The following is courtesy of Box Office Mojo.com:

1District 9$37,000,000$37,000,000

2G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra$22,500,000$98,753,000

3The Time Traveler's Wife$19,205,000$19,205,000

4Julie & Julia$12,400,000$43,684,000

5G-Force$6,908,000$99,049,000

6The Goods: Live Hard, Sell Hard$5,350,000-$5,350,000

7Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince$5,155,000$283,893,000

8The Ugly Truth$4,500,000$77,502,000

9Ponyo$3,506,000$3,506,000

10(500) Days of Summer$3,025,000$17,955,000

Opening to rave reviews and made with a modest budget, District 9 has made back its production budget and taken the #1 spot on the same weekend with an estimated $37 million. I haven't had the chance to see it myself, but it does look interesting.

As far as the other new openings, The Time Traveler's Wife has placed third with $19.2 mil, Jeremy Piven's latest comedy The Goods landed at #6 with only $5.3 mil, the animated movie Ponyodid $3.5 mil and taken 9th $3.5 mil, and finally, Band Slam failed to both find the High School Musical audience it was looking for, and never cracked the top 10. Instead, it opened at #13 with only $2.2 mil.

Next Friday offers up Alexis Bledel in the comedy Post Grad, and Quentin Tarrintino's latest movie Inglourious Basterds opens. If neither choice appeals to you, now's a good time to catch up on whatever you missed this summer.

To think I only heard about it 2 days ago and I already want to see it really, really badly. How did I not hear about this movie sooner?

Great to see D9 got the $$$ it deserves.

What I don't is why sunday doesn't count? I always thought that weekend box office results meant the weekend.

Well, it's STILL sunday, you can't count today until it's done. Besides, These are the estimated totals; the official totals (including Sunday, I believe) won't be out until tomorrow.

For a blockbuster action movie, that's pretty weak for District 9. Ponyo is in there. I think it deserves more money. But I guess that's just what happens when Japanese animation in America. But overall, not bad. At least some people are seeing it. I'm very happy to see (500) Days of Summer still on the charts. It's by far one of the best movies of the year, and more people are seeing it.

The ad campaign for D9 was pretty bad, and it IS a R-Rated movie. NOW someone don't freaking quote me with people listing movies that are Rated R that did good in the box office.

OH YEAH, DISTRICT 9 IS BEAST.

not really, district 9 only cost 30 million to make, and in one weekend they made more then that, so its a succes, hell i wouldnt even call this movie a summer blockbuster action movie, its way more then that (though yes the action is badass)

Glad to see District 9 at #1, though it didn't have much competition this week...I'm looking forward to Inglourious Basterds.

That is quite good for a rated R movie which isn't even being shown in several theaters (at least around where I live). I saw it yesterday and it was quite good.

I don't call D9 an action movie because it is way more then that. It has almost every genre put in to one. :) No movie is like D9, that's what makes it so...GOOD.

Oh yes, I understand that. I'm not really debating the success of the film. I would just figure that for being the sci-fi action film it seems to be, more people would see it.

Between managing the video store where I work at full time, and saving the extra money I had for college, (I have the GI bill, but the money hasn't kicked in yet) I needed to stretch what loot I had. But on the plus side, I get all my rentals free, and I get to take home the new releases before the release dates.

I'd say the estimated 37million dollar opening weekend box-office take for District 9 is actually not weak but very strong. It opened up in less than 500-1000 theaters in comparison to the other blockbusters of the summer. Then you have to figure out from your area (easy enough to google) just how many screens per theater your particular multiplex showed District 9 on. In the Bay Area the film got at most two screens per theater it was being shown in and at some only one screen. The most screens it got was in a mulitplex which had 20 screens and it got three of them. Transformers 2 garnered an average of 4-5 screens in the area in its first weekend with some even showing it on 6-7 screens.

The fact that the film pretty much made back its film budget in its first weekend already makes District 9 a bonafide hit. If it's final box-office domestic take (US and Canada) even approaches 100million it'll be the biggest hit of the summer just in earnings-to-cost ratio. The media ad campaign for this film was reportedly less than 10 million and probably less as Sony decided to go viral in advertising the film. The major buzz and hype the film got after it's screening at this year's San Diego Comic-Con probably helped the film even get released on 3000+ theaters.

Yeah, its 37million opening weekend take is definitely not weak for a film made on a 30million dollar budget.

My post has less to do whether its a popular film or that it's a particular genre and more towards the business end of the equation. Something, I am sure, has gotten more than just the passing attention of every studio executive from Fox, Universal, Sony and Paramount as the numbers, acclaim and great word-of-mouth continues to roll in.

District 9 was quite possibly the worst movie I've ever seen. Terrible acting. Unlikeable main character. EXTREMELY shallow and PREDICTABLE plot. Instead of caring about any depth in story, just 'shoot 'em up at the end. Stupid and horribly scripted. If anyone wants to see real science fiction, watch 2001: A Space Odyssey, now that's a movie for the century. I can't believe people think District 9 is one of the best science fiction movies of the decade. So bad.

I truly and honestly believe that he may have a mysterious and rare form of dyslexia. Where he sees every film the opposite of what he actually thinks. So, from now on I think I'll just believe that when he pansandbashes a film then he actually loves it.When he loves a film he actually hates it.

You wouldn't happen to be related to Armond White? :)

Buck_Hotep

OMFG I hate Armond White. He rates every movie that is good rotten. I think I recall he gave fresh to Transformers 2 and rotten to Transformers 1. He gives Star Trek, D9, Wall-E, Up, etc. ROTTEN. The guy....UGH.

I truly and honestly believe that he may have a mysterious and rare form of dyslexia. Where he sees every film the opposite of what he actually thinks. So, from now on I think I'll just believe that when he pansandbashes a film then he actually loves it.When he loves a film he actually hates it.

Also, he was the first one to give rotten to D9 and Star Trek. There is definitely something wrong with the guy.

Really, if he doesn't see it within two weeks of release he should lose his FAU card. Lose it I say!
