The idea of religion plays a role in life whether you are religious or not. It has influenced policies of many civilizations, and has been used as a reason or justification for many historical events. What would happen if humans did not invent the idea of God? How different would the world be? Would their be mass chaos, or would the human race be more advanced because there would be no moral barrier to anything we do?

That question is impossible to answer. I would think that cultural development would be significantly different, though.

Ok i'll bite. In all honesty I think we would be way more advanced morally and technologically due to not being force fed our lives ie - be good, die and go to heaven. Ever since atheism and god being a small part of peoples lives technology has advanced and so has morales.

Yes, I think you are correct. But what do you think would be different about our culture?

Everything. Art, literature, monuments, traditions. The pyramids were made for the Pharaohs, who were considered gods; they probably wouldn't exist. Many major works of art (such as The Last Supper). The entire Vatican (and pretty much everything in it). The holidays. Several empires would probably never have risen to power. Everything would be radically diffferent. . .I would think. But like I said, we simply can't know.

Sorry, your post fails. I did read the topic title, hence the sarcastic answer. Good job.

I understood where the TC was getting at though. I just didn't want to miss out on making fun of the topic title.

But you are ignoring thousands of years of history. Who would stop the burial of women? Who would stop infanticide? Who would stop the trading of women?

Good response. Do you think that the absence or replacement of such important cultural monuments and traditions would be beneficial to our species?

There have, probably, always been alot of atheists. It's just that today you can freely admit to it without being tortured and butchered (in western countries, at least).

Not necessarily encourages, but removes moral boundries that hinder progress, ie. stem cell research.

How so? Curiosity, the quest for knowledge, is part of human nature. In fact, we were so curious about the sun, moon, and stars that we declared them Gods. Until, that is, our curiosity of the cosmos led us to create telescopes.

Religion is the cause of most wars. No one would know he disappeared, as no one knows for sure he's real.

If the whole concept never existed, we may have been smarter. Or we would have no motivation to learn or something of the sort.

It would advance a lot slower. Religion is what forbid us to commit infanticide, religion united clans that would kill each other if we crossed their territory. Religion overall made us much more socially advanced.

I can't agree with you that religion made us more socially advanced. Humans are social creatures with or without religion. In the absence of religion, I find it hard to believe that we still would not develop language and social ties with others of the same species. This is evident in many wild environments.
