What are the albums that you anticipated a lot, only to disappoint you?

Mine is 808's and Heatrbreak by Kanye West. I was starting to think he was decent, then he dropped that digital load on ears everywhere. I just remember thinking "This is the weakest hip hop album ever!" It was all voice modulation and crappy rhymes. Turned me off Kanye totally.

What album inspired a similar response for you?

I picked up Akimbo's Jersey Shore album last night and it is good, but like many concept albums it's...Not as good as their normal material.

Dark Side of the Moon by Pink Floyd.

Everyone kept talking about how awesome they were and I thought listening to the album would be awesome. Sadly, it made me fall asleep.

Bruce Springsteen - Born to Run. I love 70's music but haven't been able to get into this. Super underwhelming.

Slaughterhouse by Slaughterhouse and Recovery by Eminem come to mind. Neither one of them are awful, but both could have been so much better than they are.

Edit: If we're including albums that are universally regarded as cIassics, I'd have a really long list. :P

I honestly think Pink Floyd in general is boring.

The amount of influence Dark Side of the Moon has had on music is negligble when I find even the band's work in general boring.

Some albums are:

Pink Floyd - The Dark Side of the Moon

My Bloody Valentine - Loveless

Joy Division - Unknown Pleasures

Fates Warning - Awaken The Guardian

I understand these are heralded as important and highly influential albums but neither did anything for me.

Well, you're entitled to your opinion, but this is really equivalent to saying that you find Mozart boring. It makes you sound deliberately contrarian or otherwise just plain ignorant about music because that is a seminal work and for a reason.

Erm, that second point didn't make any sense. I mean I'm willing to understand people have different tastes in music, but saying "The influence it's had on music is negligible when I find even the band's work in general boring." Is pushing it. Unless you mean to say that you find it boring and therefore it's impact on music dosn't really matter to you, but the way you worded it would suggest the former.

"Alexisonfire" and "Watch Out!" by Alexisonfire
---> Everyone keeps going on about how good they are. And sure, especially for their self-titled album, being 17 when they made it, it's impressive, but I find the singer's vocals screechy and boring (on most songs; there's of course songs like "Water Wings"), and the instrumentals (even though I like them) aren't enough to cover up for it.
I haven't listened to "Watch Out!" over a few times, so maybe it could grow on me
"Repeater" by Fugazi
---> I can see the appeal in it, but even though I keep hearing that their an awesome band and such.... I just found the music unenjoyable. The type of music that I can't see something that I specifically dislike in it (though, even though I'm pretty accepting of sketchy vocals, the vocals were abysmal, and there seemed to be a bit too much repetition overall), and usually like the genre, but just can't enjoy the sound.

When I tried to listen to Them Crooked Vultures
---> Similar effect as when listening to Fugazi, except maybe to a greater extent (minus the sketchy vocals and such of Fugazi). I listened to it, could see the talent/appeal/enjoyability... I became agitated as I listened through the songs :?

I'm not assuming anything, I'm just stating that you have an opinion that is beyond the pale. If someone stated that they believed Mozart was a crappy composer, or that Freddie Hubbard was a bad trumpet player, I'm going to have a very hard time taking anything else that person says seriously.

It's absolutely the same. Mozart's work covers such a range that making a blanket statement like that would be a crass display of ignorance or deliberate contrarianism.

If you were to say that you had heard the vast majority of his music and didn't like any of it in any setting on any day, I'd say you would have to be a fairly simple minded person indeed. This would be different from ignorance however, which is what I am assuming because I find the first scenario very unlikely.

How can you possibly dislike an entire form of music that is at the core of the development of Western music and civilization? I have to assume you just haven't heard much of it and have a generally limited knowledge about all forms of music.

Incorrect. In fact, I've taken a specific cIass on the evolution of music, which encompassed music styIes from around 1400 to present, and thus had a fair share of cIassical music. And it's quite easy for me to dislike an entire form of music - it just doesn't appeal to me, whatsoever. Furthermore, opinion on whether or not I find something enjoyable to listen to has absolutely nothing to do with it's significance in the development of modern society. Those are two completely unrelated ideas...

There aren't too many albums that really disappointed me. Day & Age by The Killers wasn't as good as I expected, but I still really like it. Far by Regina Spektor was a pretty big letdown, though.

As for this "ignorance" debate going on in this thread, people like different kinds of music. Don't be so serious about it. :P
