There are some who do which is unfortunate. Like I said before, I do not agree with 'picking and choosing', so when you see someone who claims to be Christian do this, it proves nothing.

Um well considering that the Bible is supposed to be the wordf of God and all mere people have no right to choose what they believe. That would be undermining the ultimate proof that is their God.

Then you do not understand the scriptures. The NT gave a new higher law from Jesus Christ. There is no picking and choosing. There is following Jesus Christ.

There are things in the New Testament that we shouldn't follow... Some advocating that women shouldn't speak in church and other sexist things..

Eh, I just heard about the drunkeness thing somewhere on the internet. Although a lot of Christians do pick and choose from the Bible.

ghoklebutter

If something is considered obsolete, why should it not be left out?

Should Christians abide by every bit of obsoleteness found in the Bible just so that they are not accused of picking and choosing?

Well that doesn't mean they have to take it 100% literally.

Some obsolete teaching cannot be reconciled by having in mind that its not literal. Not everything is so interpretable.

But the point remains, some teachings of the Bible, logically, are not still being followed. And that is not picking and choosing.

Ok how bout people should be put to death who curse their parents? Matthew 15:1-9 1 Then some Pharisees and teachers of the law came to Jesus from Jerusalem and asked, 2 "Why do your disciples break the tradition of the elders? They don't wash their hands before they eat!" 3 Jesus replied, "And why do you break the command of God for the sake of your tradition? 4 For God said, 'Honor your father and mother' and 'Anyone who curses his father or mother must be put to death.' 5 But you say that if a man says to his father or mother, 'Whatever help you might otherwise have received from me is a gift devoted to God,' 6he is not to 'honor his father' with it. Thus you nullify the word of God for the sake of your tradition. 7You hypocrites! Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you: 8 " 'These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. 9 They worship me in vain; their teachings are but rules taught by men.'"

I know that. The Koran says to limit your intake of acholol in some verse yet I'm not following because that law was introduced when measures were made to restrict and eventually ban it.

There are other things not followed in the Bible, and not always for a logical reason.

Thank you for proving my point you do not understand. Jesus directed this to the Pharisees. I'll explain more in detail later since I'm on my way to Church.

Privlege what the hell privlege is that? Don't speak unless spoken too.. Its pretty much common knowledge that women were treated at best as second class citizens and at worse property..

The Bible probably said that because of the old laws for women. Women go through PMS, which makes them unfit for the job since they are more forgetful, irritable, and so on. Of course that's "oppression."

The culture was sexist. It wasn't long ago that women couldn't vote in the US. Should we assume all present US male citizens are sexist due to the culture of the day?

Well that doesn't mean women couldn't anything. It's just that for sermons, depending on whether Christians believe that blood is impure, it's a little impractical. Same law in Judaism.

I'm generalizing. I've personnally seen lots of Christians ignore parts of the bible. I even met someone who said that Abraham was a mass-murderer and stuff. But then again, that is a display of ignorance.

Yes indeed and it has nothing to do with what a logical person would do: to find what is obsolete and only read as part of the society in which it was written; not as a part of today.

Well for starters this verse forbids pork:

"And the swine, because it divideth the hoof, yet cheweth not the cud,
it is unclean unto you. Ye shall not eat of their flesh, nor touch their
dead carcass." [Deuteronomy 14:8]

Uh as I replied above.....that is Jewish law and custom. Not Christian. I believe some denominations of the Jewish faith still follow that.

Yeah... too bad you don't need religion to have morality or ethical guidelines. And there was religion well before Christianity. Even if Christianity had not existed or died out along the way, another religion would be there to take its place. So its not really as important as you may think.

Also, "fear" is never a good thing. Whether in fear or God or in fear of the government. It only causes panic and distress, exactly the opposite of something that a religion should want to instill in its followers.

spartan life, ancient egyptian life, etc... were all brutal as hell... would you like to live by the spartan code?

LeGoofyGoober

There were far far many more types of society than those. Why do you consider ancient egyptian life hell? Are you one of those believers that think that in order to build their pyramids they used slaves? Perhaps you should then take a look at recehnt evidence that argue that belief and point, not towards slave labour, but paid labour with family benefits.

yeah, it was all great and fun back then man. hey, i heard the little spartan children enjoyed killing one another to prove there worth!!!!

I'm not talking about the spartans I'm talking about the egyptians. Way to use a strawman.

When i reads statements like the one made by the tc. I wonder if people like him understands concepts like empathy.

This quote seems relevant: "A man's ethical behavior should be based effectually on sympathy, education, and social ties and needs; no religious basis is necessary. Man would indeed be in a poor way if he had to be restrained by fear of punishment and hope of reward after death." Albert Einstein

I wouldn't exactly say Christianity is totally important.

Before Christianity, there were other religions with moral guidelines that helped people too.

I'm not trying to change anyone's religion either. I'm saying that there are people out there, who are Christian, who only do things out of fear of punishment. I'm not saying it's right. I'm not trying to convert anyone to Christianity. I'm saying for some people, God is all they have, and if they ever thought that God didn't exist, they might not be so willing to be a kind and courteous person to other humans.

I see you two have run the theists off so you are arguing amongst yourselves. Today is a sad sad day for non-believers everywhere.

I disagree. People got along before Christianity was around. Plus there is just inner morality. It does not always have something to do with religion.

The reason society runs (kinda)smoothly is because we have a natural instinct to preserve our existence. Kill somebody and that hurts our chances of survival so the killer is punished. Go to school and graduate and society gives you the nod. It's all about self-preservation.
