Thor will now be female in the comics

Would they use the same name? I'm guessing Thor is a masculine name in Old Norse, but probably most people won't care about that.

My guess is the female Thor will be only temporary. It can garner some publicity and sell some comics and make the company some money, but in the long run fans will prefer the classic Thor. Just like with this new black-Hispanic Spider-man, it might be an interesting story in its own right, but when people think of Spider-man they're gonna think of Peter Parker, not Miles Morales.

I don't get why they're calling her Thor though. He's not called Thor just because he wields Mjolnir. Thor is his actual name.

Miles morales was only Ultimate Spiderman, which is a different universe from the regular comics. So peter parker is still spiderman

I hope they just mean that she is replacing thor rather than being an add on character to the same franchise like she-hulk, super girl, etc.

I guess it all comes down to how invested in the stories and characters these comic book fans have become.

Personally, I don't really care too much. Comics aren't something I've had any interest in for at least a decade. But I could possibly begin to understand how people who religiously follow the Thor comics would be, at the very least, a little jarred by this.

Thor is a nordic god and as someone with nordic familiy i am offended by this move, if they wanted to make comics more "female" friendly let Thor die and have his Sister or daughter take over, not change the gender of someone who clearly myth wise is a man.

This is a lack of respect of Norse traditions.

And? Thor and the norse mythology is a part of the nordic history and the mythology is even an established religion. So just because Marvel decided to use it in a comic, its not ok to show that big disrespect to a culture.

It's a fictional universe, not meant to be accurate to any religion. If you're too uptight to realize that, that's your problem.

And i dont give a rats behind that this is a fictional universe, all i care about is that Marvel should have shown some respect and just killed the character off and then made him a women., rewriting Thor as a women , and the coming out and say "this is Thor, not a sister, not a daughter, not a different character, this is Thor" is just disrespectful.

re: the bolded, the way Marvel usually does character changes is they bring in a new character and kill off/depower the old one, so it's not that Thor is getting a sex change it's almost certainly that a new character is becoming Thor. so you're getting mad for absolutely no reason here (instead of getting mad for basically no reason)

That is not what i get from Marvel's statement but as i said i couldn't give a rats behind about what marvel does after killing of the old Thor.

Also its not religious beliefs, its simply about respect for a culture and its history.

you're misinterpreting marvel's statements. it's just that this will be the new Thor character, not a side character in the thor stories. it doesn't mean marvel's rewriting its entire comic history or giving the current thor a sex change. it means the current thor will no longer be 'thor' going forward

I always got the impression Marvel was favored by women anyway.

I never read a Thor comic series as of yet because I've never enjoy it and never been interested in the concept. But what I do know, is that the Thor series is NOT an accurate representation or a depiction of the actually mythology. If anything, it's an adaption/ fiction based on it for the Marvel universe. It was never meant to be a one-on-one match with the mythology.

Standard Marvel comic changes. Not a single **** should be given.

Well, Thor is a masculine name, but more to the point it is Thor's ACTUAL name. So it's sort of insulting to have a female character (or ANY character) replace Thor and still be named Thor.

See, there's nothing wrong with another character (regardless of race) becoming the new Spider-Man. But notice...Spider-Man isn't the original character's name, his name is Peter Parker. "Spider-Man" is more of an alternate identity, an assumed role, or a title. That can be transferred over. But Note that the new Spider Man is named Miles Morales, not Peter Parker. He became Spider-Man, but he didn't become Peter Parker because he isn't Peter Parker. Sam Wilson can become Captain America, but Sam Wilson is not going to become Steve Rogers. That's the difference.

They dont do that in movies, Spiderman has been black for awhile now and the newest Spiderman movie is still featuring a white-guy and its not because they didn't have time to change that.

Ahh...well never was really passionate about the character in question. That being said, like somebody already mentioned, isn't Thor a male in the mythology side? Regardless I don't care, but create something new.

Spider-man is only black/latino in the ultimate universe. Which is not the main 616 universe, only Fury being black was taken from that universe. They mainly stick to elements from the 616 universe for the movies and it doesn't have to be in line with the current issues.

The only thing that bothers me is the name being associated with a female. I mean, I could never see myself calling a chick Thor unless its a very MASCULINE/MANLY looking chick...
