Trump's offer for Islamic center site called a 'pathetic' PR attemptNew York (CNN) -- Donald Trump's offer to buy the lower Manhattan site where a Muslim group plans to build an Islamic community center is just a "pathetic" attempt to get publicity, said the lawyer for one of the land owners. Real estate mogul Trump made the offer Thursday in a letter to Hisham Elzanaty, an investor in the controversial Islamic center site. But Elzanaty does not consider Trump's proposal a real offer, attorney Wolodymyr Starosolsky said Thursday night.Owner of mosque site rejects Trump offerNEW YORK, Sept. 10 (UPI) -- A lawyer for one of the men involved in a controversial New York mosque says his client found an offer from Donald Trump to buy the site "laughable."Mosque Developer: Trump's Offer 'Cheap Attempt' At PublicityNEW YORK (CBS 2/WCBS 880) – The developer of the proposed Islamic center near the site of the World Trade Center is calling Donald Trump's offer to buy him out a "cheap attempt to get publicity." On Thursday, Trump said he wanted to buy the site on Park Place – for 25 percent above what the developer paid – as long as the mosque would be moved at least five blocks away from ground zero. In a letter, Trump said he made the offer "not because I think the location is a spectacular one (because it is not), but because it will end a very serious and inflammatory and highly divisive situation." The developer immediately rejected Trump's offer. ---------- tl;dr - The one possible solution anti-mosque supporters had was denied and ultimately laughed at. Yes, the owners LAUGHED AT six million dollars. This just keeps getting better. \o/ I know OT is bound to have a few thoughts on this.

aren't the people protesting the site as, "At Ground Zero," just using that phrase as cheap publicity?

I consider Trump's offer to be genuine...he can certainly and easily afford it.

Frankly, I believe he made the offer to try and defuse the situation for both sides.

I couldn't say, but offering a profit to the planners makes it a win-win for both sides. If they took the deal, they could still have their building done.

My take, he offers it to the Ground Zero memorial builders, or something to commemorate.

The only really dumb thing he did was mess up with his ex-wife.:P

This makes me wonder what the motives are for putting the mosque at ground zero? i mean trump offered a great deal to the owner, 25% above what he paid is an amazing return, he could have kept the 25% return and build the mosque a measly 5 blocks away and everything would have been solved. i believe he purposely wants the mosque close to ground zero as a symbol of islamic dominance, like when you conquer new land you plant a flag. in any case they should have the right to build the mosque as long as they know building one there will have serious backlash to muslims in NY.

Personally I think both sides are being idiots. The people against the mosque fail to realize that Islam didn't cause the 9/11 attacks, a bunch of deranged men did. That's like blaming Christianity as a whole for the acts of a few deranged priests who decided to molest young children. Sure you can blame the catholic church for protecting these deranged men, but the Church is not the religion. On the flip-side, the people who want to build a mosque at ground zero are being idiots too. Just because you have a right doesn't mean you have to abuse it. It's like the guy who wanted to burn the Koran. Sure he had the legal right to do so, but that was just tasteless. Same here, the builders should try to be sensitive to what occurred. Are you telling me they can't build a mosque somewhere else? A mosque located somewhere else wouldnt be as holy or something? this is NY, not Jerusalem. Just build it somewhere else and save a lot of people a lot of grief.

Yes, 25% is a huge profit margin. I would take that deal in a heartbeat.

or maybe the owners are seroius and want a community center actually in the local community, hard to believe isnt it. and not everyone caresabout the money maybe it isnt about money for them. also why 5 blocks when thers a proper mosque 4 blocks from ground zero? p.c. the mosque shouldnt be moved, moving it is a sign of giving into extremists and will set a bad precedent over future mosques anywhere in the usa.

I'm not entirely sure what his motives were. If he was merely trying to diffuse the situation and allow the builders to make a profit and simply build elsewhere, then I have no problem with it. If he opposed the building on principle and was trying to prevent it because he didn't want it built near where the WTC was, then I agree that it's pathetic.

Building an Islam community centre is the same as burning someone's Holy Book as a public display?

Maybe he doesn't need it, but he is a publicity hound.

Now, for the love of honesty, can we please stop calling this thing the "Ground Zero Mosque"? It is not a mosque and not at Ground Zero. It's blocks away. You can't even see one site from the other.

As seemingly proven in the past, not very many people know what you're talking about if you call it anything different. It hurt me to do it, but I digress.

Okay...? There's a Church right there....Now if he was coming from New Jersey for the sole purpose of attending mass that would be different. But still, not everyone will do that, and there's already a Mosque 18 minutes away from this one.

Wherever he moves it in New York City it will attract Non Muslims...

dont worry if they are doing this to piss off new yorkers, im pretty sure they have a couple of ak 47's rpgs, and explosives to defend themselves ;)

[QUOTE="wstfld"] Millions of people commute to Manhattan everyday for work. My boss goes to mass every Thursday after work and he lives in Jersey. wstfld

Okay...? There's a Church right there....Now if he was coming from New Jersey for the sole purpose of attending mass that would be different. But still, not everyone will do that, and there's already a Mosque 18 minutes away from this one.

The number of existing mosques is a terrible argument.

I'm not arguing the number of existing mosques, I'm arguing the proximity of Mosques. There's one 18 minutes away, the Closest Muslim population is like...30 or more minutes away.

[QUOTE="wstfld"][QUOTE="Snipes_2"] Why wouldn't he sell it and move to a better spot with more Muslims in the area?Snipes_2

You do know there are 10s of thousands of Muslims living in Manhattan, right?
