If Jesus Christ Superstar was an accurate depiction of his life, he was pretty cool.

Really good at hitting the high notes, too.

First off there was no man named Jesus. His name was Joshua and if you don't even know that than what do you really even know?

There is a very compelling debate about which came first, Gnostic Christianity or Literalist Christianity...

Once again i'm sure 98% of christians don't even know what that means... such a knee jerk religion based on misinformation, embarassing really.

I'm curious as to where you got that little factoid.

He was a man who had extremely high moral standards for the time that fell victim to crazies around him.

I believe that he was two men. 1) An actual living Jewish person who did good things and most likely was a self-proclaimed messiah and 2) the posthumously apotheosized founder of Christianity. I very much highly doubt the actual "Jesus" who lived was anything like he is described in the Bible. Considering that most religious texts never report actual history of events and prefer to create largely over-blown myth and legend to further cement the validity of the person at the centre of the myth and create a more sound parabolic and metaphorical ways of delivering a moral message (and that not even 5% of the Bible is about Jesus).

Just like Shakyamuni Buddha's life was recounted in the Pali Canon. It may have happened, but as far as the texts are concerned, it most likely did not happen that way and was merely reported to happen that way for mythological effect. Its an almost universal aspect of religion. Defunct or living.

He was a real dude and from the sounds of it a pretty nice guy, however I don't personally believe that he ever made claims to be the messiah. Those were attributed to him by later people. For one, they're not at all consistent with his approach; you can't be humble one moment then proclaim to be the saviour of all mankind the next. It doesn't make sense. They likely came from Paul, whose evangelical work defined what Christianity was more than Christ himself did. I think there is a lot of historical relevance in the fact that the Gospels were written AFTER Paul.

Let's think it through logically. We know through historical proofs and historians that a popular man named Jesus of Nazareth did in fact exist. He was crucified, then the rest gets sketchy historically speaking.

Now we could say maybe he was just crazy. If he was crazy why did so many people follow him. He would have shown signs of being crazy and people would not have given up their lives to follow and believe in him.

Now we could say he was a liar. Why kind of person is a good enough liar to put on a 3 year ruse that ends in one of the most excruciating tortures, and deaths. would he have stood by his beliefs after all he had to go through.

So logically he was telling the truth, there is a small chance that one of the other things could have been a possibility but it's small.

You know, the problem with your discussion of whether or not he was crazy (and, for that matter, basically your entire "argument") is it could be applied to other alleged prophets of major religions. >_>

Jesus most likely existed and was a good man with good teachings, but nothing more.

But you can only choose the last really successful prophet which is Muhammad. And Prophet Muhammad accepted all the other founders like jesus and moses as prophets of God so you can only follow Islam with that example. Many muslims actually present this sort of argument as "strong" reasons to believe in God.

Interesting argument but it kinda falls flat when the Quran claims to be the absolute moral guidance and yet allows sex with slaves...

The Old Testement is not much better, and the New Testement still advocates eternal torture. Moral giudance is not a strong argument for any of those religious texts.

Well, none of your poll options really fit my answer, so I didnt vote. Anyway, I think Jesus had a bunch of good ideas in terms of how to live life and treat others. Was he a prophet? Nah. Was he the Son of God? I dont think so.

Surah 23. Al-Muminun (The Believers)

1. The believers must (eventually) win through,-

2. Those who humble themselves in their prayers;

3. Who avoid vain talk;

4. Who are active in deeds of charity;

5. Who abstain from sex,

6. Except with those joined to them in the marriage bond, or (the captives) whom their right hands possess,- for (in their case) they are free from blame,

Sura 4:24 says: And forbidden to you are wedded wives of other people except those who have fallen in your hands (as prisoners of war) . . .

So even married slaves are allowed, that is just sad and I am an ex-muslim. You might want to read up on your own religion...

It means that you can marry slaves if you want to. Slavery was slowly abolished in Islam, that's why there are verses like these.

I belive a Person by the name of Jesus Christ may have been born.

However, I don't believe he is the son of god, I just think he learned tricks. He was just a magician, and no one happened to catch on to his tricks, because people weren't exposed to stuff like Criss Angel today. Back then, almost everything was a miracle.

That's my belief, I could be wrong. But I don't believe in a god, so its kind of hard to believe that someone could be a son of a god.

Christ was not his last name. The word Christ comes because Jesus was thought of as the Christ. He was born Jesus of Nazareth. Jesus was a really well used name durign those days. More than likely there were a few of them wandering about.

Well there has been historic evidence of him existing, the fact the dating system uses BC and AD should say something about that :P. Whether he did what they say he did or didn't is another thing, I don't think someone would have an entire book written about them if they were BSing everything they did.

So, do you believe that the king and queens of old were descendant of god? Do you believe that the pharaohs were also gods in the flesh of a human? I mean, they had monuments made for them.

Well the pharaohs had things called slaves. And people did think during the Dark Ages that kings and queens had a closer relation to God than they, the peasants, did.

lol wut? Where does it talk about marriage with slaves? :|

If it was talking about marrying them then it wouldnt mention slaves at all cuz it's no different then. And what is "free from blame" supposed to mean? It is very clearly giving you the permission to have sex with your slave whether she likes it or not!

And why even keep a slave? Why not ask muslims to stop keeping any slaves? I mean the whole of muslim arabs gave up alcohol in a day when the revelation came of alcohol's prohibition...

Islam peacefully forbid slavery as it did with alchohol. You will see a verse in the Qur'an saying something like "don't drink wine before praying", but that doesn't mean that alcohol is allowed. Same thing with this verse, back then slave women and men were treated like dirt, but when Islam came along it slowy got rid of slavery altogether. Islam adopted with the international prohibition of slavery.

No one has sex with slave women/men anymore lol.

Because his teachings were going against how the authorities wanted people to live.

On the other hand, they might have been afraid of a possible heresy groing strong among the peasants which could have a lot of bad results.

Additionally, Jesus was admittedly able to influence a lot of people; the authorities saw that he started to have a following.

None of those choices represent the truth.

Fact... Jesus was a real person.

Fact.. mythology made him into a bigger figure than he really was.

Fact.. nobody knows if there is a god or not.. no matter what they tell you.

For the same reason hundreds of thousands of people were killed by the Romans... they weren't Roman. Thousands of people were crucified by the Romans for hundreds of years... what makes Jesus' case so special (aside from the obvious claim to resurrection that cannot be substantiated)?

It's a scientifically proven fact that Jesus did exist. The question you should have asked was whether he was the Son of Man or not. Because anyone who doesn't believe Jesus was real is dumb.

Crowds shouting "Crucify him!" and friends betraying him doesn't sound very much like a strong following. Only after his resurrection did most of his supposed followers believe he was who he said he was.

[QUOTE="Anonymous_2"]lol wut? Where does it talk about marriage with slaves? :|

If it was talking about marrying them then it wouldnt mention slaves at all cuz it's no different then. And what is "free from blame" supposed to mean? It is very clearly giving you the permission to have sex with your slave whether she likes it or not!

And why even keep a slave? Why not ask muslims to stop keeping any slaves? I mean the whole of muslim arabs gave up alcohol in a day when the revelation came of alcohol's prohibition...

Anonymous_2

Islam peacefully forbid slavery as it did with alchohol. You will see a verse in the Qur'an saying something like "don't drink wine before praying", but that doesn't mean that alcohol is allowed. Same thing with this verse, back then slave women and men were treated like dirt, but when Islam came along it slowy got rid of slavery altogether. Islam adopted with the international prohibition of slavery.

No one has sex with slave women/men anymore lol.

Ah quran says to not pray if you are drunk, not the other way around lol. Your prayer is not accepted if you are drunk, that's why it says to not bother.

People dont have sex with slaves cuz it's not legal anymore, it has nothing to do with religion.:|

If we completely follow quran then raping women of a captured country would become international law. How can you possibly follow such a book?

Lol I got that verse wrong sorry. :P

You were allowed to marry slave women, but since slavery is abolished in most parts of the world, this ruling is now unimportant. Just like the verse about not praying when drunk.

Let me stress on this, you could only marry them, and it obviously had to be mutual, because Islam forbids forced marriage in any form.

Before his crucifiction many people where listening to him preaching. He did have a folowing.

And seeing how the crowd is easily manipulated I am not that surprised by a turn of stance from them at the duration of his trial and finally his crucifiction. The authorities could easily label anyone as heretic or liar.

For the same reason hundreds of thousands of people were killed by the Romans... they weren't Roman. Thousands of people were crucified by the Romans for hundreds of years... what makes Jesus' case so special (aside from the obvious claim to resurrection that cannot be substantiated)?

The people who were crucified were killed for blasphemy, crimes against the state, etc. Crucifixion was the most horrid way to kill a person. Romans didn't talk about it. Women were crucified backwards so none would have to look upon her face. Crucifixion was left for the worst of crimes like claiming to be God, not telling people to love your neighbor.

If Jesus was just a good man, nothing more, then why was he murdered by the religious leaders and Roman officials?

What, only deities can be murdered by governments? Back in Roman times religion was a method of social control, having one universal religion made it easier for the Roamns to promote loyalty and keep peace. Jews were an exception because they had never threatened Roman authority before. Now Jesus comes along with this new sect of Jews and teaches things that could be considered revolutionary at the time, like give to Ceaser what is Ceaser's and give to god what is god's, or that god is the only real king and all men ruling as kings do so by god's authority. The Romans didn't want to have to make concessions for every new Jewish sect that came along, and they certainly didn't want religion being used to undermine their empire, that's why they crucified Jesus. It had nothing to do with if he was actually a deity or not.

As for the Jewish religious leaders, they probably had much the same reasons. Jesus didn't necessarily conflict with their teachings, but he was making trouble with the Romans. They rightfully feared that if Jesus' teachings became synonymous with Judiasm that all Jews would suffer for what Jesus was teaching.

Jesus was a political casualty, simple as that. That he was executed proves nothing. The Romans also executed Celts, Gauls, Druids, and just about any other person who refused to accept Roman gods and traditions. Does that make all those people deities as well?
