Would they use the same name? I'm guessing Thor is a masculine name in Old Norse, but probably most people won't care about that.

My guess is the female Thor will be only temporary. It can garner some publicity and sell some comics and make the company some money, but in the long run fans will prefer the classic Thor. Just like with this new black-Hispanic Spider-man, it might be an interesting story in its own right, but when people think of Spider-man they're gonna think of Peter Parker, not Miles Morales.

I don't get why they're calling her Thor though. He's not called Thor just because he wields Mjolnir. Thor is his actual name.

Miles morales was only Ultimate Spiderman, which is a different universe from the regular comics. So peter parker is still spiderman

So they actually gave her what's generally seen as a boy's name? or is it just that she is picking up the mantle of the God of Thunder?

I hope they just mean that she is replacing thor rather than being an add on character to the same franchise like she-hulk, super girl, etc.

It's odd how comic fans get more offended to changes of fictional characters than pagans do about the fictional characters being based on their gods.

Imagine how Christians would react if there was a superhero comic about Jesus.

I guess it all comes down to how invested in the stories and characters these comic book fans have become.

Personally, I don't really care too much. Comics aren't something I've had any interest in for at least a decade. But I could possibly begin to understand how people who religiously follow the Thor comics would be, at the very least, a little jarred by this.

"This is not She-Thor. This is not Lady Thor. This is not Thorita. This is THOR,” said writer Jason Aaron. “This is the THOR of the Marvel Universe. But it’s unlike any Thor we’ve ever seen before."

I assume its replacing Thor based on this.

Just an inconsequential and temporary event, just like comic book deaths.

Thoughts??

My first repsone was "Go adhead, Thor was not really that great of a hero anyway, maybe switching the gender will actually make me interested in reading those comics."

No word on what Marvel or Disney is going to do in the movies. I believe it will stay the same actor in the movies for now since I remember photos of them already filming in South Africa, unless they have changed the actor to an actresses without telling public( doubt it though).

I think this political correctness has to stop and Marval are shooting themselfs in the foot by doing this.

Thor is a nordic god and as someone with nordic familiy i am offended by this move, if they wanted to make comics more "female" friendly let Thor die and have his Sister or daughter take over, not change the gender of someone who clearly myth wise is a man.

This is a lack of respect of Norse traditions.

And? Thor and the norse mythology is a part of the nordic history and the mythology is even an established religion. So just because Marvel decided to use it in a comic, its not ok to show that big disrespect to a culture.

I approve of this if only to enjoy the manbaby tears. Nothing wrong with a different take on an established character.

Yeah I'm also pretty sure the Norse religion doesn't think Thor hung out with The Avengers, but I've never heard anyone complain about that

It's a fictional universe, not meant to be accurate to any religion. If you're too uptight to realize that, that's your problem.

Oh, you are pretty sure. thanks i wasn't sure if he actually did because i have no idea of what my own history and mythology is.

And i dont give a rats behind that this is a fictional universe, all i care about is that Marvel should have shown some respect and just killed the character off and then made him a women., rewriting Thor as a women , and the coming out and say "this is Thor, not a sister, not a daughter, not a different character, this is Thor" is just disrespectful.

But hey who cares and in the end **** everyone but ourselves , respect for others is just bad.

Jacanuk regardless of your religious beliefs this is a FICTIONAL portrayal of Thor. What part of fictional do you not understand. It's not meant to be accurate.

you're misinterpreting marvel's statements. it's just that this will be the new Thor character, not a side character in the thor stories. it doesn't mean marvel's rewriting its entire comic history or giving the current thor a sex change. it means the current thor will no longer be 'thor' going forward

I always got the impression Marvel was favored by women anyway.

i grew up with the mythology, and it's fucking stupid... But Marvel only does this shit because of the money. They clearly have no respect for the mythology

Well, they are business after all. So they have to care about money.

But Thor is a boy name in Scandinavia, they're just plain insulting us with this crap

I never read a Thor comic series as of yet because I've never enjoy it and never been interested in the concept. But what I do know, is that the Thor series is NOT an accurate representation or a depiction of the actually mythology. If anything, it's an adaption/ fiction based on it for the Marvel universe. It was never meant to be a one-on-one match with the mythology.

Standard Marvel comic changes. Not a single **** should be given.

Didn't Loki once turn into a horse and gotten pregnant?

Guys its not what you think.

Some woman is going to be taking over the hammer and be the God of Thunder. I'm almost sure it will be Valkyrie as "Thor"

There just doing for the HUGE HEADLINE - THOR IS A WOMAN!!!!

No, Thor will be depowered for a while and a story arc will be how he gets his power back.

Just like there going to "kill" Wolverine, he'll be gone for a bit and then return.

That's a pretty awesome design, but changes like this are just ridiculous.

Why are people acting as if this stuff hasn't happened before?

Were you guys mad all those times batman wasn't Bruce Wayne ?

When Barnes was Capitan America?

When Rhodes became iron man?

You guys do realize that this is just a character stepping into another characters shoes right?

Would they use the same name? I'm guessing Thor is a masculine name in Old Norse, but probably most people won't care about that.

My guess is the female Thor will be only temporary. It can garner some publicity and sell some comics and make the company some money, but in the long run fans will prefer the classic Thor. Just like with this new black-Hispanic Spider-man, it might be an interesting story in its own right, but when people think of Spider-man they're gonna think of Peter Parker, not Miles Morales.

Well, Thor is a masculine name, but more to the point it is Thor's ACTUAL name. So it's sort of insulting to have a female character (or ANY character) replace Thor and still be named Thor.

See, there's nothing wrong with another character (regardless of race) becoming the new Spider-Man. But notice...Spider-Man isn't the original character's name, his name is Peter Parker. "Spider-Man" is more of an alternate identity, an assumed role, or a title. That can be transferred over. But Note that the new Spider Man is named Miles Morales, not Peter Parker. He became Spider-Man, but he didn't become Peter Parker because he isn't Peter Parker. Sam Wilson can become Captain America, but Sam Wilson is not going to become Steve Rogers. That's the difference.

No problemo, i still think it's bs. They're just showing their ignorance. I now know why greeks get pissed when they get the mythology wrong

They dont do that in movies, Spiderman has been black for awhile now and the newest Spiderman movie is still featuring a white-guy and its not because they didn't have time to change that.

Ahh...well never was really passionate about the character in question. That being said, like somebody already mentioned, isn't Thor a male in the mythology side? Regardless I don't care, but create something new.

Spider-man is only black/latino in the ultimate universe. Which is not the main 616 universe, only Fury being black was taken from that universe. They mainly stick to elements from the 616 universe for the movies and it doesn't have to be in line with the current issues.

The only thing that bothers me is the name being associated with a female. I mean, I could never see myself calling a chick Thor unless its a very MASCULINE/MANLY looking chick...

I'm mostly struck by how much of the people who are up in arms over this stuff seem to not really be reading the current comic stuff.
