well, anything with it. It was only when I upgraded my computer with 4gb more of RAM (to 8gb total) that I was actually able to do things with it. :P
