Not many people seem to realise that Iran has a huge and well equipped army, not to mention a means of arming every single citizen. People who flippantly say "yeah let's invade Iran" must indeed think it's exactly like Iraq or Afghanistan. It aint, people. They have tanks. They have an air force. They have an army.

Of course they have a military. Much better than Iraq did back in '03. However, it's still based on old Soviet technology. Their tanks would be nothing compared to an M1A2. The US would gain air superiority (superior Western aviation, carriers). Plus, we have "superweapons" (to use RTS terms) like MOABs and the B2 bomber. Then we'd also have NATO allies with Eurofighter Typhoons, Leopard 2s, Challenger 2s, etc.

The best of the west vs. an army based around export versions of old Soviet stuff.

I have a feeling this is just a story to get Iran and it's supposed nuclear weapons in the spotlight to try to turn public opinion for a war on Iran.

PS: If they do declare war Bush would have started 3 wars in one presidency, impressive.Big_player

Well, I agree that totally pulling out right now is far from the best solution. Problem is that the fanatics there are so devoted and the situation is so out-of-hand that there's no telling how much longer it could go on. Violence has gone down recently though, so let's hope this trend continues. It'd be great if this were to end in a victory, but I'm not sure how likely that is. I haven't been keeping up with the latest on it though.

And yeah, that was a bit of a silly thing of me to say. No leader in their right mind would invade Iran knowing that they have a more powerful conventional force (though still based on old Soviet stuff) and more importantly, what happened with Iraq.

Well recently the US Marines have handed over the Anbar Province to the Iraqi Security forces. This region was one of the more troublesome regions, and the hand over signifies that the Iraqis are beginning to get a handle on the situation. So I hope that this will help draw down tensions. I just don't feel that Obama has the right idea. McCain knows what the troops are dealing with over there, and his statement of "100 years" while exagerated, was in the right context. (Look at Korea, we've been there 50 years now.) We may be in Iraq for a while, but I think that the days US troops engage in large scale direct combat is numbered. I think you'll see a trend of the US providing logistical and fire support for the Iraqis.

As for Iran, I'm not worried really about their conventional ground forces. The Iraq War taught the world that trying to meet the US military in open conventional combat is suicide. However the US military is now, quite obviously, vunerable to a prolonged terror/insurgent campaign and I think that that is something the Iranians would use to full advantage.
