I know, I would've been way more into Home Alone if Macaulay Culkin just hid under his bed and cried the whole time.Overlord93
When I was a child my mum put shoes in the washing machine then went out shopping. I was watching TV when the washing machine started up and made this crashing which sounded like heavy footsteps/someone raiding cupboard somewhere in the house. I spent like 2 hours hiding behind a chair.
inb4 coolstory
Lol, maybe that could be used in the gritty ro-boot that's bound to be coming down the pipe :P

Most movies now have political agendas because they feel they must "educate us."

True. But the thing is they aren't even subtle about it. They blatantly present one point of view as completely the right way and anyone who has another viewpoint is an evil demon only intent on causing suffering to others.

When police need time on the phone to locate where the call is from, "60 seconds to trace" lol. It happens right away. Just adding suspense.

Yeah. Like in Crash. I don't know why people loved that movie so much. It just slaps you across the face with all of its themes.

Seriously guys.. the whole point of a film is to take you away from reality kind of.

CBR600-RR

The purpose of (most) films is to entertain. There are many different ways films accomplish this, but some films do it be attempting to portray a plausible reality. When these films are inconsistent with their own rules, that ****s this up and annoys people.

Of course, the reason I created this thread was to entertain people with the different things movies get wrong in their diteails, not to damn them for their inconsistancies :P

Glasses that are obviously non-functional, because you can tell, from the way light is reflecting off them, that they're flat.

Anachronisms always bug me. The movie 'Ray' had a really bad one. It was the late '40s, and they were driving a vintage car, but the car passed under a freight-train made up of modern, double-stack container cars. I guess they figured most people wouldn't notice, but to anyone who's interested in trains they may as well been driving a Prius or using cellphones.

You forgot to mention that an automatic rifle will go through a clip in about 30 seconds. In movies, people are firing almost endlessly without reloading.Rikardur

A lot faster than that. The rate of fire on most assault rifles means guys in movieswould be reloading constantly; they'd spend as much time reloading as firing. Why don't guys (hardly) ever reload in movies? I dunno. Seems like it would be a way to occasionally add tension.

Hehe, I'm into watches, so I notice watch-related snafus. Examples:

 • In Broken Arrow, John Travolta sets off an EMP blast that knocks out all the electronics in the area (which crashes a helicopter, amongst other things). Then he immediately checks his watch--a Breitling Aerospace, which is electronic--and it's still working.
 • Opposite of the above, in War of the Worlds, at the beginning the aliens send out something that stops electronics. Tom Cruise is wearing an Omega, which stops, even though it's mechanical.
 • In The Taking of Pelham 123, the watch Travolta (again) is wearing constantly changes. It goes back and forth between a plain white Breitling and a blue Breitling chronograph. It happens about a dozen times.

I can think of any other specific incidents, but this sort of stuff happens frequently. Mechanical watches will beep when someone presses a button, diving watches will stop working after someone gets a tiny bit of water on them, watches that should sweep (second hand moves smoothly) don't, and vice-versa. None of this stuff really bothers me; it's just kinda amusing when I catch it.

They only have to reload when it is convenient to the plot, of course.

You've mentioned your opinion on a single incident in a single genre of film. I hope this isn't supposed to be a rebuttal to the general principles I mentioned above, because it's not.

It was just an example. These things do not really bother me to be honest unless it's just really silly. I don't sit and try to find these flaws, kinda sad.

I agree. People in movies have it.

I notice sound in space in movies more than anything else. Though, doesn't sound technically travel at impossibly low... frequencies is it? (my memory of the physics of sound is bad), so we could imagine that we're some kind of super-robot listening in... O__o

The interior of a submarine. In movies like Crimson Tide, it's huge. You could have a block party in there. In real life, a submarine doesn't even have enough room inside of it for two guys to stand up in the same room.

What about two guys standing up and one laying down?

It's kind of boring not hearing anything in space, 2001 for example. Like I said, adds effect being unrealistic.

Sound only travels through solid, liquids and gases I think.

Yes, rifles on full automatic only take 3-4 seconds on full auto to empty the magazine.

True, but:
Apparently there's some gasses in space, but our eardrums aren't sensitive enough to pick up the vibrations.

So, super-robots we will be, listening to our space fights.

Yes, I believe sound only travels through something and not nothing. I thought those scenes in total silence in 2001, where the astronaut tries to rescue the other astronaut, were kind of interesting (unlike most of the film, which bored me to tears). In general, though, space is way more exciting with sound. Luke Skywalker's attack on the Death Star would not have been nearly as exciting without the sounds.

3D movies - Even if the movie sucks, it will still get released under the "3D" moniker and make others want to see it just for the 3D effects. AND A sequel or prequel to a great movie that ended on a high note and never got one till 20 years later with a crappy straight-to-DVD release.

GAMING in movies! People allways smash the freaking buttons like there was no tomorrow, it annoys the hell out of me. But i get it, if the actor played it like he should, non gamers would think "what the hell, is not even pressing the buttons". It's just like driving, in movies, even if the car is going down a straight road, the actor is allways steering the wheel to make us believe he is actually driving.

Like someone said before, i hated the Hurt Locker for all the things they got wrong, then again, I'm no expert.

The nerd takes off her glasses and shakes her hair...instant babe! People actually say "according to my calculations". So long as there is 80s montage music going on in the background, you can run halfway across a city without breaking a sweat or running out of breath. You can run through post-9/11 airport security as long as your true love is just about to board a plane (bonus points if it's bound for Paris). Bullet wounds and knife wounds don't hurt half as much as when the love interest is treating you afterwards. Typing reeeeeeally fast into DOS will make you hack multiple mainframes and protocols and internets. So long as you do an epic roll, falling from 10+ feet won't hurt you at all. Wielding dual pistols/machine guns is both more convenient and highly accurate. Violently shaking and crying over the corpse of your loved one will be more effective than CPR.

Cop cars in movies are often being opened from the inside (when bad guy or good guy jumps out) which is bs.

If the actor blinks when he shoots a gun means he doesn't have any experience shooting. Seen it a few times but not very often (they send actors to learn to shoot often).

True. But the thing is they aren't even subtle about it. They blatantly present one point of view as completely the right way and anyone who has another viewpoint is an evil demon only intent on causing suffering to others.

Yeah. Like in Crash. I don't know why people loved that movie so much. It just slaps you across the face with all of its themes.

This, as i was watching it i jsut kept thinking how is this considered deep or good and why did it win and Academy award.

-Guns do not have unlimited ammunition

-Shooting the killer in the head means he is dead! He will not wake up and come after you again (being human of course)

-Shooting at a car will not cause it to blow up

-When the doors are all locked in the house and you cant get out that does not mean you are trapped. Unlock the door...

-The killer who walks will not catch you if you run, just don't fall and stop looking over your shoulder!

I could probably go on but this is what I can think of at the moment :D

I'm just curious, have you seen a movie made AFTER the early 90s?vadicta
How can I see a movie that hasn't been made yet, foo? Crazy time travelling jibber jabber! Now if you'll excuse me, I need to go buy some leg warmers and a leather jacket.

Why the hell does the bad guy always have a private army of henchmen? I mean, the pay can't be that great, and honestly, who wants to work for a rule-happy megalomaniac? You'd never get to slack off! And they ALWAYS die by the handful, despite being professionally trained soldiers...
