UK Islamic cleric bans women from touching 'penis-shaped' foods to avoid 'sexual thoughts'

An Islamic cleric in Britain has banned women from touching 'penis-shaped' foods such as bananas or cucumbers, in order to avoid any 'sexual thoughts'.

According to a report by el-Sawsana news, the unnamed sheikh said that if women wish to eat these food items, a third party, preferably a male relative, should cut the items into small pieces and serve.

In a story reported on Egyptian news website Bikya Masr, the cleric said that these fruits and vegetables 'resemble the male penis and could arouse women or 'make them think of sex.'

Carrots and courgette are also added to the list of forbidden foods for women, the Daily Mail reports.

When asked 'how to control women when they are out shopping for groceries and if holding these items at the market would be bad for them,' the sheikh said that this matter is between them and God.

Answering another question about what to do if women in the family like these foods, the sheikh advised the interviewer to take the food and cut it for them in a hidden place so they cannot see it.

According to the report, the opinion has stirred a storm of anger among Muslims online, with hundreds mocking the cleric.

One reader said that these religious 'leaders' give Islam 'a bad name' and another saying he should quit his post immediately. (ANI)

I've read some pretty dumb things from extreme religious/sexist people, but seriously? I'm not sure what kind of magical food he's talking about that upon touching it makes a woman think of sexual things, but I'd like to know where to get some.

I think this cleric seems to have lost touch with reality (and found touch with cucumbers, courgettes, carrots...)

I dont know why so many restrictions...specially for women..I dont think, a woman can think of stuff like this....while having bananas or cucumbers....all these restrictions makes islamic women....different from a society..as a whole.....

The Daily Mail is a right wing, immigrant hating tabloid paper that usually sensationalises stories out of original context. I wouldn't assume that anything they say is entirely true.

I think Islamic Clerics are fascinating just because unlike other religious leaders and political figures, they don't move forward with the times. No, they go WAY the f*** backwards.

While people like the Pope and Dalai Lama embrace societal change and cultural reforms and twitter to try and stay in, these guys are doing the opposite and urging people to do the stupidest things.

I don't want to insult another culture, and I'm all for Islam and people who believe in it, but the clerics who say things like that are idiots, and if they find p**** shaped foods to be a problem, then they spend WAY too much time thinking about d*** shapes.

In all fairness, its not like THE leader or main figurehead is saying this stuff, but its really dumb that people have to report this as news when its just some crazy guy trying to get all this to happen pretty much.

I feel like it should be ok for them to not read into it so literally and stay stuck in the past.

At the very least, there are some changes happening that don't necessarily break any of the more ambiguous rules in Islam, and these Sheik guys are just crazies no one has to listen to anyways.
