[QUOTE="ColdRush88"]I certainly wouldn't want somebody I don't know coming to tell me how to live my life. It's my life and I can live it how I want. And I think I'm not alone in thinking this. Oleg_Huzwog

Once again, NOBODY is suggesting we do this. Interact =/= Interfere.

But it does. You can't "interact" and give them modern technologies of any kind without interfering with their society. If we gave them even one modern device like a gun, it wold be tremendous interference..

Yeah stop playing God, leave evolution and and themselves to create whatever paths they take... We did it, we didn't have some guy pop in every now and again and say "eh do this instead" "use this tool instead of that one" "hey the wheel should be this shape".

Rhazakna

To clarify: When I say "interfere", I mean "undesirable meddling in the affairs of others". Emphasis here is on the word "undesirable". Given that, I maintain that Interact =/= Interfere.

Going with the gun example that MrGeezer orginally brought up and you repeated, an increased success rate in hunting is an exmaple of desirable meddling, i.e. not interfering.

But shouldn't that be THEIR choice?

If they WANT rifles, air conditioning, and HDTVs, then who are we helping by telling them "sorry, but you can't have it."

Yes, it's their society and they should be able to live as they want to live. But part of being able to live how they want to live is the option of CHANGING how they live. If you deny them the very option of changing, based solely on the notion that their civilization should not change, then how is that NOT dictating their way of life?

I feel like an idiot.

For some reason when I saw the title of this topic, my first thought was "How the hell did an African tribe get access to Amazon.com?"

We should capture them and paint them blue. ^_^SolidSnake35

Was that supposed to be a joke? If so then it was by far the most unfunniest thing I've ever heard, I don't know if you were trying to be funny, but if you was then sorry man/FAIL to make anyone laugh.

Just leave them alone ffs, there's little difference in offering them change and forcing them to change - either way they are going to change, if I offer a tramp some money he'll take it, if I offer a screwdriver to a guy trying to bang a screw into a piece of wood with his face he'll take it. What are you trying to achieve by trying to change them... but not forcing them to change... If i go to there tribe and offer them change and 1 out of 50 people say "yeah i'll take that gun/weapon" then that IS forcing change because now that person has new technology and is better equipt than his enemies/fellow tribes people... forcing them to either copy him or to try and improve their own technology. By not forcing change you're offering change to the people who want it and expecting it to not have an effect on the rest of the people there?

There's a HUGE difference between offering change and forcing change. Are you honestly saying that offering a screwdriver to the guy using his face is the wrong thing to do?

Kinda like the Survivorman episode in the amazon where Les had to turn around because he was heading too deep into "hostile native" territory. but, whatever, they're doing fine and are probably more healthy than most of us here, so good for them.

I would really like to learn more about their culture. And perhaps we should interact with them to show them some of the great things that they are missing (Music, Art)

I read the article about it in the newspaper. Pretty interesting story, it'd be cool to try to interact with one and see what they're like.

Once again, how is change for the better a BAD thing? If they WANT screwdrivers and power tools, how is it a bad thing for us to give them power tools? WHY are you people so insisting that their culture remains EXACTLY like it is now? We aren't talking about eradicating a species of bird, we're talking about giving a society a choice in whether or not they want to benefit from our way of life. What, do you guys think that the "savages" are too stupid to make wise choices regarding their own culture? Do we have to protect the poor little primitive people from the benefits of modern science? Come on, we're talking about PEOPLE here. Not chimps, not monkeys, not wolves. Can't they decide how they want to live without the rest of us deciding that they're too stupid to be given the opportunity to make such decisions?

That's really interesting stuff. Too bad the pictures are from so far away. It'd be nice to see them up close. I also doubt the claim that they have no contact with the outside world... they're all clearly staring at the plane taking pictures. :P

Leave them be. They'd be happier. All this machinery we have doesn't make us more free. It just makes us think we need it to be happy and productive...it's a lie. This machinery...this accumulation of material possessions...big hdtv's, computers, et cetera enslaves us. I'd be happier just tilling the soil of Gaia and collecting berries.

So...why are you VOLUNTARILY sitting in front of a computer typing messages on an internet discussion board?

I mean, I see people talking all the time about how horrible our way of life is. But there are a lot of wilderness areas around. Anyone who REALLY wants to can choose to pretty much just disappear.

Have you ever ACTUALLY lived outside of modern society? Have you ever actually been FORCED to live in the woods with the threat of disease, starvation, and dehydration being constantly an issue? Have you ever actually had to spend all day looking for food?

Of course, these guys probably DO get along "just fine". They've probably been around for a long time. And if left alone, they'll probably be around for a long time. But that doesn't mean that they don't have problems.

You know, people didn't used to have cars. We got along fine without cars, and we'd be doing fine if cars were never invented. Still, cars caught on because they're pretty ****ing cool. We didn't used to have cell phones or the internet. Televisions are also a pretty recent invention. Do we NEED them? Of course not. But they're awesome and we want them, so we have them. In any case, if modern technology is THAT awful, why are you sitting here in an air-conditioned building making posts on the internet using a personal computer, and talking about how you wish that you were living in the woods covered with ticks and having to eat beetles and lizards? If that's REALLY how you want to live, you don't have to travel very far to live like that.

Now, that's not to crap on these guys' culture. I'm sure that they for the most part probably DO like their culture and their way of life. But EVERYONE has problems that they'd like solutions to. If a few chainsaws could make life a little bit easier for these guys, while still allowing them to retain their cultural identity, then what is the problem?

It's true. They are probably happier the way they are now. Consumerism and materialism are some of the biggest issues in America today. People think they need to have more to be happy - yet they still are empty and end up buying more and more and more. It lays waste to the environment and it's just a bad mindset to be in altogether.

THere are plenty of woods that way. ------>

Yet, for some reason, I keep on hearing people whining about how awful their lives and our society are, right after they've bought the hot new videogame and then logged onto the internet.

If it's THAT bad, the woods are right over there. ---->
