Some of this is legitimate, some sounds like stuff we should have done to begin with, and others sound like a history lesson. I'd say some of our greatest achievements would be harnessing electricity, the Industrial Revolution, video games (no matter how you look at it, they're American).

Athletes are a commodity and as such the price is set by the market system. Supply and demand. Teachers, policemen etc are paid by tax dollars. Bit of a difference there....no?

The problem there is the encouragement of an anti-intellectual culture. Oh, and the police, in a bit of honesty, have done harm to their image with some things. Remember the Rodney King riots?

Notice how most achievements are militaristic. To be fair, it was to be expected that bad things, like the dead civies in Iraq, would've happened at some point. In a way, that is what war is about but sometimes the end doesn't justify the means.

That's called capitalism and you support every day you get up and go to work, go to McDonald's, go to Wal-mart, and do anything else you do in America. If you don't like it I suggest you start supporting a different economic structure. But since the 1940's our government has done an ideal job of self preservation by concinving us socialism can't possibly work and ever since it's been our mission to free countries around the world from the tyrany of oppressive governments.

I dont wanna be an ass or anything, but defeating the Nazi's was not an American achievement (hell the Russians alone could have done it) it was the allies; A group achievement. Same can go the D-day landings, Americans didnt even get hte hardest beach to take and again that is a group accomplishment; the allies.

Considering how much our country has done as far as artistic achievements its a shame you didn't bother to include any intellectual achievements made by Americans.

Hell look what Americans have done for the entertainment industry...far too many achievements to ignore.

I don't know of anyone who loves to bash the UK from the states...and I've not seen much of it here. The TC does not speak for an entire country.

Edit: after reading his first line over for clarification...he WASN'T bashing the UK...simply stating a fact. The UK was powerful at the time.

They pretty much were at the time. Why should that make you angry. You have heard of the British Empire I assume.

That's still not much compared to the US bashing I see here....for all you know it was one guy with alts. Again...living in the US....the UK is liked....not disliked. ;)

UnknownSniper65

The problem is basically that American schools teach that they overcame a mighty empire; david and goliath and what not. European schools, on the other hand, teach that Britian was gripped in a huge war with france and simply didn't have the time or the resources to deal with America, thus they sent crap troops with crap leaders and after they were defeated, decided not to bother so they could focus on the larger war at home.

I'm not saying either is right or wrong at all; it's just a topic which will obviously cause upset whenever it's brought up. The european interpretation will offend americans, and vice versa.

If you ask me, i think America's greatest achievement - which was oddly left out - was realising that monarchies = fail, and that governments should always be designed to stop power lying with one individual. American federalism was way ahead of its time, and along with the british system of parliament, is easily one of the most imitated forms of government in the world.

It was an epic achievement. If you ask me, at least.

Lets see America's greatest achievements.

1) Iran-Contra Scandal

2) Operation Paperclip (Importing Nazi Scientists)

3) Faux War on Terror

4) $480 billion military budget, $18 billion education budget

5) No child left behind (Now even the slow kids can't fail)

6) Rendition Program

7) USA Patriot Act

8) First (and only) nation to use a nuclear weapon against an enemy

9) FOX

10) Electing George Bush, not once, but twice.

Yep... seems like you guys have accomplished a hell of a lot.

Lets see America's greatest achievements.

1) Iran-Contra Scandal

2) Operation Paperclip (Importing Nazi Scientists)

3) Faux War on Terror

4) $480 billion military budget, $18 billion education budget

5) No child left behind (Now even the slow kids can't fail)

6) Rendition Program

7) USA Patriot Act

8) First (and only) nation to use a nuclear weapon against an enemy

9) FOX

10) Electing George Bush, not once, but twice.

Yep... seems like you guys have accomplished a hell of a lot.

Why all the hate? :? No nation is perfect. Heck i could easily go make a top ten list of terrible things done by Australia, or Britain, or France or anywhere for that matter. It's the 4th of July however, and a thread intended to celebrate the good things. Would you go to your friend's birthday party and start ranting about what a terrible person he was? Heck no. Because there's a time and a place and that aint it.

Worst achievement:

Paying athletes millions of dollars while teachers, policeman and other professions get peanuts...

Whats wrong with athletes making that much money if the industry they work in makes so much?

They don't deserve it, simply.
