So, im thinking of dropping out of high school, im a junior and i just cant take it. I wanna be an artist and im not learning anything about that in school, or anything that i willneed in life. Ive learned the basics. Eitherway, im gonna be an artist.I figure i can practice and work until i can go to college. I figure, with the variety of people on ot, ill be bound to get some good advice. I also wanna put out there that my family is very strict on this, i feel pressured to finish high school but i dont think i can. I feel like, if i drop out, they will consider me a faliure. It sucks, but it is my life. I havent discussed this with them yet. What do you think i should do? Also, please specify what option you chose and why you chose that.

Since you're so close, I would just finish high school. Then you can do whatever you want.

Finnish High school, then you can easily pursue a job/career without further education.

However, if you choose to continue onto higher education that option is still open/ In my experience at least, most employers are not to impressed if you lack a high school(or similar) education.

Even an artist needs a job. It takes time and effort to establish yourself enough to live only through your artistic endeavors and starving is not very fun.

I thought you had to graduate High School in order to go to college?

Either way, don't drop out, you'll regret it in the long run.

Do you know how few people are really able to make a good living being an artist? I would stay in school and get some real qualifications, that way you could even join an arts course somewhere.

I chose to be a loser throughout high school. I ditched constantly and was high the whole time and ended up 2 credits short of graduating. I ended up getting my GED. From my experience I say stay in school and finish it up properly. My life was a mess

10 years later and it hasn't gotten that much better so don't be like me :P

I dont care, its what i wanna do. I honestly wouldnt give a **** if i was a freakin hobo, but got to do what i loved. I wanna start a company, with it. Maybe a mural painting one? My parents own a stone business (they make countertops and stuff) so i always have that backing and i could do art on the side. They could also give me advice on starting a business.

Finish HS. You need to have a diploma/GED to even be a manger anywhere (Walmart, etc.) School is not for everyone, just grin and bear it for a couple years

Don't flunk high school under no circumstances. Bailing out will greatly limit your later life choices. Not all modern day artists are able to sustain themselves from their art. There's a possibility you're going to need a part time job. You'll be screwed without a high school diploma.

I would have to say you are being very short sighted. I used to believe that i was gonna become an animal researcher, but that completely changed once i got a little older and found out some harsh truths about that line of work. You wouldn't want to throw everything away just to find you had made a big mistake that you cant take back do you?

I'm disappointed in you OT, the poll is tied and the majority of the posts seem to be saying drop out atm. While it is possible that you can succeed in life even after dropping out of High School, it's not likely. There's a reason the term "High School Dropout" is said in a bad way the majority of the time it's said. People, Collages, jobs, careers, take you a lot less seriously when you couldn't make it through High School. Why should you make the job or position, when there's 30 other people that were at least able to make it through High School. High School can be tough, on a educational and social level. But all of those issues give you experience for the rest of your life, also on a educational and social level. I think you'll regret it if you drop out.

Yea and ive babysat snakes before, doesnt mean i should drop out of uni and try to become a zoo keeper. Wouldn't the safe thing be to just finish highschool THEN try to become an artist. I know it might be boring but at least then you will have a back up if anything goes wrong AND you wont be disappointing your parents who seem to have worked very hard to get you a good education.

Finish school of course. Having that piece of paper is very important. Also, it'll make you seem like a quitter. Unless you have certain family circumstances that prevent you from finishing. You'll need a better excuse than "I was bored."

Finish high school. It opens up options and improves people's perceptions of you. Even if you do become a successful artist, it will probably be after several years of working other jobs you don't like, or don't want to advance in. That's just life.

As long as you get your GED, then move on to college, you'll be fine. Making it as an artist can be extremely difficult, even with a college degree. Personally, I feel that since you are a junior, it would probably be best to stick it out.

Ive wanted to be an artist for years. I practice every day for hours, i dont think its an out landish carrer to strive for, im not expecting to be rich, but with a job on the side, i think ill be fine. I really wanna persue this and with my grades, i dont think ill get a good job anyway. You ever hear of a mexican faling spanish? I dont have the motivation to go on in school. The only classes that i think i will need are, drivers ed, sociology, and art. So, ive basically been ditching exept for those.

Yeah, maybe you should give up, and go sell you art. But ask yourself this, who is gonna pay for your art supplies?

Finish school of course. Having that piece of paper is very important. Also, it'll make you seem like a quitter. Unless you have certain family circumstances that prevent you from finishing. You'll need a better excuse than "I was bored."

I dont think high school has anything to offer me, i wanna be an artist. unless i can take all art classes, then its more a waste of time. School is for learning and persuing your career right? well im not learning and im not learning jack **** about being an artist. I want a business manegment class, art, sociology, drivers ed and maybe a phsycology class only. But my school wont let me. I can always get my GED later if i need it.

[QUOTE="Thessassin"]

[QUOTE="Plzhelpmelearn"] I made money selling lemonade when I was younger, maybe i missed my calling :cry:Plzhelpmelearn

no thanks i tried that piss you were peddling! good thing you quit!

I did what I had to so I could increase profit margins. Have you ever had to explain to a board of investors and stock holders that you only made 50 cents all day?

Not to mention having to deal with customers like this

Definitely not the kind of job I would want
