Yeah, but this is Congress. We probably don't even hear half of their crazy proposals and introduced bills. I have a hard time believing a bill such as this could get 2/3 majority vote.

Nonetheless...that does not mean it won't happen someday. Last admin went against the Constitution quite a bit and this looks like more of the same.

I can agree with that. While the bill does appear to be a step towards more of the same from last administration, I just hope people don't start jumping the gun and shouting "impeach Obama." We had enough of that with crazy 9/11 conspiracy theorists during the Bush White House. That being said, if by some crazy chance this bill does get passed, then we've got a big problem.

Jesus christ. Why can't the government just let us live. Our founding fathers would never have stood up to this. Unfortunately we don't have a new world to run off too.Coffee_Blade
You mean the same founding fathers who passed the Alien and Sedition Act and the same founding fathers who bought 828,800 square miles with the power of the presidency, even though the president has no authority to purchase land? Let's not act like our founding fathers never engaged in questionably unconstitutional behavior.

People honestly expected something different? Honestly? Did nobody pay any attention to the man and his policies and voting records during the election? And now people are surprised. . .

I don't think you can use the passing of the Patriot Act to support the claim that this "Cyber Security Act" has a viable chance of being passed, mainly because the political environment in which the Patriot Act was passed in was much different than the political environment of today. The Patriot Act was passed a month after 9/11 and people (including politicians) were scared and many were thinking irrationally. In such a climate where national security appears to be at risk it is much easier to pass a bill that claims to protect national security without much political blow back and overall resistance as one would receive during a time when national security is not at (as much) risk.

I think its a very small price to pay for the incredible amount of security it can provide our country, i dont see how you can have a problem with it unless your planning terrorist attacks, or hacking the governments databases. You have to realize that as technology gets so advance and threating, you cant keep taking advantage of it without some sort of fail safes.

The people who voted for him just because he was black, you deserve it. McCain wasn't a better candidate and it was probably a lesser of two evils but... I pity you people who didn't want Obama(nor McCain). Thank god I'm not American...

The Cybersecurity Act of 2009 introduced in the Senate would allow the president to shut down private Internet networks. The legislation also calls for the government to have the authority to demand security data from private networks without regard to any provision of law, regulation, rule or policy restricting such access.

We wanted change. We got change.

Like I said during the campaign. id take 4 more years of Bush rather than Obama.

I don't really see how you can reasonably make that assumption. Actually, let me back up for a second. It is likely that the Obama administration has requested that a bill be proposed that deals with the internet vis a vis national security. In fact, according to the website eWeek, the White House cooperated with the crafting of this bill, although I wished that the author of the article named what media sources he was referring to. But let's be perfectly clear on this; there is nothing to suggest that the Obama Administration supports the provision that allows the president to shut down private internet networks, and there is certainly nothing that suggests that the Obama Administration wrote said provision. Support for a bill =/= support for every single provision in said bill, especially this early in the legislative process.

This is ridicuolous, how much power this man is claiming. It is ruining the very basis of our country, it's constiuton. It only takes one man. I love my country, and this man is ruining it.

I'm really tired of people worshiping the founding fathers as if they were almost gods, and trying to push the idea that they campaigned for uncompromisable liberty and freedom. The founders were not gods, they were men; in fact they were worse than men; they were politicians. And they didn't campaign for uncompromisable liberty and freedom. Many of the founders owned slaves. John Adams signed the Alien and Sedition Act, that was passed by a congress that was controlled by Alexander Hamilton's federalist party, which made it illegal to defame the president. Thomas Jefferson purchased 828,800 square miles from the French. Where exactly in the constitution does it say that the president has the right to engage in such a deal? Yes the founders were insightful philosophers, but they also doubled as politicians, and politics often reveals one's own contradictions. I seriously doubt that the founding fathers, at least the one's who held public office (except maybe Franklin), would be surprised by this bill (a bill that has to be voted on by 535 people. No one man doesn't have the power to pass a law).

Wow see what happens when a country has parties, This is why the founding father said let there be no political parties, MAn America is not very smart. Sadly i live in this country and most of the people have no clue what the government is really doing. I will not be surprised if this bill passes because Americans are so lazy they will just go with it. Republican or Democrat they all are at fault. Now im not taking the blame of of Obama because he has screwed us over many times already and people just dont care. WAKE UP AMERICA LOOK WHATS GOING ON AROUND YOU STOP BEING LAZY AND DO SOMETHING ABOUT THIS CRAP!

There have been more important things going on in the world this week than a bill being introduced in the Senate. If you want to read the bill in its entirety, here you go.

It really doesn't surprise me that this is even being considered..it shouldn't. The internet is one of the main forms of communication now and the government could shut it down to get more control over the people. Luckily we still have the second amendment, right?
