1. Defeat the Kingdom of Great Britain 1783 and gain independence - at the time; Great Britain considered most powerful nation on earth since the Treaty of Paris 1763.

2. Abolish slavery (eventualy)

3. Defeat seceding southern US states and fully Unite America as one nation - 1865

4. First and only nation (so far) to successfully land on the moon.

5. D - Day landings - jointly with British Empire/Commonwealth - 1944.

6. Achieve the most powerfull navy on earth, and global maritime domination - 1945 onwards.

7. With allies, defeat Nazi Germany.

8. With NATO nations, successfully avoid a third world war - ending the cold war.

9. Defeat Imperial Japanese navy - 1945.

10. Most powerful economic nation on earth.

And it was all going so well, until you guys invaded Iraq and murdered thousands of women and children for oil.

I wish the list was more light hearted than that.

I myself would move up 5, 7, and 9 into one that is #3, I think WWII is more important than the moon. Just remember that nearly 50% of this country was against the Iraq war at the start and a much higher percentage now. btaylor2404

I guess I need to make up for the 2 I dumped, I'll try to go positive: Civil Rights Movement (this could not happen in most countries without a war, we made it thru it), our Higher Education System. Yes our public schools are in shambles, but many of the best and brightest in the world come to the US for an education.

Its funny how Americans celebrate the 4tyh of July by doing every stereotypical American thing possible. Lets drive down somewhere, eat, get drunk and watch explosions! Yea! Explosions kick ass! Hey I've got an idea! Lets try out some of our explosives on a third world country to keep the military industrial complex happy!

Its funny how you're celebrating independance and freedom, while your current president has basically destroyed your constitution. So enjoy your meaningless holiday, as you are in America, there will be another one coming up shortly.

Here we go again... Educate yourself, the world is a better place without Houssein. Iraq's not getting carpet bombed, and it was never about oil (if it was, why's gas closing in on $5/gallon?). I'll admit it was a bad call claiming WMD's, but hindsight's always 20/20. Please do your homework before making such an insulting and misinformed statement.

Well.........we can agree that the start of The Simpsons decline is subjective and that sarcasm on the net should be accompanied by a sign because you can never be certain with some people.

That's all true, but...

1) The French helped America with that
2) Still had most of the slaves at one point
3) That's not really an acheivment...
4) Russia was the first country to actually get INTO space
5) The Americans just joined because of Pearl Harbour
6) No
7) Pearl Harbour again...
8) And looks like they'll start the Cold War again in a few weeks...
9) Because they didn't have any direct attacks on mainland America
10) I guess that's true
