There will be no more virgins if women are allowed to drive, said Saudi Clerics.

Women being content with being second-cIass citizens, really.

It's depressing the degree to which Saudi Arabia disregards the capabilities approach to progress.

THE_DRUGGIE

I invite you to visit Saudi Arabia and question its public before making such a remark. The responses may very well prove interesting to you. Otherwise, I fail to see how one thinks or knows how everyone feels down here.

Given that these statements are being said and considered valid in the nation, the fact that women can feel contention in what is happening around them in regard to their capabilities is indicative of negligence of the capabilities approach, thus meaning the halt of social progress.

What statements? The fact that women can feel contention in what is happening around them in regard to their capabilities is indicative that women can feel contention in what is happening around themin regard to their capabilities. Do not utilize objectivity for subjectivity. ;)

Objectivity/subjectivity have no place in the capabilities approach, it is more in line with utilitarianism in terms of spirit but has different application than such a philosophy.

That said, the statement that has been the subject of this entire thread is what is being referred to here.

Also, simply feeling content while also being second-cIass citizens is the exact opposite of the capabilities approach.

This is admittedly a little higher-level Political Science.

In your words: "the fact that women can feel contention in what is happening around them in regard to their capabilities is indicative of negligence of the capabilities approach, thus meaning the halt of social progress."

fact = objective

indication = subjective

you used a shared factual experience of mine to forward a subjective opinion of yours, which is: "negligence of the capabilities approach, thus meaning the halt of social progress"

I must admit, I am a little confused about what the last post is trying to say, academic it seems. I ask of you to carry this on in a simpler language.

It's a side-effect of studying in the field of Political Science, I'm afraid. Just trying to express how I view this situation the way I see it.

I know that. I'm just saying a lot of people view Saudi Arabia from a western view or a bad agenda. I suppose the former is fine, but I cannot help but remind you that your perception might be different in reality.

I don't think Saudi Arabia and its culture is inherently bad, if that's what you're getting at.

I'm simply saying that the capabilities (what they can actually do) of women is not being realized despite their contentment.

Of course you can't perfect that kind of approach since not everyone will be able to, even in nations considered to be adopting this approach well.

But not using this approach results in misery.

It's true. I've been doing my part to stamp out virginity for over a decade, and cars played a key role in this.

Nice, judge the denizens of a country and everyone who follows the same religion as them by one out-of-context report received from a single delusional "scholar" from the same country that has one of the lowest crime rates in the world. Women in Saudi Arabia are actually quite content with their life style, and although it may not seem so to a person living somewhere else in the world, being able to drive around is honestly not that big of an issue when most Saudi women have personal drivers or take a taxi instead of driving. I do not agree with the views presented in this report, and I am sure that the Saudi government will reject anything that even closely resembles the beliefs held in this alleged report. Having lived in Saudi Arabia for most of my life, I can assure you that only a minority of citizens state outlandish things such as this, and most are very content with simply getting a job, being with friends and family, getting married, and drinking Qahwa. Also, I hope at least one person changes their approach to knowledge about the Middle East after reading this comment. If you would like to actually learn more about how life is in the Middle East, I suggest reading Arab Voices by Dr. James Zogby - a truly outstanding book that presents both factual polls and the author's personal experience in the Middle East.

What is there to discuss besides the stupidity of the clerics in Saudi Arabia?

Victorious_Fize

. It's too bad Saudi women can't move away freely. I would find it hilarious if they all moved to the west.

It's funny, last I went to a mall. I didn't see women madly screaming "SAVE US" to the world. They were, you know, shopping, and, surprisingly, having fun, in Saudi Arabia! Ain't that a shocker!

if there's still an arbitrary limit placed on women's freedom of movement and independence, pointing out a few activities they're allowed to have isn't a solution.

what if they want more? what if at some point, they can't rely on an escort or a taxi, (like they're not available for some reason and it's important she drives somewhere?) or they just want to step up and take care of themselves?

Women in Saudi Arabia are only content because they're afraid to speak the truth.
