TC.Im an Artist as well. Now basically most Artist are self taught. But school would help you learn more.So i would say stay in school.Learn about Color Theory, etc. But if you do drop out atleast take classes in a community college or something. Do you know what Conceptart.org is?I would advise you join it.After joining my art has improved alot.Practicing on Anatomy right now because of it and they are looking better and better.

As long as you get your GED, then move on to college, you'll be fine. Making it as an artist can be extremely difficult, even with a college degree. Personally, I feel that since you are a junior, it would probably be best to stick it out.Travo_basic

TC, Travo is an art teacher fyi.

Look. You're only 16 or 17. You may think you have life figured out by now, but you don't. You only have two years left to finish high school, and things can change in two years. Finish high school. If you still want to be an artist when you graduate, you can study art in college.

Finish High School. Nobody, not even a grocery store will give you an job advancement without your diploma. Unless you're already selling your painting at 500K, you better reconsider finishing HS. If you don't like school, that's tough. Just finish it out, then do your own thing. There are plenty of jobs that pay really well without going to college. An electrician, welder, or plummer for example. As for making a living as an artist...good luck.

This is what i wanna do, drop out and persue my art career, saves two years of boredom for me. I can also learn by watching cartoons. I know it sounds weird but, i dont just sit back and watch. (i draw cartoons btw) I look at the lines, curves, how to draw eyes, mouths, teeth, ect. And i take all the gathered art styles together to create my own. I take the best parts out by learning from professionals. So i can learn alot in 2 years without an art class, plus i can work.

You should finish high school unless you don't mind making minimum wage and living on the street for the rest of your life. Also, how do you plan to get into college without a highschool diploma?

Ill prolly go for another year after my senior year. Ive never been the best in school, but i feel like what im learning isnt important anymore. Its just extras. I try to be modest, but at 16 ive made money, some serious money for me too. it took me about 7 hours for 6 drawings, i made 450 off those. thats 64 dollars an hour.

If either A) You get a record deal or B) Win the lottery THEN you could drop out of school.

Having the attitude of "I can't do this, this is too hard," does not help you in any challenge you take on. You might not even be able to focus on your art and take your time. I could be wrong though.

What? Who bought them? You should scan em up and show GS. Here is a cookie, I didn't think you were already selling art, that is pretty cool.

I know its not the smartest thing to do, but its a chance ill willingly take to become an artist. When im 18, i wont have an opportunity to practice. im halfway through my high school career and unless i get to take classes that will actually help me with what i wanna be, i dont think i can stand it. In mexico once you are 16 (or junior year) you go start taking classes that will help you persue your career, so by the time you are 18, you are qualified for the most part. I think thats a perfect system, and if i could, id only be taking classes that will help me, the school seems to be against that, so honestly, if my parents really are against this, ill move to mexico and study art there for two years.

Well i dont have them anymore, but ill take a picture of some and try to post them. Image shack never worked for me for some reason. And its not like my parents or teachers bought them, there was an art show i guess, like an auction, but with art from ametures. And some random strangers bidded on them and i ended up with 450. Ive always been told i have a gift for art, im also pretty good at drawing carticatures (i forgot the name, but its where you draw people as cartoons). If i figure out how to upload pics on to gs, ill prolly make a thread for ot where you post your pics and ill draw you as a cartoon. No charge :P

So, im thinking of dropping out of high school, im a junior and i just cant take it. I wanna be an artist and im not learning anything about that in school, or anything that i willneed in life. Ive learned the basics. Eitherway, im gonna be an artist.I figure i can practice and work until i can go to college. I figure, with the variety of people on ot, ill be bound to get some good advice. I also wanna put out there that my family is very strict on this, i feel pressured to finish high school but i dont think i can. I feel like, if i drop out, they will consider me a faliure. It sucks, but it is my life. I havent discussed this with them yet. What do you think i should do? Also, please specify what option you chose and why you chose that.

kipohippo021

I didn't like High School but I never considered dropping out. It just didn't make any sense. What? Does the family need you to work on the farm? Have you stumbled upon a once in a lifetime billion dollar opportunity.

Because if i had nothing to do and i was just sick of school, i wouldnt drop out, but i have a budding career in art already and school isnt helping my career. Diffrent situations require diffrent actions. If i was making millions and was considering dropping out, would you still tell me to stay in school? Even if you want to be an artist, you really need to finish high school. A high school diploma shows that you have a basic marketable skill-set (and I do emphasize "basic"). You also generally need a HS diploma or its equivalent to go to college. You're really young now. Don't start closing off opportunities and erasing choices for yourself farther down the road. As difficult as high school seems now, it's harder to go back and finish later. Stick it out. Your future self will thank you in the end.

Dropping out is fine as long as you're planning on getting a G.E.D. As far as being an artist, most universities have degree programs in art, which would allow you to really hone your skills if you've got talent. On the other hand, it is VERY difficult to make a decent living as an artist, you might as well say you want to be an actor or standup comic.

I realize that it is cutting off my oportunities, but i have a career in art already. Ive made money. If i need to, ill get my GED, And i can always self teach myslef, im pretty good at that. College is just for the experience for me, not the diploma. School isnt helping me, i know dropping out is a gamble, but staying is suffering, i dont think i can pass my classes.

It doesn't matter if you have a budding career in art or not. You should still finish high school.

Also, I find your remark about other people not taking your future seriously quite comical, considering you don't seem to be taking your own future very seriously.

You can make a good living as a tatoo artist if you're really good and get lots of customers. Probably moreso if you open your own shop and have people working for you. But starting your own business requires you to work longer and harder than if you worked for someone else, and you run the risk of losing everything. If that sounds appealing to you, then by all means go for it.

Sure high school can be hard but is that really a reason to give up? I know going into high school, I can't have a lot of play time to be video gaming or posting on here, I will need be doing more homework and that is the thing, you have to start focusing more on your goals. Even though you may not be learning what you need to be learning, college (even though it seems way overpriced) the teachers there have great ideas and can help you more than high school teachers can. I really think dropping out would ruin what you want to do but that is just me. Do what you think is right then see how it affects other people. I am not trying to persuade you, I am just telling my opinion of what I think you should do... oh wait, that is persuasion.

[QUOTE="kipohippo021"][QUOTE="SolidSnake35"]Finish school... of course.The_Weird_Guy

Im really intrested, did you read the op? or just the title. Because if i had nothing to do and i was just sick of school, i wouldnt drop out, but i have a budding career in art already and school isnt helping my career. Diffrent situations require diffrent actions. If i was making millions and was considering dropping out, would you still tell me to stay in school? This is my future im talking about and id like for people to take it a little more seriously, id really like to hear your serious advice. :)

It doesn't matter if you have a budding career in art or not. You should still finish high school.

Also, I find your remark about other people taking your future seriously quite comical, considering you don't seem to be taking your own future very seriously.

Ive made money, and if i keep making that money, ill be doing better than anybody here. The thing is its not a stable career. But its what i love. Ive been thinking about this for a long time. Even if it dosent take off, i dont know what i would do after i graduate, id prolly work with my parents, managing, cutting and polishing. For a decent amount as well. My dad hopes for me to take over the business. I really should post some pics for you guys to see.

[QUOTE="Elraptor"]Even if you want to be an artist, you really need to finish high school. Your future self will thank you in the end. kipohippo021

He's just fishing for people to jerk off.

:? umm..... im not looking to become a male hooker....

I didn't say there would be masturbation and a transaction. Why is everyone so vulgar minded?

If you drop out you as a gamer will NOT happen next year.

If i had to choose between following my heart and doing what i love or gaming, id prolly choose drawing. This is my dream. Gaming can wait.

That's a pretty big judgment you are making. I would be willing to bet quite a few of the people who post here make a decent salary.

[QUOTE="kipohippo021"][QUOTE="UT_Wrestler"]Dropping out is fine as long as you're planning on getting a G.E.D. As far as being an artist, most universities have degree programs in art, which would allow you to really hone your skills if you've got talent. On the other hand, it is VERY difficult to make a decent living as an artist, you might as well say you want to be an actor or standup comic.UT_Wrestler
My cousin did it, although he draws Pr0n.... And hes 30, im 16 and im about as good, if not better than he is. There are more artists than actors, more than stand up comedians, but most dont have it as a career. I can also go into tatooing if all does not go well. Although ill need my GED for that. I think i can do it.

I know the ins and outs of starting and maintaining a business. My parents own a business, i know it takes suffering, we went weeks on ramen and beans. But, now we are prospering, we just got a wii, better internet, hd tv, we can afford the nice stuff now. Id love a tatoo business. Id love to work at one. I know its not gonna be like LA ink or whatever, my uncle owned one. He died tho.
